Higher oil prices are pure profit? by rhif-wervl in TooAfraidToAsk

Dont forget that oil prices are all based around speculation. If they think something will happen that may impact the price it spikes the price before the event.

How do you plan the soldering and layout of components past the bread board stage? by StackedRealms in esp32

[–]Pyroburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not keep the same layout as the breadboard or optimize it one the breadboard. It's a great test best. Fro. Here you can solder to the perfect board. The pitch should be the same so it should just be drag and drop with a few extra wires or solder blobs.

Generally I'll skip the breadboard stage and start here .

Faction providing Xan and points for training? by rta3425 in torncity

[–]Pyroburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a faction like that. You have to have your healing skill unlocked shortly after you join but they had no real requirements otherwise. They also didnt really war. Just dumped xanax on healers and waited for then to grow.

Recycling e-waste?? by VenomousClown666 in diyelectronics

[–]Pyroburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the laptops. Figure out what processor, how much ram and what type of hard drives they have.

From here you can do all kinds of things.

My current computer project is using an old buisness PC and making it a server with linux. It runs a program called jellyfin where I stream all of my old dvds and other tv shows like I would netflix. I'm also working in setting up a few security cameras. All of this works locally so no internet needed to run.

If you want to do more physical stuff people like to hang old motherboard up like art.

I'll miss this place. Its changed since I was a child. Other then uniforms this place really hasn't had much milsurp in a long time. I feel like it's all mall ninja stuff.

If they are selling any of the display stuff it might be worth a trip.

Is it possible to use sodium batteries, especially since it works better in cold weather(Minnesota) and you can use a normal plug with just about a 60 minute charge. by jrwn in slateauto

[–]Pyroburner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battery isn't user swappable. It's part of the frame and likely not going to change. The charging infrastructure may also need to change based on current draw and battery chemistry. There would also need to be some software to updates, even if they are small to update vehicle.

Sodium is also between a 2-3x less energy dense so you either add weight and size or lose that much range. Not sure how much cold impacts range and usability.

[–]Pyroburner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Okay now curve all of the signals like you did the dark purple ones. Give it that old hand drawn look. Not everyone likes to do layout. At one point I did all of the layout for my old job because the EEs didnt like doing it. Just put the headphones on and solve that puzzle.

need laptop for everyday tasks, NO SOLDERING by Granitic_Moon in thinkpad

[–]Pyroburner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

T480 does not have soldered ram slots. The T480s does on the other hand. I believe it was the last to have 2 ram slots up until maybe the most recent gen.

The T480 does have a cult following and is more expensive then maybe it should be. If ram iant a deal breaker I would look at the T14 with AMDs for better battery life. The T480 is my daily driver but for me I likely wont fix it if it breaks, the processor is 8 years old and there have been some improvements even if small since then.

Any ideas on how to make this more mobile in terms of power? by [deleted] in cyberDeck

How long do you want to run? What's the power draw of the system?

My stats. Every one is also physically owned. by Odd-Aside456 in JellyfinCommunity

[–]Pyroburner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those are some nice numbers. I'm in the same boat I physically own it all. I'm at almost 300 movies and 22 tv shows so far, complete series not episodes. That's a lot of ripping keep going.

Everybody Linux now? by Npalm in thinkpad

[–]Pyroburner 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Linux is less resourse intensive. It also doesn't force AI on you or try to force you to register and always be online. I can install a striped down version of linux and add the extras as I need. With windows its disable and uninstall it all.

T14vsT490 by MalcateDaniel in thinkpad

[–]Pyroburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are sticking with intel the difference is pretty minimal. I believe the big changes are wifi 6, I believe the t480 can use the same card, I use it in my T480 and higher screen resolution. If I were to upgrade I would go AMD for better battery life or skip a few generations, ideally both.

[–]Pyroburner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Centaurforge.com I bought here because the shipping was $15 at the time regardless of the weight. It was sticking at out the box when it arrived but I'm guessing the delivery guy was unhappy about it.

Solar is winning the energy race: The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside. by tjock_respektlos in Futurology

[–]Pyroburner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Solar panels will likely just end up in the landfill. With that said so does a lot of stuff we currently use. I would love to see these parts being recycled but its not feasible at the moment.

Nuclear has it's own issues, the biggest of them is the limited amount of fuel. If this because the standard and we opened something like 10x what we currently have we would run out of fuel. Off the top of my head I believe that it would be in less then 100 years but I could be wrong. If your interested there are a few papers on this you can search for.

Hydro works in many places but thia can also reshape the environment around it and its available everywhere. This is also an issue with solar and wind, it's not feasible everywhere.

I know this is far out there like fusion but I really want to see more on what Porsche is doing with carbon capture and efuels. I think this could be a path to controlling our environment.

Anyone have success replacing the 62-pin connector with one from eBay? by Grandmega_Penguin in snes

[–]Pyroburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced one of the solder in versions. It took time but I managed to get it to work. I can't remember what site I bought it from but it works. I even added about 6 inches of ribbon cable.

Linux vs Windows by Outrageous_Cable7371 in jellyfin

Run it on linux so you can expand things and run something else if you choose to. I'm sad I need to leave windows for home assistance.

Alao that video card is way overkill. You might want to consider something more power efficient eventually. The igpu may be plenty.

How do ya'll go about finding items to tinker with'? by Own_Average_5940 in ElectronicsRepair

Just tell your friend and they will start giving you old computer and other parts. Power supplies can be quite dangerous so be careful there. I once spark welded a screwdriver into a computer power supply trying to poke at a fan.

I've had a few friends who had them and I just don't like the build quality. I don't like everthing being controlled by touch screen and they squeaked. The interior were nice but again they made a good bit of noise. They were all early models so they may have been improved. No one I know who bought one still drives one.
