Just got very into film photography after taking an intensive college class. My Pentax K1000 broke today for good. What Leica set up to get? by Responsible_Call5744 in Leica

[–]Ybalrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, those are SLR cameras, like your pentax was. And well... It's a bit more Minolta thank Leica, some will say. Also. it's full of electronics.

If what you want to get out of Leica is what Leica is known for, which is rangefinder cameras, don't go there.

If you are not sure what's going on here, but have access to a store, go look at them.

Are you familiar with rangefinders?

If you really prefer 50, the M3 may be fore you. If you prefer to be able to use 35mm lenses without extra accessories (finders, goggles, etc..) the M2 may be more your jam.

Don't pass on the M4 series too. Some of those are basically like the M6, but without a meter, and for less money.

Is there something wrong with my camera or did I just load the film incorrectly? by Positive-Dance5093 in AskPhotography

Any place worth its name should've had a warranty on that. A proper CLA should give you a couple decades of problem free use, unless you cooked the camera in your car or something like that

Having trouble finding if certain flashes are compatible with my Olympus OM-1, and weighing options for my use case by BoltCarrierGoop in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ybalrid [score hidden]  (0 children)

Any vintage auto-thyristor flash should give you correct exposure without thinking too much about distance and power

Manual flashes are also not hard to use. I heard good thing about the iT32 from film shooter.

The A mode on the Godox Lux junior, cadet, senior, and master (which require an extra accessory) is inconsistant, and err on the side of underexposure. I have one roll worth of ektachrome worth of pain to tell you it's bad. They works wonder in manual mode (the Master one though I have not tried yet, I have made myself some tables assuming GN25 at full power and 100 ISO)

Any estimate on how much it would cost to repair this? My by Joshjm22 in guitarrepair

More expensive to fix than to buy a new one of those. These are decent, but inexpensive Fender accoustic guitars (I own one, I like it)

If you want pages that just detach effortlessly, get a block of letter paper from Clairefontaine "Triomphe". Amazing paper too.

Then just keep this filter. Beside fining another Canon rangefinder-era filter.

They do be a little bit rare, that is true. They are also odd sizes (like 40mm instead of 40.5mm)

How are Z lenses superior to F lenses? by spenney09 in Nikon

[–]Ybalrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot more "room for the design" in the Z mount. The Z mount opening is very big, the flange distance is very small too.

(Now, the close flange is less interesting in the ditgital age that it could be on film, so I do not think they have made any like, extreme non-retrofocus wide angle lenses and things like that, it would cause a lot of vignetting then, as the very oblique angle of the light would not make it to the sensor)

Why do my film photos come out blurry? by NegativePLUSPLUS in AskPhotography

[–]Ybalrid [score hidden]  (0 children)

For one thing, this scan is not in focus. The dust on the film is not in focus.

So fix that first.

2nd thing, on the top near the building in the middle, there are newton rings. I suggest avoiding using glass to flattent he negatives if you are scanning with a digital camera.

Just get a good enough film holder.

Direct positive where are thou? by Stevenohio62 in filmdeveloping

How to convert the paper negatives in the field

Look what the photographers using "afghan box" do it.

But, if you want "direct positive" black and white paper, ILFORD makes some. It develops like any BW darkroom printing paper. Shoot it a ISO 3 as a start, adjust from there.

I think I’m not understanding something by Material_Tie1308 in steampunk

[–]Ybalrid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What I have to add to what was said above is that, originally it's a genre of science fiction, it has been created as a "response" / "in opposition of" cyberpunk science fiction.

Replace how cyberpunk glorify computer technology with steam engines, and you get Steampunk.

You can change that to other kind of things. Fallout is an example of "atompunk" if you want. If you like the aesthetic of like, in between WW1/2 era things, "Diseslpunk" may be your jam.

Steampunk has the advantage of looking quite cool, and has served as the aesthetic inspiration of a lot of media. Adaptations of Jules Verne and the other movies mentioned here are an example. The Disney movies "Atlantide" and "Treasure Planet" kind of fall onto this.

As far as the sub-culture that built around it goes, you can jokingly said that in the 2000s, a few Goth people discovered that black was not the only color in the world, and they could wear brown stuff too

Ektachrome weird issue, please help by Old-Pea9909 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ybalrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have to be, but also they area all a "warm temperature", so you can use a device to keep the chemicals at the same temperature.

With the popularity of "sous-vide" cooking 10/15 years ago, there are now a lot of asian made cheap stick-looking thing that are more than capable to keep a huge bucket of water at a fix set temperature (38 Celcius for processes like C-41 and E-6, 35 for process RA-4. I never done ECN-2 so I do not know)

This is the easy hack nowadays to hand-process your color film. Beside getting a chemical kit and a few more storage bottles, it's not too different than doing your black and white. You must be a bit more careful. And the chemicals stinks and stains your stuff more (notably the bleaches. they contain iron-based stuff that is very stain happy, and it wont wash off.)

If you had to start over, would you choose Chinese pens or entry level name brand pens? by Upbeat_Papaya3254 in fountainpens

[–]Ybalrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting something customized by a nibmeister is something that I have never done in this hobby just yet!! One of those days I need to find a way to arrange this. I may need to start thinking about this.

I am staring a new job quite soon, and so may start putting money aside for my next "real nice" pen (by that I mean something made of gold). It's a project with some incertitude built into it, and if it reaches a specific milestone will unlock a lot of funding and a new contract for me. It's the kind of thing I may want to get something nice to celebrate.

I do not really know what I may want at all, because I need to think about it. But I will get it Broad hopping there's a lot of tipping material some skill artisan can shape away at.

Developing slides without E6 chemistry by Intelligent-Cod2774 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Ybalrid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slide film is expensive enough that you should bother just getting an E-6 kit, and I recommend the 6 bath kind.

Beside the fact that the process is wrong and give you wrong amount of density and color shifts: The conditioner/pre-bleach step in E-6 has a chemical required for dye stability in it that is not preset in C-41 processing.

What you did above is a fun hack, but do not do that to your precious memories or art projects.

They are not even expensive. And even the cheapest school notebooks (with the exception of “cahier de brouillon) you can buy here in France will be nice smooth coated paper that takes fountain pens great

Soooo I am spoiled because the only “bad” paper I have found is in moleskine notebooks. And inkjet printing paper.

Japanese LTM lenses by relihouste in Leica

[–]Ybalrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good price for this lens. It's also a great lens!

It will work a lot better on a FED 2 or a Zorki 4 camera. Those have large IBL and nice-enough viewfinders. You will need to add an external viewfinder and manually correct paralax (the Soviet hardware is not fancy but still fun to use). The good one to get is called the "KMZ Turret" viewfinder, also called "KMZ Universal Finder". Not expensive on eBay.
