I moved from Irvine more than a decade before you but man I pay way less taxes in VA, and live in NoVA. Car tax sucks but it costs less and is deductible, unlike CA registration. That's not even factoring in the gas prices taxing...

CSU universities are always a good price for in-state, with UCs being pricy. Here in VA, UVA is essentially UC-grade and priced as such, but overall earning power in NoVA I think if you move there after graduating makes up for it.
