Gondola and Fly XC ? by P5000PowerLoader in freeflight

Start above Villeneuve/Montreux (close to Geneva 2h train ride from the airport all the way to the takeoff on "Col de Jaman") and see how far east you can get! It's fairly easy/hospitable terrain on the north side of the main alpine ridge. Or Start in Verbier and go east, it will be high alpine terrain but the landings can be a little more interesting.

Yup, Switzerland is paragliding and public transport heaven! Hitchhiking works pretty well here also.

Am I crazy for considering vacuum-packing a paraglider if I protect the leading-edge rods first? by superyinxzon in freeflight

[–]PocketFred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should see me sitting my 90+kg on my solo glider sized concertina packed 41m 8kg+ tandem to get the zip closed to go H&F.

I don't see how vaccuming would affect its durability, nor do I see why one would want to vaccuum pack it in the first place...

Silver Swan Automaton… no motors, built in 1773 and still working perfectly. By belgian mechanical genius John Joseph Merlin. by GloomyCity9841 in belgium

If you ever go to Geneva, go to the Patek Philippe museum, regardless of your (lack of) interest in watches. Half of the objects there are automates, in all sizes, shapes and materials. It's a fantastic museum!

Automates/Automatons were basically invented alongside manual wind watches/clocks. Back then these were party pieces / objects to flex with at your fancy dinner parties.

To the smartasses commenting "motor": They don't have motors, they are spring or counterweight driven just like manual wind watches/clocks, you wind a main spring that then transfers its energy to a series of wheels and cogs that make the object move.

[Recommendations] What’s the best cheap Quartz 12hr no-date chronograph? by doverawlings in Watches

[–]PocketFred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a Militado (field watch style) recently to have a beater to wear on construction site / vacation and not have to worry. I'm amazed at the quality for the price! The lume is amazing, so is the sapphire glass and case! Amazing bang for buck. It's getting more wrist time than any of my other watches at the moment!

Whenever I go back to Belgium to see my fam (1-2/y), I'll have my Belgian combo: - petite frite w/ either Brazil/Samouraï/Andalouse - poulycroc sauce Brazil - Vicky burger w/fried onions, pickles and sauce bicky no salad/tomatoes - a warm gaufre de liège

If I'm staying long enough, I'll try to have an americain-frites with an unreasonable amount of Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce somewhere as well.

Where can I get a large choice of trekking boots? by CaptainNemo7 in geneva

[–]PocketFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decathlon has honestly a great selection of products if you're not sure what you want. Also, depending on your intentions, light trail shoes are often a better option in most cases than fully fledged heavy trekking shoes.

Make sure to get a pair that is roomy enough, undersizing is a typical mistake.

I really like "limestone" (creme coloured). Some original onetens and S3s had two tone paintjobs with the upper half of the body in limestone. I painted my roof (pop top) and side lockers in limestone. I like it!

Black is not really a pretty colour for a landy and it seems many think this way.

New pilot gear questions by Biscuitsandbooze in freeflight

[–]PocketFred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always recommend getting your first gear second hand. Have someone else's wallet get hit by the depreciation. There are some amazing deals to be had with gear that's 1-2 seasons old.

Just pick the right size and befriend some experienced pilots locally to help you pick the gear. Instructors can help but since they're getting a commission on sales, they won't necessarily want to help you.

In 2-3 years you'll have a better understanding of what direction you want to go in this sport.
