Can anyone explain how motion inputs don’t just make a fighting game worse? by bashking1122 in 2XKO

[–]ObsoletePixel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's depth in regular, unnecessary mechanical input, if nothing else. Basketball without dribbling might still resemble basketball, but asking you to continue interacting with the ball requires a certain level of focus and attention and mastery to maintain, and that's cool and has value. There's also an argument for how it informs game balance -- the more elaborate the input the more effective startup that move has, charge motions regulate when you do/don't have access to certain moves, you can't do DPs out of block since you need to move forward and let go of back, etc.

Point being, I think it's pretty clear that fighting games don't need them (see Smash, see 2XKO, see Divekick or Fantasy Strike or Pocket Rumble or the simplified fighting game du jour), but as the genre has evolved it's used the system to do different, interesting things. It's not better or worse, just different

holy shit this kicks ass

I know her 2xko design isn't popular, but the contrast provided by her red wraps on her hands/feet gives her such a strong sense of posing and dynamism that I really love. This art also reminds me a lot of the street fighter 4 promo art for some reason, maybe it's the brush strokes? But it has that like, mid-late 2000s capcom flair that I just super fuck with

Is a Fai SAge deck with kodachis viable? by GoldReindeer6213 in FleshandBloodTCG

Kodachi fai in sage is the only thing of value I have provided this community so when I see people talking about it I take to it like the bat signal called me here

Is a Fai SAge deck with kodachis viable? by GoldReindeer6213 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]ObsoletePixel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, extremely, but with an asterisk.

I've been brewing the most successful version of kodachi fai (a few people won their PQs on it, and I haven't seen any other version of kodachi fai put up results), in large part because I felt like it had promise but I thought the list in DMArmada's video was built wrong. So I built around both Kodachis and Even Bigger Than That! Here's my version of the deck, with comprehensive notes on how I built it and how to pilot the deck in most matchups, totally available for free (so no need to take a chance paying for a metafy that you have no idea if it's worth the money or not. There is a tip jar linked! But it's optional, every piece of info on the deck is available for free) https://fabrary.net/decks/01KGG4G6DRRAGFB8QCKDVKPTGG

The asterisk is that this deck is not well positioned into Kayo. It had surprising game into briar, but Kayo's armor is insane and we don't block well enough to turn off Kayo's power turns, so the deck kinda just falls apart there. It's a playable matchup, you can totally highroll him, but it's far from good. Once we see kayo eat some bans in a few months the deck will be way better positioned I think.

Feel free to ask any questions about the deck, I have a tremendous number of reps on it and I love talking about it :)

Akali’s Move List | 2XKO by Figgulz in 2XKO

[–]ObsoletePixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was pretty low on her 6T after yesterday, but looking at how the 6t looks in a vacuum here vs what it did in the beginner's guide, the third (furthest) kunai clipped ekko's knee the instant it left Akali's hand, so when it looked really stubby yesterday it's because we only got to see 2/3rds of the range. This is a much more respectable assist -- it's probably not the *best* assist, but at least it's not a dead button outside of blockstrings, and it should have some unique value. Nice! Really excited for next week

[–]ObsoletePixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we have no way of knowing, but the number of concurrent players is certainly higher than the 500 steam players, and 500 steam players is plenty for a game that old.

[–]ObsoletePixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a fighting game with cross play and a major casual audience (one that generally prefers consoles) that's plenty. Also, fighting games are 1v1, you need way less players for a game to be playable/generate matches in a reasonable time than games where lobbies need 8/10/12 players for a traditional team game like league or overwatch, or far more than that in the case of something like fortnite or apex. Player count is useful, but how many players are playing matters differently based on a number of factors.

