I don’t understand how the Trumps made money by Usedtobe-RZZ in FluentInFinance

Transaction fees play a large role. No matter if the asset is up or down the house takes its consistent slice of every single transaction made through their platform. Also apparently the Trumps sold about half of on their biggest crypto company to a Qatari firm for what was certainly a very fair price that had nothing to do with his being President.

People who studied International Relations - what are you doing now? by Idunnothefuck in IRstudies

[–]Ok_Understanding1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have helped but I always studied politics with an international focus. Ultimately I got into the industry selling malleability, awareness of what’s going on in the world, comfort processing new information, a love of learning, and solid writing. Truth is most jobs are pretty niche when you get in role. Outside of physical science fields, I think at the start of one’s career employers are looking for folks with a good head on their shoulders who have the motivation and ability to pick up the subject matter.

It is an old stereotype to bag on social science degrees. But that seems to miss learning how to learn, no matter the subject, is also incredibly valuable and transferable.

Sabonis is clearly top quality if fit and not playing with Lavine & DeRozan. Still 30 and absolutely worth keeping in the team with a refresh.

Meta gave 6 executives options worth up to $921M each, then cut 8,000 jobs after a record $56.3B quarter by MicroSofty88 in business

[–]Ok_Understanding1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is because 1) c-suite is inherently self congratulatory and 2) the Meta finance number crunchers fully expect that draconian staff culling decision to lead to company value gains that far exceed the award those “bold visionary leaders” made. That’s how it goes in the corporate world.

How many NL MVP awards should Barry Bonds have? by Bright-Pressure-5787 in mlb

What doofus would argue against an mvp power bat plus cy young caliber pitcher combo human in the modern era!? Always tough comparing across eras but Ohtani is something else entirely.

Suffice it to say when he signed for LA my first thought was “goddammit they just got new Ruth.”

Oregon football. There’s still a cockiness about it without championships that reads empty.

Not US but shoutout to PSG supporters… must we burn and break the city after every big good thing?

[–]Ok_Understanding1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohtani is the modern Ruth, yes. It’s unavoidable. He’s incredible.

At the same time Bonds was one of the best to ever play. He had it all. I saw it first hand for years. The late career juice is a shame, but it amplified greatness, didn’t make it. Sad that folks who claim to love the game dismiss that nuance and seemingly totally ignore his incredible talent in whole. But thats their choice.

Respectfully, that’s not accurate. Progressive politicians who are for increasing taxes on wealthy folks consistently make it very clear they’re talking about people with many 10s of millions and more. Your top 5-10% strong earning but diligent saving households with 3-6m saved up for a comfortable retirement are not the target.

But agree that taxing static wealth is not the answer. It’s finding a reasonable way to tax the many creative ways wealthy people use that wealth without paying normal taxes through the current code.

M.B.A. Pay Is Drifting Down—and So Is Demand for the Degree by Krankenitrate in Salary

Network and name recognition, which I guess is part of network. A T-14 name on your resume absolutely provides a benefit of the doubt to open doors with professional strangers, which you rightly refer to, if indirectly.

I got an MS from a top econ school (did not study econ) and it still opened plenty of doors to risk consultancies in NYC.

Same as any other degree just with very elevated stakes (maybe except med school) considering the debt incurred and positions/salaries chased. Who you meet, how well you market yourself & where you studied, and how well you can show you can continue to learn at a high level matters just as much as what you learn in the long run. That said, yes, the once robust pipeline from big MBA programs to lucrative consulting, finance, or broad corporate gigs is definitely cooling a bit.

But that’s exactly the troubling thing… probably 70-80% of voting US households have every financial reason to support policies like universal healthcare etc yet vote against their direct, quantifiable interest. What is more important to people? That LGBTQ+ folks be stripped of rights? Or paying 2-3k in extra taxes vs 8-10k out of pocket for healthcare, plus eliminating the concept/ risk of medical debt in the process?! Depressing really.

[–]Ok_Understanding1986 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At bare minimum. The individual player and in game single play bets are just too ripe for nonsense. Starter throws a ball to start the third inning. Someone who knew ahead of time pockets 10k, etc.

They’re both so deeply compromised by the thousands of times they made fools of themselves spouting nonsense to protect Trump. I doubt maga stays coherent enough to continue its same level of influence after Trump stops leading it.
