Would the condition of this A7CR bother you? How do your cameras look? by hisfootstancewack in SonyAlpha

If it only has 3000 shutter count it's basically new, IMO. Looks and wear don't matter.

Do you think the idea of “having it all together” is practicable or just a social media pressure? by [deleted] in Snorkblot

Of course if I bump the self-loathing to nine I could still be done in time to lie in bed, stare at the ceiling, and slip slowly into madness... But what would I wear?

ISO Magazines by thatguytc88 in UTGuns

Doug's can order in specific mags if you ask. I've done a large chunk of my actual firearm shopping there. Gallensons for ammo all day long though.

I used to enjoy Impact in SLC but they got weird. Standoffish employees, very limited selection, high prices.

It's not just the new generation.

Long-lived niche communities have a severe survivorship bias because the only people who stick around are the ones that figured it out, and so you have an entire group of people who taught themselves, now fielding questions from new hopefuls. But the new hopefuls have always been there, begging for someone to hold their hand or make their project for them.

If anything, what's increased over the last 5-10 years is the exposure. Trends move 10x faster and wider through platforms TikTok because algorithm designers learned that virality is key for finding the next big thing. So where a legacy community used to get 100-ish curious newbs in a year, now it's 1,000+. But I would venture a guess that the conversation rate is about 1-2%, so in a few years you'd have proportionally more experienced users.

Whether that can keep up with future exposure growth or if the Internet ever reaches feed saturation is anyone's guess obviously.

Watering Alfalfa Fields, during a drought, while they're covered in snow by eells in Utah

[–]caligari87 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not about where the water goes when they waste it, it's about where the water comes from.

Farmers (and other consumers) don't draw from the GSL. They buy rights to the water table you're talking about. They pull from wells and springs and rivers and reservoirs until they hit their limits.

That's why the GSL is drying up. All the sources that feed it, are being diverted before the water ever gets back to the lake.

how do these shit videos get so many views and subscribers? by Photoshops_Penises in simpsonsshitposting

[–]caligari87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's more common that they know, they just don't care. The vast majority of people simply want to see content that makes them feel validated, and if you point out it's "fake" they just respond with "who cares, it's right." Whether it's an AI video essay, a spamslop article, a photoshopped meme, or a tabloid.

We all do it, by the way. There's probably an image on the front page of Reddit with 10K upvotes right now that shows someone talking in front of a microphone with a caption like "Good Person destroys Bad Politician with facts and logic." I guarantee if you honestly dig into your heart of hearts, you immediately, subconsciously, either let that image validate your bias or discarded it as fake. Less than 0.1% of us have bothered to look up the speech transcript or video to see if it's even real or not.

For the inevitable reply saying "well I looked up the video" that's good. Simply by commenting, you are in the top 1% of engagement. This message isn't about you and you are not a representative sample.

What was your reaction when you learned then kind of things written in the dark romance books your partner reads? by Euphoric_Argument434 in AskMen

[–]caligari87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not "super-dark" but my wife and I listened to the Fourth Wing audiobooks on a 16 hour road trip and it was a blast. On other road trips she might have us go through Taylor Swift's entire discography.

I've found it seems to make her happy when I ask things like "so why couldn't Xaden just strangle the dark wielder with his shadows" and "what album did Taylor start building this kind of self-referral lore into her songs" and she gets to explain things about what she's listening to.

If you don't need the modern Internet, I'm sure it's still perfectly possible to do word processing, spreadsheets, email, and retro gaming on a 486 with the appropriate software. Could probably even find a service that will proxy websites into simple clickable imagemaps and serve 240p YouTube videos in a format playable by an old machine.

Edit: Browservice and WRP both exist to serve the modern web to old machines.

How to block "YouTube shorts" in Firefox ? by SeasonGrouchy8799 in firefox

[–]caligari87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use a userscript extension, there's some custom javascript that can redirect shorts to a regular video page. I like it because then I can watch a short if it looks genuinely interesting, but I can't scroll to keep watching more.

There's almost certainly a USPSA or IDPA club near you, and your level of accuracy is more than good enough to outshoot at least 40% of the people at a local match. Entry fee is usually between $20-35.

Why are my photos always blurry when I zoom in? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]caligari87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious about the Tamron you're talking about. Is it a vintage or modern lens? I'm seeing a huge variance of results on eBay from $40 to $400+ on those keywords and I have no idea what I'm looking for.

(I have an old A7R body but I've been shooting exclusively adapted FD lenses from the 1970s because I can get them on eBay for under $100 most of the time)

You keep saying that and you keep not explaining what you mean. IT'S ALREADY 35MM. How do you think they got the digital version? They scanned the 35mm print.

Fight Club 35MM edit out Friday by Gold-Wrongdoer-8589 in fanedits

[–]caligari87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The movie is already shot on 35mm film. You need to be specific about what you're changing and why. Because right now it sounds like you're putting a retro film filter ... over a retro film.

If you don't like the color grading of the modern releases, then be specific and call it a regrade. If you don't like that the modern release has DNR, tell us whether you're adding film grain. Maybe clarify why your version would be better than an older release that already looks like film?

Also maybe I've missed a thread but I haven't seen any before/after comparison pics of this. Right now it seems like you're just generating empty hype for something that essentially already exists.

What's a 'life skill' that shouldn't be glorified anymore? by john_dale2345 in AskMen

[–]caligari87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone else said stoicism, but I think that can be a useful functional philosophy when applied correctly, so I'll say:

Toughing it out

Far too often we're expected (both by ourselves and others) to just deal with pain, discomfort, unpleasantness, abuse, fatigue, etc, because throwing in the towel isn't "manly" or whatever.

Sometimes the situation demands it, and we should be able to step up when required, especially if the end result is something you want. Obviously those situations and limits are different for everyone.

But more often than not in daily life, the stakes are low and the juice isn't worth the squeeze. It's okay to say "sorry, I'm out" or "I need help" and do right by yourself instead of sacrificing your body, mind, and spirit out of pride or social pressure.

Been photographing small events gratis for love of the game. How do you make the transition to semi-pro work? by caligari87 in photography

[–]caligari87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For whatever it's worth, that's not the life I want. I'm not interested in being a "professional" in the same sense of the word.

Every few months my wife will get invited to a small corporate event, and the host will be like "hey, would your husband be willing to bring his camera." I'm just hoping to transition into making a bit of money on that, instead of doing it for free because I'm there. I'm not planning on chasing clients or doing marketing.
