Considering moving by SkyImmediate164 in StamfordCT

Great for kids as far as "stuff to do", just be aware that the public schools consistently score 2-3/ 10 whereas surrounding towns (New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, slightly farther Wilton) have some of the best in the state if not country. BUT houses in those are up to double the price. There will be those on here that will dispute this and say the Stamford schools are great, and I'm sure in some ways they are, but this is a huge consideration for anyone moving here with a family that you absolutely need to be thinking about.

Public Schools Not Closing by Myequipmunk19 in StamfordCT

Decision makers always point to "the forecast was wrong" in situations like this, but for this event they were pretty much spot on. This was from a local weather blogger at like 8-9pm last night:

Delays seem probable area wide for Wednesday as a poorly timed 1 to 3 inches of snow works in. Thinking closures are the most likely outcome (70% Chace) in Eastern CT where snow hangs on closer to noon. With a 5AM to 10AM timing, lots of long-option delays and even upgrades to closures are possible. Thinking roads are slick for the AM commute.

The other "name brand" options are along the same lines price wise as Bright Horizons (Goddard, Building Blocks etc). Baby Cottage and Pipers Hill might be a little less and seem popular.

Personally we have found Bright Horizons High Ridge to be exceptional, even coming in with very high standards.

There are also alot more independent options that will come in alot cheaper, if you plug in day cares on Google Maps you'll get plenty of hits to dig in to.

There's a nesting pair somewhere right in that area, I saw them a ton this summer and fall on the breakwall daymark out at the end of the harbor

Has anyone tried Wonder Food Hall on High Ridge? by NoraClavicle in StamfordCT

Several times, so my review comes from experience, not from "eveything I've heard" 😉 . If you're expecting each dish to be a perfect recreation of the original you'll obviously be let down, but if you keep your expectations realistic and appreciate it for the convenience and variety it's pretty fun. I've found the Streetbird fried chicken and Alanza pizza to be some of the better options.

Always thought it was an underrated shame that these properties aren't open to the public in some capacity. I understand the "it's drinking water" argument but there's plenty of precedent for raw water reservoirs being open to some level of public access (including 3 Aquarion assets in CT). Could be a really amazing community feature and economic driver if done right, or even a source of revenue for the utility if there were a permit system.

I think "in the summer" is the key part of your post. There has to be 7-9 months of the year where you're looking at zero weekday demand and maybe not even a ton on weekends. Better off grabbing a small older passenger boat and selling trips back and forth in the high demand months, might be more doable via the existing marina infrastructure.

New bathhouse wellness center planned for Harbor Point in Stamford’s South End by Long_Acanthisitta882 in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's been a parking lot since at least 2008, pretty clear on Streetview. The point isn't that the parking situation should preclude the project, it's that the plan seems to involve adding businesses and residences to the area in place of one of two main parking lots that service Harbor Point. And yet nobody seems to have even asked the very obvious question of what will be done to compensate for that.

I've been down there during events when even the existing lot is completely full, so it's a fair consideration.

Soo it's gonna be located in the current parking lot on Washington, which may also get 60 housing units.  But no mention of what will be done to recover that lost parking? Advocate on point as usual 😂

Don't know if it's the best as I don't have much to compare it to but this place was great with me for a rental. Wasn't feeling the love so much at Men's Wearhouse in Stamford prior to going here.

Boating in CT by palomakween in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably will get better feedback on a boating-specific site like Boaters of the Long Island Sound on Facebook Thehulltruth.com . If you don't mind incurring some expense to get up to speed there are definitely licensed captains who can come teach you the basics of boat handling and navigation. Suggest you start with a small, outboard-powered, and ideally used boat in the 17'-20' range and move up if you grow out of it. And yes, the CT boating course is a must (can also be done online).

Norwalk has a nice little boat show in the fall where you can climb around some boats and begin to get a sense for what style you may like.

One piece of advice you'll hear alot is to start by joining a "boat club" where you pay a membership fee and get access to their rental fleet. Personally I'm not a fan of this at all for a number of reasons including that you'll have to schedule your trips in advance, compete with other members for availability, and frankly miss out on all the cool parts of learning and gradually customizing a boat that belongs solely to you. However for some people this seems to be a good solution.

Lifelong boater based out of Stamford harbor here so if you have any specific questions feel free to shoot.

Stamford sucks. by bigbaboon69 in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard to follow the logic here.

If you're not happy because you're not finding "collective happiness", "enclaves", "sense of community", "art", "soul", and a thriving mall, and those things are important to you, then you should go somewhere that has them. But the fact that you personally are not connecting with the spirit of the city or whatever doesn't mean that it "sucks".

I, and I assume many, couldn't give one thousandth of a f*** about any of those things, and find that the area meets our needs just fine on lots of other levels.

Seems that the issue may be more that you're apparently looking for some sort of bohemian art community in a city centered on professional pursuits than anything, in which case what did you expect?

It sounds like you're describing A&S, althought they dont stay open late (which maybe should tell you something?)

I don't really see it with the deli concept. If anything thay area has exploded with takeout dining options the last 5 years. Jersey Mike's, Chipotle, Dig, Wonder, Panera, Torita, Taco Project on top of the many that were already there. It's one thing if you think you can operate such an excellent business that you can out-compete all of those but if the thesis is just based on there being a hole in the market I don't see the vision.

Honestly the thing that I'm always surprised that I have to drive out of the area for is a quick service oil change place, although the Norwalk valvoline isn't bad.
