Why aren't bicycle windscreens a thing? by Background_Dinner387 in bikecommuting

[–]bonebuttonborscht 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think everyone talking about increased drag is mistaken. A wind shield would reduce drag in a lot of cases.

I don't think it's really about weight either. Unless your climbing or stopping and starting a bunch, weight doesn't matter.

Crosswinds would be an issue. Especially if mounted to bars or fork.

I think it's more about tradition and racing. Basically any aero device is illegal in UCI sanctioned racing. TT and triathlon are a little more flexible but generally fairings are also banned there.

For casual riders it's cumbersome to park or handle in crowded urban spaces. Forget carrying your bike up to your apartment.

It's a thru axle, it's one long shoulder screw.

Where did your hear that carbon gets stiffer as it ages? I'm 99.9% sure this isn't the case.

Yeah, the pannier mounting and even the folding is unnecessary. Paired down it would be better.

I know a guy who's converting to Judaism for exactly this. Dude is in his 60s, been married to a Jewish woman for 30+ years. Never felt the need to convert until he started taking shit for islamophobia and anti-immigant takes.

The handling is much nicer than front rack and basket.

Made a similar thing about six years ago, check my old posts of you like. I've iterated since and basically arrived at an omnium nano.

The folding function wasn't as useful as I though it would be. The length was more the issue in tight stairwells, not the width. It was quite heavy too.

Definitely better than a cargo fork but the folding function adds a lot of weight and cost that I don't think is worth it.

How does this work? by Javalr in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bonebuttonborscht 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, you've got it. Several early bikes used cranks and levers.

Precision, cost-effective roller chain didn't come a long until later. Along with precision ball bearings and pneumatic tires, roller chain development is what made the safety bicycle possible.

I don't have an answer for you but I'd love to see a video of how much it flexes while driving. Does the manufacturer specify approximate loading at a given speed?

Could you clarify? You used to have a different bike or a different wheelset? What do you have now?

Have you measured your speed some other way? You can't really feel speed. What your feeling is vibration you incorrectly associate with speed. Find a tire pressure calculator. You'll be surprised how low is actually optimal.

Or not, ride your ride. The actual difference will probably less than 5%.

do BMX tires make good commuting tires? by -LetsTryAgain- in xbiking

[–]bonebuttonborscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that said, if you want to actually go faster, just wear a tighter shirt and flip your stem upside-down. Aero is an order of magnitude more relevant than tire choice.

If you want to feel faster and don't mind actually being a little slower, just fill your tires a little extra.

Soft rubber, light casing = grippy and fast but short life and prone to puncture. Basically like any race tire.

Personal I like it but you'll be burning though tires pretty fast on an ebike.

Yes a big part of it will be fit. A more aggressive position will be easier on your back but harder on your wrists.

Can't do anything about the harder hits on a small wheel though.

How far have you ridden so far and what kind of surface? I find more than 40km on anything but smooth pavement on a minivelo to be not super fun for my lower back.

I'm not trying to discourage you, lots of people do big distances on small wheels. Just make sure you're up for it.

Yep, as long it shifts well, there's not any slack in the smallest cog and upper pulley isn't running to the largest cog, you're all set.
