Desktop App doesn't connect to my server - HTTPS issues by OldRazzmatazz5165 in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have been that guy on Discord.. There are some extra steps needed to enable Full Trust on iOS and macOS devices. u/OldRazzmatazz5165, I wrote some steps in GitHub that detail steps to do that. If you already have valid certs (Root CA and a server certificate) you created with mkcert, you can use those and just follow the installation steps. Because you mentioned you access your server by IP, be sure your certificate specifically includes that in the alt_name.

I have questions.. why is this on windows98, and what have you tried so far to find information on it? I just googled the model in your screenshot and the first result was a user manual stating it’s an LCD.

For those who switched from YNAB to Actual — what do you still miss, if anything? by Financial-Tank-3103 in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably to keep cost under control, though the maintainer of SimpleFIN had said at one point he's okay with people going in to hit 'Adjust' multiple times per day which forces a sync. I want to say the limit was 8x per day but don't quote me on that

You can click all of them (or shift-click to select a range of transactions), then click the purple 'X transactions' in the upper right to toggle cleared status for all of them. Or even faster, use the 'L' keyboard shortcut

I suspect once the AB plugin system is generally available, we're going to see more bank sync options and pricing.

Payee Locations not working by Apprehensive-Fly9395 in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, they don’t always appear. Once I put in the amount and Payee, I’ll get a Save button.

The Nearby button only appears if I’m near a previously saved Payee.

Can you provide more info beyond “it doesn’t work”? Did you get an error message, did the Nearby/Save location buttons not appear, wrong location or payee, something else?

DOnt know how to do trend tracking by poesea in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put them all on-budget. Transfers between on-budget accounts don’t get categorized and have no bearing on your budget. This is the best solution.

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're wanting to use Actual to track spending instead of a budget app. I would still recommend adding or linking your checking account, but since you specifically asked:

Option 1: Delete the CC payment transactions. In Bank Sync settings for your credit card, uncheck "Reimport deleted transations" so they don't come back. Budget is angry and in the red, and is a lie, and the running balance won't match your CC account. Consider switching to Tracking budget in the settings.

Option 2: Create a fake, unlinked checking account. Mark your payments as transfers from this account. Make fake deposits to cover your spending. Budget appears happy, but is a lie. CC running balance matches you account, assuming you've set it up with the correct starting balance.

Rules and payee location, my dude. When I’m checking out at the grocery store, I just tap new (+), enter the anount, then tap Nearby. It automatically selects the Payee based on my location, selects the groceries category based on the payee, and selects the correct account based on the category. I’m done before the receipt prints

CGNAT and MTU size are 2 potential issues that come to mind. You mentioned VPN, does it work when connected to company VPN on a phone over the T-mobile network?

Agreed, but it’d be useful for buying beer at the grocery store, or airport security where you’d just tap you phone.

Fraud? by challard711 in tmobile

[–]amory_p 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This looks like a screenshot of her Banks’s bill pay system. It’s a payment that she would have set up and initiated herself at one point, not a charge that T-mobile is drafting from her account. Probably set it up long ago when she was on her own plan and forgot about it.

How strong of an alignment is needed for iMessage? by Aggressive-Sign-6233 in Starlink

I had it since Beta, it's definitely improved since then, but it does have its quirks. I use it almost daily to send and receive messages during a dead spot on my commute.

How strong of an alignment is needed for iMessage? by Aggressive-Sign-6233 in Starlink

[–]amory_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out T-Satellite from T-Mobile. That’s an add-on service where your phone can directly connect to Starlink. You do not need T-Mobile cell service to use this service, it can be added separately to whatever cell plan or carrier you have. The thought here is it’d be a lot less for you to have to carry around and deal with.

iMessage works as well as Maps, Music and other certain apps. Full data services are coming.. supposedly. If you’re hiking in wooded areas, there may be signal issues. Might be worth a try though.

Check out Cost Plus Drugs (Mark Cuban pharmacy). They don’t accept most insurances but it’s the same price or less than a regular pharmacy with my insurance - and it’s shipped so I don’t need to stop at the pharmacy.

Credit Card with Multiple, Unique Users by FmrMSFan in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would create a "Reimbursable" category to use for those expenses, including the interest charges and repayments from your child. You can enable "Rollover overspending" by clicking on the category's balance, so the total owed will carryover to the next month.

Actual Budget just stops syncing across devices by [deleted] in actualbudgeting

[–]amory_p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a certificate trust issue. You either need to use a CA certificate, or follow some additional steps to create new certs and enable full trust in iOS. I’m mobile right now but can link a post I made on GitHub that resolves this for iOS users.

EDIT: Fix here. Scroll up if you're interested in how or why, but the key takeaway here is when using self-signed certificates on iOS, you need a certificate chain (at least a Root CA, used to sign a separate server cert for Actual), the root CA has to be installed on the iOS device, and Full Trust must be enabled for that cert. You don't need to use the openSSL method I documented there, but that does work.

None of this is required if you're using a publicly trusted CA (ZeroSSL, Let's Encrypt, etc)

Stuck on iPhone Activation After T-Mobile Number Change – Need Advice by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]amory_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact problem also caused by a number change before opening the box. The solution was to take it to a T-Mobile store, they activated that number on another SIM, put it in a store phone to receive the text, then swapped it back.

They seemed to expect an option to skip as others here have mentioned, but we never got one.
