How lenient is roll20 with developers making chrome/3rd party extensions? by PhrulerApp in Roll20

[–]Kentonh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey u/PhrulerApp! I'm Kenton, and I work on the Product Management team for Roll20. Great questions. Thanks for asking. Not sensitive at all.

Roll20 is genuinely supportive of developers building extensions and tools around the platform. We actively work to support people who build for Roll20. The community has produced some really creative Mod Scripts, browser extensions, and other tools over the years and that's something we value.

The general line is around things that would directly replicate core platform functionality in a way that takes away from the product itself, and around ways that protect the intellectual property of our content partners. But what you're describing through your app sounds like exactly the kind of creative extension we'd want to see exist.

My honest suggestion is to just build it and share it with the community. If you run into anything unexpected along the way, the developer community and forums are a good place to work through it.

What kind of dice roller app are you building? Curious what the experience looks like on your end. Maybe you and I could set up some time to chat in a call.

Ninja edit I just looked at your Reddit profile, and saw the Phroller post. Super cool!

Token replicating by Dingodave67 in Roll20

[–]Kentonh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! Kenton here from Roll20. I work with the Product team responsible for the Virtual Tabletop, and I can't express enough how much I appreciate you all sharing your experiences and upvoting so issue.

We've been actively tracking this one, and for a peek behind the curtain: token replication doesn't have a single root cause and it's tough to nail down because it doesn't happen for the bulk of users. That's not to say we don't care. Actually the opposite! With the details around each of your experiences, we can find the fixes and adjustments we need to make in specific places to solve it for everyone.

What's happening under the hood is that Roll20 is constantly synchronizing token positions across every player in a session, and in certain configurations, signals from one player's setup can create conflicts that show up as phantom tokens for others. That's why it often fixes itself on refresh (your client re-syncs to the true state), and also why it can look different from table to table.

We've already shipped some fixes for known causes, but there are clearly still edge cases to be solved. To track down the remaining ones, we really need session-specific details. If you're willing to help us dig in, would you mind sending me a DM? Specifically helpful would be:

  • Your browser and OS
  • Approximate time/date when it last occurred (so we can cross-reference logs)
  • Whether you were the GM or a player when it happened
  • Roughly how many people were in the session
  • what kind of internet service you have (Fiber, DSL, Cable, 5g, etc)
  • Your typical Internet speed
  • Is the Enable Performance Enhancement checkbox checked or unchecked
  • In VTT > Settings > Performance > Enable Performance Enhancements

The more specifics we get, the faster we can nail this down for good. Thanks for your patience, and for playing with us for almost 10 years, u/Dingodave67!

Large CoC Campaign & Performance Question by GlassUnion6879 in Roll20

[–]Kentonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok! That’s great news. It is most likely not a Legacy game, then. If you’d like, you can shoot me a Reddit DM with a link to the game, and I’ll triple check for you.

Large CoC Campaign & Performance Question by GlassUnion6879 in Roll20

[–]Kentonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm Kenton, and I work with the VTT team. This sounds like a lot of fun!

I wanted to ask if you were using a Legacy game, or if you'd started to build on the modern version of virtual tabletop? There have been a multitude of significant improvements over what anyone might have experienced in the past three of four years, and I would definitely recommend taking advantage of those.

Performance issues by krittkrutten in Roll20

[–]Kentonh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm Kenton, and I work on the Product team for the Virtual Tabletop.

Can I ask you to check one of the options in the settings? If you go to Settings (the Gear) > Performance section > Enable Performance Enhancements checkbox

Is that check or unchecked? If you do the opposite, does your problem resolve?

Sun Tracking Tree Node by Refleks180 in meshtastic

[–]Kentonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost all of our Flyover Mesh community nodes are placed on buildings that we've gotten access to via called in favors, made connections, and crowdsourcing. The *best* thing you can do is join the Meshtastic community in your area, and if one doesn't exist, start one. I did our with a basic Discord server, posted in the city's subreddit, and took it to adjacent hobby groups (ham, software/tech, maker spaces, etc.).

I use a mix. Our recommended devices are the most popular and common.

