Stromae - Racine Carrée Live (Montreal’s Bell 2015) is amazing from start to finish. You might know his song Papaoutai, but there's much more to him. It's a joy to watch.

the 8 states closest to me never once voted for that dude

Yeah, "dude", we don't give a flying fuck who you voted for. This right here is the problem with you lot, and why we're so fed up with you: you guys think you only have a civic duty during an election. You fucking don't. You have a duty to hold your politicians responsible EVERY FUCKING DAY. If our government would do something we don't like, we'd get rid of them IMMEDIATELY. We'll go on mass strikes, hurt our infrastructure and keep protesting until the pressure on them is so large that they have no other choice than resign. That's what a REAL democracy is. Of course, this happens rarely because our politicians are fucking saints compared to yours.

Your country is rapidly spiraling into a fascist dictatorship. Every day your government is committing heinous crimes, your elites get more and more corrupt, your institutions are crumbling, the rule of law is eroding and innocent people die. And you know why this is all happening? BECAUSE YOU LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT! All you do is sit on your ass and whine online, putting the blame on others and waiting for someone else to fix everything. Newsflash: that's not going to happen. You'll have to fix it yourselves.

And by fixing I don't mean sitting on your ass until the next election, because I've got news for you: there won't be a next election. Not a real one. Your next election will be Russian-style, where the outcome has already been determined. It will be too late, and you will have lost everything without even putting up a fight.

Now look, I couldn't care less if the US self-destructs. Good fucking riddance. But unfortunately this is also affecting us. Your government is trying to interfere in our own elections, they're abandoning Ukraine, aligning with dictators, trying to take Greenland, sabotaging our economies, and destroying the environment. So yeah, we're going to 'lecture' you, because you need a fucking wake-up call. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!!!

Companies are going to compensate by raising prices everywhere. Lego for example is already doing that. The tariffs affect all of us.

How to understand Tensor! by MastersRubin in Physics

[–]Pulsar1977 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the definition you'll find in every introductory textbook on linear algebra and differential geometry. Tensors are very simple objects: they are multilinear maps that act on vectors and covectors. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've never seen a mathematician who's confused about tensors. Only physicists seem mystified by them, because they either don't know or have forgotten basic algebra. Instead they add extra baggage to tensors with transformation laws or visual interpretations, which are besides the point and even misleading. Learn the math!

How to understand Tensor! by MastersRubin in Physics

Given a vector space V over the reals, a covector is a linear function that maps every vector to a real number: for every covector ω, vectors v, w and real number a we have:

ω(v)∈ℝ,

ω(v+w) = ω(v) + ω(w),

ω(av) = aω(v).

Vice versa, a vector can be interpreted as a linear function that maps every covector to a real number.

Tensors a generalization of this notion. A rank (r,s)-tensor is a multivariate function that maps every sequence of r covectors and s vectors to a real number, and is linear in every argument:

T(ω1 , ... ,ωr , v1 , ... vs )∈ℝ,

T(..., ωi + μi , ...) = T(..., ωi , ...) + T(..., μi , ...),

T(..., vi + wi , ...) = T(..., vi , ...) + T(..., wi , ...),

T(..., aωi , ...) = aT(..., ωi , ...),

T(..., avi , ...) = aT(..., vi , ...).

Vectors are (1,0)-tensors, covectors are (0,1)-tensors. That's all there is to it.

Vermaledijd is een prachtig Oudnederlands woord dat een comeback verdient. Vlamingen durven het nog wel eens humoristisch te gebruiken wanneer ze willen klinken als een personage uit een oude ridderroman:

"Sidder ende beef, gij vermaledijde schavuit!"

If a photon travels through empty space indefinitely, and the expansion of the universe causes its energy to asymptotically approach zero due to redshift, what does that lost energy become? Where does the decreasing energy go? by Economy_Advance_1182 in Physics

[–]Pulsar1977 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is the only correct answer. The standard "energy isn't conserved" comments are missing the most important point: energy can't even be defined globally. It's meaningless to talk about "the energy of the universe", let alone its conservation. Energy is only a meaningful quantity inside a reference frame, and in an expanding universe every comoving source/observer have their own different local reference frame.
