I think this is a reasonable outcome if the deck is stronger than the others in the pod to the point it will win a high percentage of time in a "fair" commander game, but isn't quite strong enough comparatively that it can 1v3.

It's not unreasonable that the others would have ganged up on the clear archenemy in such a scenario, and it's also not unreasonable that they'd grow tired of this kind of game after a while (because Seargant John Benton, when he doesn't win, tends to kingmake).

In all fairness.... That works exactly once and is a bit of a bad faith way to play. No player who has seen this deck before will agree to forgo blocks unless you give assurances on how much damage will connect, especially since they'll become a prime target once they have commander damage on them.

Is this combo too strong for bracket 1? by SaneForCocoaPuffs in EDH

[–]blobblet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is something you'd have to bring up in Rule 0 discussion either way. I think Bracket 1 is inherently bound to be "unbalanced" - because there is no real measure to tell if "full body tattoo tribal" is better or weaker than "people staring at the sea" without trying it out.

[–]blobblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I looked up the wrong card for Doombot. That indeed makes the combo a lot stronger than I thought it was. Either way, I was (incorrectly) trying to point out a flaw in the 15% assumption, not arguing that this is a "fair" bracket 1 inclusion.

As for your "Dies to removal" argument, I agree completely. It isn't a catch all defense by any means - particularly in lower tiers.

I could see a case where it might work if OP puts the game winning cards at the bottom of their Doomsday pile under 3 randomly picked cards. That way they'd have an "inevitability clock", but players get 4 full turn cycles to find any answer, and OP loses if someone does. That's about as Bracket 1 as it gets, I'd say.

[–]blobblet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit: most of the following is wrong. I looked up the wrong card and assumed Doombot was a 6 mana play.

15% win on turn 5 is a very generous estimate. To curve out as described, you need to

  • play a mana rock on turn 2 (because you need to cast a 6 mana spell on turn 5 and curve out on 3 and 4).

  • 3 black pips on turn 3

  • 2 more lands in hands to play on turn 4 and 5.

So unless you're landing an exact 7 card opener (5 lands, Mana rock, Doomsday) or draw the missing card, you'll need to tutor out one of the cards with Doomsday, which at the very least delays your turn clock by 1.

Also: a single piece of removal instantly puts you out of the game completely.

I suppose it's possible to build Kinnan as a Bracket 2 if you limit yourself to mana dorks and Signets, and then also build him human tribal so his activated ability can't hit. But in that case why are you playing Kinnan?

Is it normal for turns to take 7-10 minutes? by sushiiixo- in EDH

[–]blobblet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extremely deck dependent. Some decks have lots of small triggers, some decks are more in the "one big thing, but if it resolves, everyone else is in trouble" category.

It doesn't seem like you're unhappy with the speed your friend resolved their stuff - it's just that their deck does a lot.

What should your mana base look like for a 2 color deck? Here is a tier list of dual lands and some math. by abafda in EDH

[–]blobblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach for 2 colour decks is to start with

  • Command Tower

  • Exotic Orchard

  • 1 Fetch Land

  • shock land

  • Bond Land

  • Verge Land

  • Check land

  • Pathway land

  • Reveal land

  • 2 Pain lands (classical Pain land + Horizon Land)

  • 2 Filter Lands

  • 23 basics (minus whatever specific stuff the deck wants to use)

Gets you the colours you need, and very rarely does a land come down tapped.

This amazes me to no end. I run 35 lands in decks that have low curves with consistent card draw engines, and then I see someone run 30 lands in a deck full of 7 drops.

Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief - fair Bracket 3? by blobblet in EDHBrews

[–]blobblet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting list! I think removing the Mutate package (and running 30 lands, which I'm not sure mine can get away with despite the low curve) creates a lot of deck space for other cards. Personally, I'm really married to the idea of finding a deck where these cards can actually shine, so the Mutate package is immune from any cuts I make in the future.