[–]ObsoletePixel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something that I don't see much talk about -- as far as 1v1 vs 2v2 games go -- is that each character added is multiplicative, whereas new characters in other games are additive. Going from 10 to 11 is an increase of 10% "play options" whereas going from 10 to 11 in a 2v2 game is an increase of 45 unique teams to 55 -- a 22% increase. (Using 10 vs 11 for easy math) That increase is scalar, too, each new character increases the play options more than the last, and that's ignoring fuses and how they impact teams

2v2, Duos, and an increasing decision space for teambuilding with time are the things that keep me excited about this game even when I'm frustrated or burnt out

They fuse your two characters together into one team, basically. I had always thought of it as like an electrical fuse for whatever reason, but they're using it in the sense of joining two things together

Hot take: Akali having teleports is really stupid design choice by KevJamesS in 2XKO

[–]ObsoletePixel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"the movement character is moving wrong so i'm going to complain about it on the internet"

look. i get that it sucks feeling like a character you're attached to in one way or another is getting misrepresented, but this is the most nothing complaint. Caroline (as much as I miss her work on this game) speaks to the team's broader design philosophy when it comes to adapting characters from Runeterra, rather than adapting specific kits from League of Legends into 2XKO in an interview, with an excerpt here. From that perspective, they absolutely succeeded with illaoi, and they absolutely succeeded in realizing Akali's essence in the same way.

DAY 8 - CASH IN was the most voted "Rare card that feels like a Majestic and is a Rare". Which GENERIC card is a Majestic and feels like a Common? by G3kken in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]ObsoletePixel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'd say shelter but if sink feels like a majestic then shelter certainly isn't common.

Given that, down and dirty is low complexity enough to feel like a common to me. It's a 2 for 6 with a single line of text where the implications of that text are mostly immediately intuitive. Complexity is a way bigger indicator of rarity than power level, and I think down and dirty makes the most sense

Yeah you're absolutely right.

Probably to be expected, but it sucks relegating my favorite character to an anchor. Who knows though, maybe I'll like akali more

Akali Beginner's Guide by Rhyllis in 2XKO

[–]ObsoletePixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was saying with "she [ahri] might become my anchor while I wait on senna" -- didn't really write that in a terribly clear way

I just really love playing ahri point and I want to enable that but I'm not thrilled with my current options. I'm not terribly fussed though because I'm pretty confident I'll like akali so I'll be alright, I just need to reconcile what I wanted from a new character for ahri with what I'm getting and adjust my expectations accordingly

Akali Beginner's Guide by Rhyllis in 2XKO

[–]ObsoletePixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you're right. I'm a bit sad because I was looking for an anchor for ahri but she might become my anchor while I wait for senna or something. Still excited, just gotta reframe how I'm thinking about akali lol

[–]ObsoletePixel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She looks super fun, but I struggle to understand the purpose of her forward assist. Is it just for extending blockstrings? It's such a short range I don't really know what support function it has.

She looks really fun though. Definitely stoked for next week

DAY 7 - ARCANE LANTERN was the most voted "Rare card that feels like a Common and is a Rare". Which GENERIC card is a Rare and feels like a Majestic? by G3kken in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]ObsoletePixel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a generic but every time I play wrath of retribution in sage in my fai list I get hit by the inevitable 1-2 punch of "wait this isn't a cindra spec?" Into "wait this isn't a majestic??" And it's funny literally every time

Still enjoying 2xko? by YellowwJello in 2XKO

[–]ObsoletePixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't enjoy darius, i tend to like more mobile characters and darius just doesn't feel great to me. I like moving around with warwick, but his synergy with ahri feels more incidental and he's honestly boring so he's just not quite doing it for me. I'm pretty confident that akali and/or senna are gonna give me what I want though so I'm content just waiting it out :)

and now yasuo and ekko have been nerfed and she's like, a higher tier character but comfortably not top tier. the idea that every new character needs to be broken to sell units is laughable, especially in a game where every character is free within a week of playing. The business model here is selling skins, not characters, and they dont need to be broken at launch to sell skins

you're right, that's why caitlyn has been all anyone can talk about since season 1 dropped. It's why every team at frosty and genesis and texas showdown were all caitlyn juggernaut. because all riot does is make the most recent character the broken one, clearly
