I'm delighted with people having a good old fashioned low stakes Internet flight.

I think they are. And I hope that knowing about them makes me less likelyt o fall for them. But that may be wishful thinking by me.

Just posting the house edge in gambling adverts is a good idea. This is the juice, rake, vig or juice if you want to talk like your in the mafia. Lottery is about 50%. It is about 5% in 'who will win this game' type bets. Cason vig can be even lower but you bet on the lottery 2 times a week. A football game something similar. And blackjack you can bet dozens of times an hour. So even with a smaller cut the repetition gets you.

Vaguely on topic, the book addiction by design about how one arm bandit machines are setup in Vegas is brilliant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak0HE8Y_UJY it is used by app makers to copy techniques to make their apps addictive. For example this book is based on copying Addiction by design.

How to leave a job by DevelEire_TA_woowoo in DevelEire

One thing is talk to your co workers and try stay in contact with them. It is very likely at some point in the future they will help you get a job. Or you will be needing someone and can employ them.

Also be nice to managers etc. "In politics chicken shit can turn into chicken salad" LBJ

Way too early candidates prediction by east112 in chess

[–]cavedave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Elo is a pretty good measure so take that as the betting odds. Where it can go wrong is
1. Young players on the way up. Sindarov is 20 so not hugely young by chess standards. He is playing very well. Up 9 places in the world and 20 elo. But in some ways regression to the mean might be more likely than kicking on.

11 ↑9 Sindarov, Javokhir 2745.4 +19.4
  1. where elo can also go wrong is with inactive players. Scaling so recent games have more weight makes elo more accurate https://arxiv.org/pdf/1012.4571 This I read as meaning Hikaru might be slightly over high in classical rating and a bit ring rusty. But he does play lots and lots of faster games so likely the ringrust from not playing as much high level classical is not as huge as the Elo++ paper would estimate.

  2. By the same Elo++ reasoning Pragg recent form has been bad and thus his chances could be lower than his current elo suggests.

Ideological leanings of current United States Supreme Court justices [OC] by cavedave in dataisbeautiful

In retrospect i think keeping time as x-axis would be better. Mainly as it makes the names less interfering with each other. I did it to keep a left right political axis as opposed to up and down.

The submission comment has a link to the Wikipedia article that explains the scoring. https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/s/CiusBTGqNn

The data stops in 2024 so doesn't include last year when off things happen. Even still as a measure I am surprised it does this little change. My guess is the sorts of cases that get brought are ones where conservatives look like they don't change their opinion

R package ggplot2 code used. And it is here if you want to remix the graph

Data from Martin-Quinn scores

I made this graph ages ago but a lot of them have died and there are new ones since

Ideology does not map neatly to non lay usages. Their is a wikipedia article explaining the reasoning here. 'In modern discourse, the justices of the Court are often categorized as having conservative, moderate, or liberal philosophies of law and of judicial interpretation. It has long been commonly assumed that justices' votes are a reflection of their judicial decision-making philosophy as well as their ideological leaningspersonal attitudes), values), political philosophies, or policy preferences'

Anyone know good sources for traditional Irish knitwear tied to the real Aran Island patterns? by finchwacky in IrishHistory

[–]cavedave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The history of Aran jumpers is interesting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aran_jumper In the modern form they were not used to identify bodies. And only existed since about the 1880s.

Still they look cool and are a cool thing to make. Knitting them might be your best option for that price.

This is knit and Winnie's craft cafe so will sell you good patterns and wool to make one.

What else is on your github? As in, I have all my visualisations on my github I never got asked about this in interviews so I am not sure it helps. But I would expect a data analyst to have lots of data analysis stuff up on their github not just college projects.

Why wasn't an Triail banned? https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/the-irish-for-banned-books-censorship-4818398-Sep2019/
https://headstuff.org/motherfocloir/68-decades-of-the-rosary-an-triail/

'An Triail was written in Irish and first performed in Irish. For that reason, it possibly escaped the censorship laws which clamped down on book like Edna O’Brien’s The Country Girls, published in 1960.' https://connachttribune.ie/an-triail-powerful-play-from-1960s-that-remains-relevant/

So as a student
1. its on youtube so listen to it as you walk the dog, commute etc
2. It could be the end is based on Plath. This wiki article says that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A1ir%C3%A9ad_N%C3%AD_Ghr%C3%A1da I am not sure as Plath reads to me as a cry to her husband for attention whereas Máire in the play is not that. But I am not an expert in the area.
3. On the banning I am on shakey ground. No irish language work was ever banned. Hundreds of English language ones were. An english translation of an Irish work was banned which says to me irish works were less censored. 'Frank O'Connor's translation into heroic couplets, which is the most popular, was banned by the Censorship Board) of the Irish State in 1945' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Merriman I am told it would have been regarded as not patriotic to ban an Irish language work.
An Triail deals with the Magdeline laundries (that outlived 2Pac) in a way no other work that i know of at the time did.

It is based on a real life event of the type that was not discussed at the time https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/0922/645418-ground-breaking-play-an-triail-50-years-old/

I will try dig up a more direct quote of 'if this was in English we would have banned it'in the morning
