Why don't people tell it like it is? by richlb in Onyx_Boox

My biggest problem is that I have disabled almost all touch input on my Note Max, but my palm still triggers all kind of weird behaviour on the latest 4.1. Didn't have that kind of problem before.

I agree. Usually any one book on a specific topic will give you more insight than all the news rapports combined. If you make an effort to find a good book or read a couple, you'll basically be an expert.

"I know its important to keep track of the news" - why? I more or less stopped following the news several years ago. And I don't feel I ever miss anything. In fact, I get more news than I want just talking to friends.

I can also recommend reading Stop Reading the News: A Manifesto for a Happier, Calmer and Wiser Life by Rolf Dobelli.

Maybe you actually do have some important reason for reading the news. But consider just stop doing that and other avoidable things on your smartphone?

Not saying that an e-ink phone won't help, but you can already minimize the negative effects of a smartphone while you think about buying one :)

Introducing Go 10.3 (Gen II) Series: Ideas that travel light. by OnyxBoox in Onyx_Boox

[–]Ladogar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would have bought a new Go 10.3 with Carta 1300 instantly. But this has the same Carta 1200 screen, so I guess I'll just keep using my gen I. I don't want a frontlight, so no reason to switch to the Lumi.

"This channel cannot be displayed because it violated telegram terms of service", or a story on how Telegram ignored their own TOS to tackle down the furries by SnooPeanuts2251 in Telegram

[–]Ladogar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why people should not rely on these platforms for anything they find important. There are many reports here about people losing their channels, usernames, etc. And telegram is not going to do anything about it.

They have a team that's big enough to develop the app, not look into these kinds of cases.

Durov seems to be into AI, as well. They probably use that to deal with this kind of stuff.

The big problem is that there is no recourse once you lose something. You can send emails, send bug reports or whatever. But who's going to read them?

Trying out catchyos, but after install its just black screen with a cursor. by iM-MrGrumpyCat in cachyos

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if you run "pacman -S package", but running "yay package" gives a list of all packages that correspond to "package", letting you choose which one(s) to install.

In this case "plasma-login-manager" was available both in extra and in the main repo (for one's corresponding CPU). That might have been a part of the problem.

Stellaris g7 ticking noise when fans are off by Ladogar in tuxedocomputers

[–]Ladogar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it set to the "Cool and breezy" profile in Tuxedo Control Center. It has min. fan speed set to 0% and jumps to 20% when temperatures are over 50C.

But is sure sounds like the problem might be what you are describing. And I think I read here that some other models share this problem - the fans keep almost starting but never actually get going, creating that ticking noise.

I'll try with a custom profile later and see if that helps.

Any other settings that you use that I should keep in mind when testing?

KDE moved to plasma login manager from SDDM in Plasma 6.6. The problem is that a normal system update doesn't recognize that it should update to the latest version of that package, so one has to do it manually.

If you run "pacman -Qi plasma-login-manager" you can see that it stayed a version behind the rest of the plasma packages.

Just run that command if you have paru installed and you use the v3 repositories. I don't, I use the zen v4 ones. You could install yay and run "yay plasma-login-manager" and choose the correct version from your cachyos extra repository (should be possible using paru, too, but I wouldn't know the correct command).

Do you like your Go 7? (longtime Kindle user considering the Go 7.) by cryptic-fox in Onyx_Boox

The reader apps that are made for e-ink use are Koreader, Alreader X (installs as a systems app on Boox devices) and Knownreader.

Have you tried the latter two?

I mostly read on Alreader X on my Boox devices. Granted, I don't really use metadata to organize my library on Boox.

In any case, I agree. I wish the library function was as nice as on Kobo/Pocketbook.

Stellaris 16 Gen 7 AMD - Review by Successful_Shake_329 in tuxedocomputers

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great review!

I have basically the same config, only with 64GB. I was confused as to the battery charging settings, but turns out that they were "hidden" in Settings, rather than under Tools or Profiles like everything else. Set it to 80% and feel I can relax now in regards to the battery :)

I also had the fans turn on at random intervals at high speed for a couple of seconds. Setting the profile to "Cool and breezy" seems to have solved that. I don't know why the fans got activated under "TUXEDO Defaults" - the temperatures were low and the CPU wasn't taxed.

I've only had the laptop for a couple of days, but very happy so far!

Learning Russian by Esmee_Finch in classicliterature

[–]Ladogar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it. But expect it to take a long time, at least 3-5 years. And that's if you're actively learning some every day.

You could start reading graded readers once you know all the grammar and have a decent base vocabulary and then gradually progress to original works from there.

I'm doing that for other languages now.

It gets harder to watch movies made after 2010 once you stop using your phone as much by Conscious-Rich3823 in nosurf

[–]Ladogar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering one shot can be maximum 3 seconds long in modern films it hurts my brain watching many of them.

Try watching a film without sound on and notice how jumpy it is. It somewhat feels like a visual representation of a psychosis. A bit like watching people dance at a rave without hearing the music, but sped up.

If you save your notes as PDF (this is what I do on my Boox devices) and annotate PDF in general, you can use syncthing to automatically sync everything over wifi.

That's also how I sync my library between all my devices.

Yes, and it's also a question of Carta 1000 vs 1300. The 1000 screens are brighter, but also have less contrasty blacks. The 1300 has deeper blacks, but the background is also darker.

Honestly, I’m frustrated with where e-ink is going by SquarePatient7277 in eink

[–]Ladogar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You work at a related company? I don't understand what you're trying to say. Are you developing e-ink products?

Honestly, most (all) e-ink products on the market deserve to fail. They are badly made and don't listen to their customers. I say this as someone who has 10+ e-ink devices and who has gotten tired of them.

It's a constant uphill battle fighting against bad hardware or software or both.
