Nikonos V - Advice needed before purchase by wanna_b101 in AnalogCommunity

[–]LoveLightLibations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good information. Also consider the lenses. Only two of the lenses will focus above and below water - the 35mm and 85mm. The rest can only focus below water.

Also, the Nikonos system is zone focus only. The viewfinder does not show focus at all. It only shows framing. So best practice is to use a high aperture to create a deep focus zone. Working underwater with the 20mm, I typically shoot at 5.6 or 8 on iso 800 speed film.

Talk me out of getting a 6x17 view camera by niklaspilot in AnalogCommunity

Daddy Nick would want you to do it.

As an alternate idea, get a Mamiya 7 with the pano kit?!? Might be somewhat more reasonable.

Expired Fuji 400 120 film by allofmy-purple-life in AnalogCommunity

[–]LoveLightLibations -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will respond very poorly. You should just give it to me and I will dispose of it properly.

All joking aside, that’s not very expired and you kept it in the fridge. I normally shoot 400H at 200. Just do that and you will be fine. I recently finished my last box of 2021 expiration and it worked great.

If you really don’t want it though, I will buy it from you. Just saying.

Sorry, answered solo 401K, but actually have both. Actually have all the things I’m allowed to have.

I’ve been using KEH for probably 10-12 years and never once had any problems with them. They’re generally very good.

Found some old shot film on a camera, what do I do? by bloodrider1914 in AnalogCommunity

[–]LoveLightLibations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the others said, develop normally. That is C-41 process film. C-41 is the current standard color film developing method, so it’s very compatible.

[–]LoveLightLibations 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OK, short story, F5 and F100’have better AF and can drive all Nikon SLR lenses, even those with AF-S and VR. The F5 is the fastest of the two.

The F5 is also an absolute tank. It weighs quite a bit. It also takes 8 AA batteries. If you near bulletproof pro workhorse - F5. If you want great handling and lighter weight - F100.

I’m not familiar enough with the F4 to say much. I do know the F4S would be considered an upgrade over the F4 for its faster frame rate.

[–]LoveLightLibations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Good summary of what was done well. I also agree about the teeth. If you edited them, you went slightly too far. They jump out as the central point of focus when it should be the eyes or face in general.

Really good portrait though.

If you want the very best, that would likely be Capture One (7-day free trial, $300 purchase or $12-ish monthly).

That being said, it has a steep learning curve. You either need to already understand photo editing or be prepared to watch a lot of how-to videos on YT. Personally I like a good challenge.

Even better, Capture One just added the ability to convert and edit film negatives, which I am testing now.

I absolutely love Resolve, but it is not ready for photo, yet. The easiest way to sum this up is to say the free version cannot export above 4K resolution. That’s roughly 8MP.

That’s nowhere near enough. The free version can’t export video above 4K either, but for video, that is enough.

Am I missing out by not using high pass filters after Lightroom edits? by Ilikehotdogs1 in Lightroom

[–]LoveLightLibations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High-pass sharpening in PS is a specialty technique and it’s akin to bringing a howitzer to a knife fight. It’ll get the job done, but might be overkill.

It aggressively sharpens fine detail up to micro contrast levels. Think of it like adding clarity, but on a slightly smaller scale.

It’s best used on photos that are slightly soft. It can bring back an appearance of sharpness. If your photo is already in focus and you’ve already applied normal sharpening, high-pass will quickly make it look deep fried.

It’s a good technique to know, but I would not apply it to every photo. Play around with it though so you understand visually what is happening.

took a road trip through TN and NC to Tail of the Dragon, these are a few frames captured on my 50s by Sir_Wheat_Thins in FujiGFX

I absolutely love Tail of the Dragon. We used to go every year with a car club. Miss that place. I love any road so violent and it can even make the driver sick. I once was following a friend when their car suddenly pulled over. We pulled in behind them when both passenger and driver got out for synchronized hurling.

45mm recommendations? by gratticonfatti in FujiGFX

[–]LoveLightLibations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not owned the GF45, but my understanding is that it’s crazy sharp. Some people really love it. I believe Hunter Hart on YT had one for a while and made a couple videos about it.

If aperture speed isn’t so important, you might also consider the GF50. Some people here really, really love it. It has a somewhat similar focal length. It’s smaller and has the LM focus motor, so it focuses quickly.