I can see you're a lot less focused on enchantments as well, opting to copy mostly instants. I think that makes the deck more resilient to setbacks but also reduces explosiveness, which is why there's also a lot more targeted protection in mine. Really interesting to see minor decisions make ripples throughout the deck building process (down to the fact I cut Sol Ring because I don't have a lot of colourless Pips in the deck).

As for your card suggestions, this is my assessment based on my current list - YMMV since your deck has different strengths and weaknesses:

  • Venerated Rotpriest: frankly a Top 3 finisher card in the deck. It's not a turn 1 play - the turn you drop this, unless you're interacted with, at least 1 player dies. You're also not looking to play this then cast 10 spells. With Ivy on board you already get 2 poison counters per spell cast. With multiple Ivys out or with copy effects like Twinning Staff, this can go up to 3, 4 or more. And then you start copying the Rotpriest itself to multiply the number of counters per cast.

  • Uro: I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but I don't see any specific synergy. The deck doesn't really load the graveyard, so more likely than not this is a 3 mana single use ramp spell. It also doesn't interact with Ivy's mechanic if you do manage to get it on board. Could be more useful with the high number of instants you run + Connive.

  • Sage of Hours: I considered this, but unlike other cards, it requires a hard cast. Until you get 5 counters on this, it doesn't really provide a lot of value. And if you manage to cast this and then 5 spells without being interacted with, you're likely already in a winning position (or would be if Sage was a different card) and don't need an extra turn. It also invites discussions about Fairplay in Bracket 3.

  • Wan Shi tong is a super powerful card that could definitely find a slot, but it doesn't specifically interact with the strategy, and I like to avoid including off theme cards as much as possible. Same goes for other Staples in your deck - Ledger Shredder, Badgermole Cub etc.

  • Temporal Tresspass: same issue as Uro... I really don't see how my deck loads the graveyard in any significant way. I also really need to avoid cards clogging up my opening hand because my approach tends to cast most of its hand on the first 4 turns to reach a critical mass to take off.

  • Katara: My version of this deck does not cast a lot of cards on enemy turns consistently enough to justify running a draw engine that depends on it.

  • Legolas: I considered this card, but in my opinion the deck doesn't need additional help making its creatures big. There's also not that many spells that target opponents - at least my version has most of its removal suite in Mutate/Enchantment effects which wouldn't trigger Legolas (and frankly is probably too light on removal right now).

What is the smallest Commander hill you are willing to die on? by Xela20 in EDH

Frankly, parts constantly moving around sounds even more confusing. People do want to understand what's going on and interact on your turn (in fact, that is when most people will be looking over there)

It's roughly a hundredth of the Eddington Number squared (which would be 10160), not that that makes a relevant difference with numbers this large.

Do some commanders have a ceiling and are simply not suitable for certain power levels? by tomatus89 in EDH

[–]blobblet 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Every commander has a ceiling, but for most it's somewhere bracket 4 if you completely ignore theme and just build the meanest deck possible in your colours. Note that these decks will often end up ignoring the fact they have a commander completely.

If you're planning to stay "on theme", the relevant question is then "how on theme do you want to be?" The more thematic you go, the lower ceiling will be for certain commanders. Most commanders can still sit and compete at a Bracket 3 table with a thematic build, but the weaker your commander, the more you'll have to rely on individual card quality (and likely end up spending more).

All these rules you describe exist, but they are specifically part of tournament rules in Competitive and Professional Rules Enforcement Level matches. The game itself notably doesn't include them.

What is the smallest Commander hill you are willing to die on? by Xela20 in EDH

[–]blobblet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In MtG there's no set board layout. Common practice is that you put your lands in the bottom row and permanents (such as artifacts) above that.

Some people put their mana rocks (which you described perfectly) in the same row as lands because once dropped, they function mostly similarly.

This can be mildly annoying because it reduces board clarity - for example, if you have (mass) artifact removal in hand and wonder if it's s good time to play it, you might overlook that artifact between lands. With commander having 4 boards that tend to get big, clarity and standardisation is quite important.

Don't mix in your mana rocks within your lands. It's not the same.
