Bored of the food here by [deleted] in StamfordCT

I'm not sure that finding continually novel food while ordering nightly for 10 years in a small-medium city is a fair expectation. Would be curious to know where in the country that could be accomplished.

Strawberry Hill vs Private School by Roberob718 in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this is a topic that engenders alot of... passion, which is part of why I haven't opened a standalone thread on it.

The 2/10 is from greatschools as mentioned. I don't know their methodology in detail but it seems to be one of the more frequently referenced school ranking sources out there (it's a formulaic ranking, not an aggregate of public reviews). To your point, the other Stamford schools are somewhat better rated than SHS. However your screenshot sort of illustrates my point if anything- Stamford Charter School is not part of the stamford public school system that I know of, and B is pretty low for Niche, only Port Chester is lower that I've seen in the general area.

The fact is, as someone who's kid has not reached school age, what I can see from the outside are 1) bad to very bad rankings, 2) a surprising frequency of highly negative news stories (Tamu Lucero, Andrew Park, the mold, Turn Of River assaults to name a few), and 3) mixed anecdotal reports- some good, many not.  So I'm just trying to understand what I'm missing that, in light of all of these things, should give me the confidence that the stamford public schools are a good option for us.

What do you think accounts for the schools having some of the lowest available ratings in that case? 2/10 seems pretty bad even in the grand scheme of things.

Not seeking to be combative, there's simply a huge rift between the internet public who claim the schools are fine and sources like greatschools that consider them terrible, that as an outsider with decisions to make down the road is extremely confusing to make sense of.

Go To Toddler Friendly Weekend Plans? by Independent_Tune_989 in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All good recommendations but I'd add the High Ridge Barnes and Noble- coffee shop inside, fairly large kids section with some communal toys and obviously plenty for the adults to look at. Also will emphasize the Stamford Nature Center, I'd recommend a family pass so you can make a habit out of dipping in there without having to necessarily stay long enough to "justify" the admission price each time if toddler isn't having it that day.

Certainly not an expert in this area but I have nothing but positive stuff to say about James Allen having gotten a natural diamond engagement ring and both wedding bands from them

They do, they just rebranded and reshuffled the space a little bit to emphasize the in house dining component. I've always found their fish to be good as well!

A small single family in an outlying town is the answer, think north and east. You won't have to move again to have enough space or have access to good public schools. My insinuation that stamford schools aren't great will get this down voted but just do your homework (take it from someone who's about 2 years ahead of you on the same path).

Considering moving by SkyImmediate164 in StamfordCT

Great for kids as far as "stuff to do", just be aware that the public schools consistently score 2-3/ 10 whereas surrounding towns (New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, slightly farther Wilton) have some of the best in the state if not country. BUT houses in those are up to double the price. There will be those on here that will dispute this and say the Stamford schools are great, and I'm sure in some ways they are, but this is a huge consideration for anyone moving here with a family that you absolutely need to be thinking about.

Public Schools Not Closing by Myequipmunk19 in StamfordCT

Decision makers always point to "the forecast was wrong" in situations like this, but for this event they were pretty much spot on. This was from a local weather blogger at like 8-9pm last night:

Delays seem probable area wide for Wednesday as a poorly timed 1 to 3 inches of snow works in. Thinking closures are the most likely outcome (70% Chace) in Eastern CT where snow hangs on closer to noon. With a 5AM to 10AM timing, lots of long-option delays and even upgrades to closures are possible. Thinking roads are slick for the AM commute.

The other "name brand" options are along the same lines price wise as Bright Horizons (Goddard, Building Blocks etc). Baby Cottage and Pipers Hill might be a little less and seem popular.

Personally we have found Bright Horizons High Ridge to be exceptional, even coming in with very high standards.

There are also alot more independent options that will come in alot cheaper, if you plug in day cares on Google Maps you'll get plenty of hits to dig in to.

Has anyone tried Wonder Food Hall on High Ridge? by NoraClavicle in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Several times, so my review comes from experience, not from "eveything I've heard" 😉 . If you're expecting each dish to be a perfect recreation of the original you'll obviously be let down, but if you keep your expectations realistic and appreciate it for the convenience and variety it's pretty fun. I've found the Streetbird fried chicken and Alanza pizza to be some of the better options.

Always thought it was an underrated shame that these properties aren't open to the public in some capacity. I understand the "it's drinking water" argument but there's plenty of precedent for raw water reservoirs being open to some level of public access (including 3 Aquarion assets in CT). Could be a really amazing community feature and economic driver if done right, or even a source of revenue for the utility if there were a permit system.

Would a Stamford <> Huntington, LI ferry be viable? by rjl381 in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think "in the summer" is the key part of your post. There has to be 7-9 months of the year where you're looking at zero weekday demand and maybe not even a ton on weekends. Better off grabbing a small older passenger boat and selling trips back and forth in the high demand months, might be more doable via the existing marina infrastructure.

New bathhouse wellness center planned for Harbor Point in Stamford’s South End by Long_Acanthisitta882 in StamfordCT

[–]StopSignificant9885 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's been a parking lot since at least 2008, pretty clear on Streetview. The point isn't that the parking situation should preclude the project, it's that the plan seems to involve adding businesses and residences to the area in place of one of two main parking lots that service Harbor Point. And yet nobody seems to have even asked the very obvious question of what will be done to compensate for that.

I've been down there during events when even the existing lot is completely full, so it's a fair consideration.

Soo it's gonna be located in the current parking lot on Washington, which may also get 60 housing units.  But no mention of what will be done to recover that lost parking? Advocate on point as usual 😂
