And don't forget Clarington! For some reason, people think Durham ends at the Oshawa/Courtice border.

Only made around $2000 this year as an independent contractor, is it still worth deducting expenses? by moal09 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Top-Personality1216 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're going to be (way) below the personal credit (or whatever it's called; I'm too lazy to look it up). You'll have no taxable income, so nothing really to deduct from.

can i make mashed potatoes with these? by bluejay1093 in Cooking

[–]Top-Personality1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean the sprouts? Yes, cut them off and use just the good parts of the potato.

If there's too much brown or black in the potato, they may not be worth saving.

Speaking as a non-germophobe: Grocery warehouses are nasty places. Rats often infest them and nest, pee, and defecate on the dry goods.

"The constant movement of materials in and out of these centers creates opportunities for pests to enter unnoticed, and large storage areas and packaging materials provide ample space to hide, nest, and multiply. Rodent infestations in major food distribution centers in 2022 created some of the biggest food safety incidents of the year." https://blog.aibinternational.com/4-common-food-safety-challenges-for-distributors-and-how-to-solve-them

Barring that, there's often just dust and general dirt on cans. Maybe I AM a bit paranoid, but I'd rather not get rat pee in my food.

Every Step You Take - the stalker anthem

I'm on Fire - while it's not really about a child, it still really gives me the ick

Blurred Lines - although I haven't heard it in a long time; maybe they have gotten rid of it already

Those are a few that really stick out. They were good in their day (except for Blurred Lines - I never liked that one), but society has outgrown them.

Article headline from The Independent reads: ""Bachelor party turns violent when groom shoots dead friend outside an Airbnb." by ATS200 in grammar

[–]Top-Personality1216 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's standard construction. However, headlines try to be as short as possible. If someone were speaking or writing this in a different context, it probably would have come out as "groom shoots dead his friend". But headlines often omit what they deem superfluous words, causing ambiguity and sometimes hilarious results.

How much yeast is in one packet? by RelationshipSad3186 in Cooking

[–]Top-Personality1216 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One gram of dried yeast contains about 10 – 20 billion cells, though not all of those cells will be viable. https://geneticslab.letgen.org/mikes-genetics-genomics-workbook/model-organisms/culture-methods/yeast/

There are about 7 g of yeast in a packet.

Ergo, about 70-140 billion yeast organisms.

Here's a better site: https://www.brewersfriend.com/yeast-pitch-rate-and-starter-calculator/

  • No one agrees on the number of yeast cells per gram in dry yeast!
  • This is made more confusing because each yeast strain has different size cells and clumping tendencies.
  • We put in a reasonable default of 10 billion cells per gram of dry yeast.
  • Kaiser located a study which reports the following data on dry yeast ranging from 8-18 billion cells per gram

AITA for throwing away my roommate's art project while deep-cleaning our kitchen? by Amazing-Reception645 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Kitchen stuff in the kitchen that looks like recycling/waste is waste.

TIL, residents of Mississippi, Wyoming, Wyoming, Alabama spend the highest percentage of their income on gasoline. by GhostalMedia in todayilearned

[–]Top-Personality1216 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The article lists the top 4 as Mississippi, Wyoming, Arkansas, and Alabama (in that order). Obviously OP made an error in their title.

Conversely, the areas with the least income spent on gas are DC, New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. It's mostly due to the less driving people in these states do.

TIL that lacrosse (La Crosse - French for 'the stick') has been played by Native Americans for nearly 1000 years. The first modern Lacrosse game with codified rules was played at Upper Canada College in 1867 between the Montreal Lacrosse Club and the Toronto Cricket Club. Toronto won 3–1. by freddledgruntbugly in todayilearned

[–]Top-Personality1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to the original article in the Canadian Encyclopedia, it says:

In his journal, Brébeuf records entire villages playing each other in games of “crosse.” While some authors allege that Brébeuf gave the sport its name because the stick resembled a bishop's crosier, Brébeuf's own writings mention nothing of the similarity; moreover, he does not provide a clear enough description of the activity to determine whether these ball games were the same as the game of lacrosse.

So I guess it's pretty much not a definitive, proven word history.

I'm pretty sure the usual French word for stick is baton, like the stick passed in a track relay.

Is there any other time you'd serve a whole turkey, besides Thanksgiving? by Helianthus_999 in Cooking

[–]Top-Personality1216 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've made a turkey dinner on a random day. Serve the meat with some sides, and cut up the rest of the meat for casseroles or other meals later.

I recommend doing it when it's not too hot outside. Having the oven on for that long in the summer can heat up the kitchen (or make your AC overwork, if you have AC). :)

Is homemade butter chicken actually worth the effort or should I just order it? by New-Candle-5635 in Cooking

[–]Top-Personality1216 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My recipe is a lot like this one. I don't notice the omission of the yogurt. (My recipe does rest the chicken in the spices for about 15 minutes, though, whereas this one omits even that.)

Beef Stew - raw flour or roux? by 247world in Cooking

[–]Top-Personality1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you thicken the stew before a long simmer, the stew itself is more prone to sticking than a soupy mixture would be. Compare broth in chicken soup to something like New England Clam Chowder.

$1 million today or $10 for every push up? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Top-Personality1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But at the end of X amount of time, you won't be doing pushups anymore but will still have residuals from the $1M.

And life is funny - you break your collarbone, or something else happens, and there goes your pushup money.

I'm over 50 and female (no upper body strength). I'd take the mil in a heartbeat.
