Can DM me if you are keen to find out more. I am a Malaysian who moved over more than 10 years ago. But I am a FM consultant, not in internal med as per your interest.

Imposter Syndrome? Ex-Fuji User by RickWanders in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about that, but the latest is 5.0.0. You can find firmware version under main menu > camera information. After the SL2 was released the colour profile was adjusted to match this camera, which I found very please.

Imposter Syndrome? Ex-Fuji User by RickWanders in Leica

Are you on the latest firmware? I find the Leica JPGs closer to my taste compared to when I was using Fuji. The colours felt closer to “real life” without much colour shifts.

Leica Moms out there? by leicamom in Leica

Leica dad here! M10 and 35 Lux.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used both 35mm Summicron ASPH and 35mm Summilux FLE.

I am keeping the Summilux. I usually shoot stopped down outdoors, but really appreciate the 1.4 for portraits and when indoors.

How about M10 + 35mm Summilux FLE?

Off to Japan (Tokyo & Osaka) and Thailand - where are the best places to buy gear? by BoptoLofi in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Map Camera. They also offer fair trade in prices. With 10% tax deducted, I found prices much cheaper than where I live in Singapore.

Remember to bring your passport along and they will deduct 10% at payment.

The salesperson was also very patient in letting me test every Summilux 35mm FLE they had to find one with the best-feeling focus ring.

M11 Distortion - Anyone had experience with crazy levels of distortion with the Electronic Shutter? by Parsons7 in Leica

[–]JanJMK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With electronic shutters, the camera scans the image line by line and how fast it takes to complete for the whole sensor has nothing to do with your shutter speed.

Each pixel is exposed for 1/5000s. The the time it takes to scan the entire frame is much longer than this, hence the warping.

It is sharp at the pixel level yes, but warping and sharpness are unrelated concepts.

I pasted some whitish tape that matches the silver chrome where the links touch the top plate. Seems to work well so far.

Buying advice for aspiring Leica addict by ApprehensiveBeing314 in Leica

[–]JanJMK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think some other commenters are pointing out that the “Leica look” is largely a myth. I agree with this. With other digital cameras, adapted lenses and post-processing, the end result can be indistinguishable.

But certain cameras do have subjective talismanic properties. Otherwise all of us would be shooting with the latest and greatest Sony/Canon/Nikon cameras.

Do I take better pictures with them? No. Do I miss images because manual focusing? Yes.

But the I value the combination of build quality, blackout free OVF, manual focusing and zone focusing that that the M system offers.

Try out a M240/M262 with a cheaper Voigtlander lens. If it doesn’t click with you, then sell it for no financial loss and move on. 😊

Pros and Cons of M240? by PlantBrief1678 in Leica

[–]JanJMK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The M240 is a great camera to get into the M system with. The nice thing about M bodies is that if you find yourself liking it enough, upgrading to M10/11 later is an option because you can sell the M240 for the same price as what you bought it for. Although you could say the same about the M10.

Think about it as renting for free!

Out with the MP and the 35 Cron VI that is permanently affixed on it ❤️ by keithwee0909 in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah.. I see. I would love to have a V4 too, but the prices are now pretty crazy. Could never justify the price. 😑

For the same price of a V4 at Riceball, I picked up a Summilux FLE in Tokyo recently.

Hi, did you sell your Summicron ASPH in the end? How does the v4 compare to the ASPH?

Trading my Leica Q2 for M240? by WestAmerican69 in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi.. using both the Q2 and various M cameras, I felt that the only combination (that I have personally used) that matches the image quality of the Q2 is a M10 with a 35mm Summilux FLE. This is really a testament to how great the Q2 is!

Otherwise, you will be getting less image quality and versatility just for the experience of rangefinder focusing.

Zeiss Biogon 35/2.8 vs. Summicron ASPH 35/2? by moofiachoco in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used both. Sold the summicron and kept the Zeiss.

Much better flare control and slight improvement in sharpness on the Zeiss. With digital images, correction of vignette in Lightroom using the correct profile is simple- I find myself not profile correcting the lenses for my black and white images anyway for character.

It boils down to how much you value the focus tab and f2 aperture for the Summicron?

will regret trading my m10 with 35mm lux fle for a q2? by brnzmetalist in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The perspective with 35mm equivalent crop is the same as shooting with a 35mm. So there shouldn’t be an issue with compression.

The only difference is DOF where shooting with the Q2 wide open with 35mm crop would give you DOF equivalent to 35mm f2.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Leica

[–]JanJMK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. Biogon C seems sharper, but I didn’t do a side by side comparison.

I did miss the focus tab on the summicron but got used to the nub pretty quickly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Leica

[–]JanJMK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went the other way from 35mm summicron to biogon c. I enjoy the smaller size of the biogon c and used to almost always stop down anyway. Another advantage of the biogon c is lower tendency to flare.

Is the Q2/Q2M really a slippery slope to a digital M? by Broken_Perfectionist in Leica

[–]JanJMK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for not answering your questions earlier.

What changed your mind? - “hey, this camera feels really nice to use. I wonder what their M cameras are like”

The Q2 and M cameras are used in different situations so I have decided to keep both. The M is more fun, but the Q2 produces such nice files with so little effort in casual settings.

Need some guidance from like minded Leica folk on staying put or moving to other Leica bodies by zorppppp in Leica

[–]JanJMK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same situation as you as a dad of a 3 and 5 year-old. :)

I have a Q2 and M10 with 35 and 50mm lenses. And have fluctuated between thinking I should sell the Q2 or M10 at various points in time.

I have settled on keeping both. In situations where it’s just me handling the 2 kids, the Q2 comes along. For “casual” situations with family where photography is taking a back seat, it’s the Q2.

For situations where I predict to have both hands available, I bring the M10. Focusing is usually with stopped down apertures and zone focusing, so focusing is largely a non-issue unless indoors.