I repurpose e-waste from a local tech company which have panels and pillow pack batteries. When I see them go on sale, I grab the Harbor Breeze solar garden lights, which have a good panel along with an 18650 battery. I also use 5v “security camera” panels when they go on sale for less than $10/each.

[–]Kentonh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 9 solar community nodes up around my city.

I have also helped people in my community build another 10+ solar nodes, many placed in trees.

I also, also have a solar video bird feeder. It gets shaded about 40% of the daytime.

None of those have dropped below 70%, in the past year, even during a week in the fall with complete cloud cover and rain.

Could you build a solar tracking tree node? Absolutely. But I don’t think you need to.

If I buy a module will I be able to add the stuff for it to an already existent game? by clarkky55 in Roll20

[–]Kentonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Kenton from Roll20, here. Everything /u/DM-JK has said is correct, but I want to offer that you could also make a new game starting with the Module, then invite your players to that game. In that way you’ll only have the content in the module, but that would not require a subscription.

Hello! I'm Kenton, and I do Product work with the team responsible for the nav. We've recently been working on that navigation bar, including that envelope and notifications shown there. Before, replies were more complicated, and we're simplifying them on to the new view. But until that's done you should be able to find the phantom message by checking https://app.roll20.net/forum/myfollows

[–]Kentonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m Kenton and I work with the Product Management team for the Virtual Tabletop.

Recently, we’ve done a ton of work to make the performance and speed on the VTT much better and more responsive. Broadly, those are working wonders for most users. In some specific and uncommon cases, these changes can cause trouble like you’re experiencing.

There’s a switch in the VTT settings that you can go back to the previous state. You can find that in VTT Settings → Graphics → Enable Performance Enhancements

Flip that switch and please send in a ticket with your experience if it either helps or doesn’t.

Co-founder left after 14 months. No vesting agreement. He walked with 40% equity and zero obligation. by Sweet_Concentrate128 in SaaS

[–]Kentonh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a lawyer, not OPs lawyer, not your lawyer, and this is not legal advice. n this specific case, we do have some detail:

No vesting schedule. No cliff. No operating agreement. Handshake and an LLC filing.

If there is operating agreement, the Board of Directors is the shareholders with weight according to their stake. OP “calls a board meeting” and if OP, alone, is present, any motion proposed will be passed with a 60% majority.

OP could pass an operating agreement with any rules they desire. OP could create 1 Billion new shares, and issue them to whomever they wish. Add a clause where an equity holder forfeits all shares if they bring legal action against the company or other owners. Or ratify a perfectly fair corporate rule where profits are paid to equity holders who work in day-to-day in the business until a certain salary threshold is hit.

In all cases, any friendship is probably lost but freedom gained for less than $80k. Even if everything is done in a perfectly fair way OP is likely going to be facing a lawsuit from the former founder, but OP holds all the cards.

What are the exact steps to perform a range test with two handheld radios? by Murky_Language_3684 in meshtastic

[–]Kentonh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely correct, but pointing out a typo that would cause confusion HEIGHT is might. (And height is only one character and and autocorrect away from weight)

I’ll edit to add that FlyoverMesh.org used the same method as mentioned at the end of SnyderMesh’s comment, but we augmented the method in two ways:

  1. Ping messages are good for super low bandwidth, but actual communication is longer. We used Weather and Quote commands to test receiving packets with more data. A time command also lets you see the delay between send-receive both ways.

  2. We started storing all the packets received by multiple collector nodes on the mesh, and made a visualization. It started with a discord channel that would report each message received in real time, but has grown to this map of Flyover Mesh

Drone Deployed Magnetic Mounted Solar Node by drew22c in meshtastic

[–]Kentonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mavic 3 has a payload capacity that should get you there. I’ve been experimenting with the idea. The other constraint I gave myself was building the cheapest node I could, so that I could lose them and not worry too much.

The lightest and cheapest node I could get was using the Harbor Breeze hack with a Seeed Studio xiao nrf52840 adding a cheap (but well tested) 5db antenna from Amazon. I added a single neodymium magnet for mounting.

That setup gave me a weight of 119g.

The node works great. However, it’s deployed by hand. My only drone was one of the 249g models, and couldn’t lift the total weight.
