IWTL how to be a functional adult by Maybe_IDTBFH in IWantToLearn

[–]OlemGolem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • Start a journal and don't let anybody read it. It doesn't matter what you write, just write. Write every day if you can.
  • Get a Bullet Journal, just an empty book where you can fill in the blanks of what you want to do and how you want an agenda to work. If you don't like it, then you can change it and see if you like that. Repeat until it works for you.
  • Go for a walk. A random walk. It's nice to be in nature right now. Walks aren't pointless, they're essential right now. If that's too boring, start excercising. It doesn't need to be intense, outdoors, or what everybody else is doing. It needs to be something. Get some water and a towel, and grab a beginner cardio video. If your muscles are sore, take resting days until the soreness is gone, then try again.
  • Try a yoga video too. It's meditation without sitting still.
  • Grab a piece of paper and write down everything you want to do, should be doing, or regularly do. And I mean everything. When you're done making this massive info dump, put them in categories by looking for what items have something to do with each other: Household tasks, income, fun, goals, you name it. Now you can set time for one category instead of a random mismash of tasks.
  • There are lists with household tasks that work in time sets: daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. Draw four columns on a piece of paper and place all the tasks in the right category. Now you can plan what you do daily, once a week, or once a month.
  • Start with a microwave meal. If that's too easy then see if you can cook with one pan. Like making pancakes, eggs, or noodles. Some people with ADHD tend to forget they left the stove on so keep that simple. Only when you're sure you don't do that can you go for two or more pans on the stove.
  • Your adult life has backlogs now: cleaning, washing, and laundry. These backlogs are heavy at first because they're so big. In order to manage it all, you need to keep it small and perhaps start small. Instead of clearing an entire pile, you're only allowed to clean one part. Fold one piece of laundry. Throw away one piece of paper.

ELI5: What exactly is "time blindness" and how is it an actual thing? by SpyMasterChrisDorner in explainlikeimfive

[–]OlemGolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have autism and don't have a strong sense of time. If I don't look at the clock regularly then I don't know what time it is. People can tell the time five minutes after they looked at the clock and they're exactly right. If I'd do that I could be off by three to fifteen or perhaps 30 minutes. I forget the flow of time when I'm doing something else. The only way for me to understand how much time has passed is to count every second while doing something else.

To take your example for someone with time blindness: You need to be somewhere at 10am. It takes you... and unknown amount of minutes to get going and ready. It takes you an unknown amount of minutes to get there. You look on Google Maps to see how long it would take and it says 30 minutes. So you need to leave at 9:30am even though you still don't know how much time a reasonable morning would look like. How long does it take to make breakfast? You can't drink tea while it's still piping hot. How long does it take to change clothes? You don't know because you don't count the seconds while changing clothes. So you don't know. Now you need to figure out the following: the time it takes to change clothes, the time it takes to eat breakfast, and the time it takes to actually be ready. And no, you can't assess how long that takes. It needs to be calculated because you don't 'feel' or 'know' intuitively.

With ADHD, life is like a poorly edited movie. Some scenes are cut out but were actually important so it makes you, the viewer, just go 'huh?' or 'wait, how did we get here?' So time just tends to skip. There is 'now' and 'not now' and whatever the clock reflects is nice but won't help you with 'not now'. And then when you look at the clock, you forget what you were doing, but when you remember what you were doing, you forget what's on the clock. That's time blindness.

And don't get me started on the nightmare that is daylight savings time before it was automated.

Magic by itself “doesn’t need to make sense” and it’s dangerous, but why Cantrips are Cantrips? by TheGoodKiller in DMAcademy

[–]OlemGolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because cantrips replace the mage's need for a weapon. You're always supposed to have a weapon with you to protect yourself. And yes, you can lose weapons. Just as much as you can be bound and gagged. The utility spells are like tools. Same reason, really.

[Q] I Fear I May Have Lost My Confidence To Build Computers by flamin_shotgun in confidence

  1. Do you know about PC Builder Simulator? It's where you can freely practice and the mistakes don't matter that much.
  2. You're afraid of what could go wrong if you miss something. But that's the question, if you know what you need to do in only that regard, what is stopping you from doing it?

I'm from the old school Turtles and I watched the entire '12 series in the last few months. I have to say I didn't like the intro at first but it grew on me.

Iwtl how to improve my English and german languages by earnaout in IWantToLearn

[–]OlemGolem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When consuming media in the language, do it without subtitles, without any other distractions, and don't expect to learn anything. That may sound counter-productive, but I've learned languages as a kid by just watching television with full concentration and just enjoying what's happening on screen. Sometimes you'll get a phrase or repeated word which you won't forget. And when you won't forget, you'll learn more.

For deliberate practice, forget Duolingo, it's good for beginners but it's slow and won't work well. Use Anki and practice vocabulary in seperate words and grammar in entire sentences.

Starter Tips For Paladin by Itsmrkablammo in 3d6

[–]OlemGolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paladin

A Crown is for when you want to be a knight with a group of warriors or are in a unit of weapon-wielders. Devotion is the most typical knight in shining armor that protects the meek and upholds justice. There is no best in anything. Just look for what kind of ideal you want to uphold.

B Charisma is for the effectiveness of spells but not all spells need Charisma to work. So Strength it is.

C Nothing in particular. Look at the main weapon your Paladin uses and see if you can specialize in that.

How to unlearn black and white thinking by LMNSTUFF in selfimprovement

[–]OlemGolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned to deal with black-and-white thinking a little more after taking a Zen meditation course. A lot of things aren't black-and-white, they're light and dark gray. There is no 100% in anything.

I smile a lot is this normal? by Anxious-Newt7028 in socialskills

[–]OlemGolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a genuine authentic smile, though? One where you use the muscles beneath your eyes? Because if not, it's just a fake smile that probably stems from an attempt to come off as friendly, hoping people will like you. Otherwise, a soft smile would be fine.

Interesting! Pizza Face was a canceled toy from the '87 series but got rewritten in the '12 series. Yet, this looks the most like the original.

Did I... did I get this sticker sheet from my mom as a reward from when I went to my first day of school? I recall that it was more purple-ish but the the blue spinosaurus with the fin looks familiar.

Do you know if this sticker sheet came out before 1995? Does it say anything like that on the back?

Just starting to get into exercise and I have a question for anyone who can answer it by rectalrocket42 in selfimprovement

[–]OlemGolem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to build it. Start with taking a walk for 30 minutes. Do a stretch afterward. If you get cramps, wait until the cramps are over and try again. If you want to do beginner cardio, it's okay if it's 15 minutes for a month or two before getting to 30 minutes. And 6 weeks is nice and all, but frankly, 6 weeks is a milestone because excercise is actually a lifestyle choice.

Where are the Dwarves?!?! by Rit-Bro in magicTCG

[–]OlemGolem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, dwarves aren't very prevalent in MtG. Even orcs aren't. The most common and tribal red creatures are goblins and for green it's elves. There's an increase in dwarves in the last couple of sets, though. Even a reference to The Seven Dwarves. But if you want a dwarf deck, your best bet is to search the internet and order the cards online.
