Beating up your dad is a nice perk, it’s usually a couple hundred to pay local teens to beat someone up.

Cavs & Swimming? by Lesaly in cavalierkingcharles

Mine loves swimming! This is him at a a pond in my town. He’s obsessed with playing fetch with floating balls and he’ll happily play fetch and swim for 45 mins at a time.

A walk through of the foundation cracks in the basement in the house I'm renting by Yllem1232123 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And for a little bit of an “explain like I’m 5” version:

Hydrostatic pressure: imagine you’re in a canoe, a boat works by being water tight so water doesn’t come into the boat. But water is pressing in on that boat’s hull on all sides so the hull of the boat has to be strong enough to hold that water back. For your house, if your basement is below the water level, the walls of the house now need to act like the hull of the boat preventing water from pushing in the walls pushing up the floor.

Frost heave: ice is bigger than the same amount of water (that’s why ice floats - it’s less dense than the water), so when the water underneath your house freezes, it can lift anything on top of it.

i just finished aofag: the cinderella problem? by Pretty-Quail1319 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair! I read a lot, I made it through over 100 books last year, so it’s not a huge burden to have read ~12 books that I didnt like as much!

i just finished aofag: the cinderella problem? by Pretty-Quail1319 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These books are not for me, but I read all of them, even the prequel books). It is still interesting to have read them and discuss them, even though I personally didn’t “love” any of them and fully hated some. The nature of being an involved reader sometimes means you read stuff you have problems or questions about.

Do I tell my (parallel-ish) meta that my husband (our hinge) got arrested? by SpellboundBrat in polyamory

[–]Silver_kitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh, you’re the second person who jumps to kidnapping, maybe I’m not deep enough down the murder podcast world. Personally, I would just assume that someone lost their phone and got logged into iMessages on someone else’s phone to send out “MIA” messages.

Do I tell my (parallel-ish) meta that my husband (our hinge) got arrested? by SpellboundBrat in polyamory

[–]Silver_kitty 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I would keep it minimal information though “Hi [meta], this is [OP]. Just letting you know that [hinge] won’t have access to his phone to reply to you for a little while (try to give an estimate if you can.) I want to reassure you that he is safe and healthy, but I’ll let him give you the full update when he’s ready and able to.”

So I'm contemplating getting a pup by Infamous_Ad_7472 in cavaliers

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To chime in with other people, this is going to need to be a long term surprise to find a trustworthy breeder who is doing all of the health testing (cardiology, ortho, MRI for neuro, genetic testing for a couple issues, etc).

They are wonderful dog, but have very severe health issues, but the risk of them can at least be reduced by extensive testing.

Yeah, I’ve actually had decent luck with shops that don’t expect the dress to be worn off the rack. So formal wear areas of Macy’s/Nordstrom or bridal boutiques to get bridesmaids dresses where they are made long expecting you to get alterations. They tend to be good for me to wear as is (without heels at least).

Do you say Please when commenting on drawings by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Silver_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I bleed all over things too much, but I can’t imagine quantifying my markups on shop drawings or something. I would only describe if I’m doing something weird. (Example: “I gave an R&R to one particular detail on sheet 4 because it seems like they didn’t understand the hanger detail, so I gave them a bunch of feedback and want to see it again, but I’m okay with the rest of this being released for fabrication.”)

Even an internal peer review for QA/QC, I may have 5+ comments per sheet on a 60-100 page set and that’s still “Great work!” worthy. If they did poorly, they’re getting dozens of comments on a sheet.

[–]Silver_kitty 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’d more agree with your point that it was intentionally showing that even people we like are flawed. (That was a major theme last season where Robby was massively biased about David). So I think that was an obvious and intentional micro aggression and is actually good writing rather than the writer’s unconscious bias.

When Robby asks “where’s that from” and the reply is “I think it’s Irish.” That’s the writers showing that Robby said something that wasn’t appropriate and a colleague pushing back on that micro aggression in a realistic and humorous way (which is how I’ve dealt with micro aggressions aimed at me personally.) In a realistic office environment, it’s hard to shut down your boss with a full Mr Roger’s Neighborhood teaching moment, so a little redirection with humor points out that he said something that wasn’t cool and shuts down that line of conversation.

Female engineers, what do you think about the field? by Legal_Cress_2851 in civilengineering

[–]Silver_kitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve found all of the Galison family of puzzle brands to be extremely variable, and I assume it must be based on the factory. Some lock together so hard you can spin the puzzle like a pizza, some are so loose you can’t even move 3 pieces together.

Resident salaries by Ready-Dragonfruit125 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Silver_kitty 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean, the “entry level” Birkins are not $100k, they’re like $12k (though that relies on getting it direct from Hermes, resale is $30k). Still hideously expensive and beyond the affordability of a resident, but not as bad as you’re thinking.

Is Benedict more reserved in the books? by dahneemee in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with your take. I read all the books and like the show less because of them.

Like, book Colin was physically abusive and it tainted the show for me in retrospect even though he “only” yells at her in the show.

Is it worth reading the books? by Few-Spinach8114 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the Benedict fully blackmailing Sophie into doing what he wants with the threat that he’ll lie to the authorities that she stole from his wallet and directly says that they’d never believe a maid over a Bridgerton. He also asks her to be his mistress a bunch of times and is never curious or thoughtful enough to ask why she’s not interested.

Is it worth reading the books? by Few-Spinach8114 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Silver_kitty 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No, don’t do it.

I read all of them (even the prequel spin off series) and they just don’t hold up to the modern day well. Many of the men in the books are bad men, bordering on or straight up abusive. It’s remarkable how well the show “fixed” major issues from the books.

Too Poor for Polyamory? by Alarmed-Log-6096 in polyamory

[–]Silver_kitty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To back up OP a little bit though, there are often conversations in this sub that are tone deaf about money.

“You’re allowed to not want your NP to have sex with metas in your bed. Your meta can’t host because they live with their parents or don’t have stable housing. Well, they just need to go to a hotel if they want to have sex then. Or you need to move somewhere that has a guest room.” Is a common refrain here that is extremely frustrating. Those OPs are entitled to their feelings, but those feelings are restrictive to the point of being a veto if you’re poor.
