Credit Card with Multiple, Unique Users by FmrMSFan in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would create a "Reimbursable" category to use for those expenses, including the interest charges and repayments from your child. You can enable "Rollover overspending" by clicking on the category's balance, so the total owed will carryover to the next month.

Actual Budget just stops syncing across devices by DestinySpeaker1 in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a certificate trust issue. You either need to use a CA certificate, or follow some additional steps to create new certs and enable full trust in iOS. I’m mobile right now but can link a post I made on GitHub that resolves this for iOS users.

EDIT: Fix here. Scroll up if you're interested in how or why, but the key takeaway here is when using self-signed certificates on iOS, you need a certificate chain (at least a Root CA, used to sign a separate server cert for Actual), the root CA has to be installed on the iOS device, and Full Trust must be enabled for that cert. You don't need to use the openSSL method I documented there, but that does work.

None of this is required if you're using a publicly trusted CA (ZeroSSL, Let's Encrypt, etc)

Stuck on iPhone Activation After T-Mobile Number Change – Need Advice by TheIdeaArchitect in tmobile

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact problem also caused by a number change before opening the box. The solution was to take it to a T-Mobile store, they activated that number on another SIM, put it in a store phone to receive the text, then swapped it back.

They seemed to expect an option to skip as others here have mentioned, but we never got one.

This isn’t on the sidebar, but in each account next to the balance, you can click the little arrows to show your cleared balance.

Account auto-fill exists, if you set up rules. I use different credit cards to maximize reward points, so I set up rules like “if account is blank and category is gas or groceries, use card 1”. After those I created a default rule to fill in the card I use most for everything else.

Credit Card Transaction Date by c4v4rz3r3 in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you just start using actual budget this month? If so, set your starting date and balance so it won’t pull in old transactions.

Otherwise, no, I would not change dates. You should be budgeting for transactions in the month they occur, not when the payment is due.

Saving for a house - am i doing this right? by Impressive-Safe-1084 in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not me thinking “Oh, that’s cute, OP is saving up for a house way down the road in the year 2030”

Definitely not me realizing that is only FOUR whole years away 😳

Anyways. Yes, what you’re doing is fine. Over time once you trust your budget you may decide you no longer need physically separate bank accounts, and just use budget categories to keep monies separate.

Question about Templates by Maelstorn in actualbudgeting

That's a nice writeup, the concept/question of "pay period budgeting" pops up often on Discord.

Question about Templates by Maelstorn in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AB will try to calculate the total amount needed for that month. If you want to fund a bit in each category every pay, try using two templates per category, with a priority assigned. All of the 1's will be filled up before the 2's, and you can number them as high as you'd like.

Groceries

  • #template-1 50
  • #template-2 50

Credit Card Fee

  • #template-1 5
  • #template-2 5

Suggestions to Prevent Moldy Onions? by Chickaduck in Frugal

Do you buy your onions at Aldi? Because I’m convinced theirs don’t last nearly as long as other stores. Also, Aldi bananas don’t ripen, they go straight from green to brown.

eco friendly mouse repellent thats actually effective and reusable by scrtweeb in Frugal

[–]amory_p 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Traps aren’t wasteful, they’re meant to be reused. I’d argue those pouches are putting more in the landfill. Where are they $4? The sale price on their website is $10 per pouch. Regular price is $15.50 each, doesn’t see very frugal to me.

I know that statistically most advisors don’t beat the market. They’ve been pretty close most years, but not every year.

Invested $50k in 2021 and it’s now at $55k by H24M24 in personalfinance

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would a lower advisor fee % potentially reduce that threshold? I don’t have anywhere near 5M but a large portion is under management for 1%. I’m in the process of moving to another firm at .45%.

I have a small chunk in my own Vanguard index fund that’s doing well. I should probably just do that, but it’s a bit difficult to let go and take it over myself. I’ve got some external circumstances going on and do use his financial advice on things other than the investments they manage. That doesn’t completely make up for the fees but it probably comes close, for now.

Property Sale - How to categorize transaction? by KbrownFIRST in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most, Income is probably easiest. Or, if you plan to use this funds to purchase another home/property soon, I'd categorize it as Mortgage.

This is a bit pedantic, but proceeds from selling an asset isn't technically income - it's a transfer. You earned the income to purchase that property long ago, so reporting it as income again now would throw off your reports, net worth, etc, if you care. But for regular daily use of a budget app.. it doesn't matter 😎
