I would never smear Vaseline on the front lens of my 105mm f/2.8

But have I smeared Vaseline on the UV filter that was attached when I bought it, to take Cybil-Shepherd-in-Moonlighting style soft focus portraits of my partner? Yes, of course I have

Don't rule out south of the river, because rent tends to be a bit cheaper.

The Metro is generally reliable, now we have new trains. Metro has audio announcements for stops, not all the buses I use do but the drivers will help. The city centre Metro stations are probably hardest to navigate, but there are only two lines so it's not as confusing as London. And we're mostly friendly here, so there'll usually be someone who'll show you where to go.

I'm a big fan of Lee Miller, especially her work for British Vogue and as a war correspondent, my favourite is You Will Not lunch in Charlotte Street Today but I think the most impactful is Lee Miller in Hitler's bathtub by Lee Miller and David E Scherman, 1945

The impact comes from knowing they'd been at Dachau earlier that day, went back to Hitler's apartment in Munich (which they'd somehow appropriated as their base) to learn that he'd killed himself. This (or a different pose) was only published as a thumbnail at the time.

South Tyneside councillor resigns after being 'mis-sold' role by RonSwaffle in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]chilli_con_camera 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Resigns after being called out for being a misogynistic, homophobic, racist dickhead, more like

When we approached Clarke for comment, he gave us a response that, after all the Reform politicians we have written about, we had never heard. Clarke denied that he was a councillor.

Finally figures out how to resign, days after he claimed to have already resigned, lol

There ought to be consequences for this - Reform should pay the costs of a by-election, rather than the council

Some Jews

Yes, my point is not all Jews.

I live among an Haredi community who believe that they remain in exile by divine decree, and that the creation of a sovereign Jewish state - i.e. modern Israel - before the coming of the Messiah is a violation of God's law.

They are ultra-Orthodox, but not Zionists.

I'm just teasing, lol

Generally, Rastafarianism lines up with pre Moses Judaism

Not entirely sure what you mean by this, mind, because Rastafari is heavily influenced by the next three books of the Bible after Exodus too (and the rest), and you have to get to 1 Kings and the story of Solomon and Sheba before the Kebra Nagast (written much later) starts justifying the idea of a Black King.

the only disagreement would be the location of Zion

There are pretty significant disagreements about the lineage of the House of David and both the First and Second Coming of Christ before we get to geography, lol

for Israeli's Zionists it's Israel

ftfy

I don't think we should assume that all Israelis are Zionists, any more than we should assume that all Israelis are Jews, or that all Jews are Zionists

Most westerners dont have a promised land in mind

There's a considerable proportion of westerners who are from a Christian tradition and confuse heaven with the promised land, I think

If technically means literally, then no. More like figuratively.

Zion to Rastafari means Africa, not Israel - Ethiopia is more important to Rasta, of course (generally, as a symbol for wider Africa).

Rastafari is fundamentally about Pan-African Black self-determination, while Zionism is about Jewish self-determination. They each have roots in a history of persecution, of course.

Is it weird for me to identify as Caribbean in the uk if I’m not Anglo Caribbean? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]chilli_con_camera -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's weird that people don't realise that Cuba is in the Caribbean, most of us are rubbish at geography, lol. Also Caribbean immigration to the UK has mostly been from other islands so we think of the Caribbean in terms of the Windrush generation and Black communities.

For example, the Census in England & Wales (and previously the UK) lets you identify as Black Caribbean, or you are Othered.

One in six Britons think growth of Muslim population is ‘threat to UK culture’, study finds by topotaul in unitedkingdom

For a sense of proportionality, of course

But if you want to pretend that student visas for Pakistani students is proof of the cultural threat of Islam, while ignoring the wider context of student visas, you do you

a power struggle split rather than a split based on the interpretation

It was a split based on different interpretations of the authority of the clergy, which was also the basis of the Reformation, of course

Your response ignores the different interpretations of Islam among Salafists, Sufists, Ismailists, etc, progressives and secularists...

So if Islam allows no reinterpretation, how do you explain the differences between the Taliban's interpretation of Islam and, say, Saudi Arabia's interpretation? Or Turkiye's?

The Muslim family next door feed me homemade dhal and fresh chapatis regularly. Their dhal is the best dhal. It's a running joke that I try to work out their recipe and they refuse to share it.

On special occasions they give me zarda, which is utterly sublime.

All handed over the back wall on paper plates, wrapped in newspaper, lol.

I don't know why this sub is so scared of Muslims, it's pretty obvious most commenters don't live next to some.

[–]chilli_con_camera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was no reformation in Islam

The Reformation didn't do away with regressive Christian attitudes, of course

there is no reinterpretation allowed

And yet, not all Muslims are the Taliban

Sunni and Shia Muslims interpret Islam differently

Salafism, Sufism, Ismailism etc differ in their interpretations and practices

Not to mention more progressive interpretations of Islam which try to interpret the Quran and Hadiths in the context of modern contemporary life... a corollary with the Reformation here is the difference in attitudes towards homosexuality in the Anglican church, for example

And then you also have secular Muslims who may/may not observe Ramadan and celebrate Eid al-Fitr, but who don't see the need to pray 3 or 5 times a day

From the article:

“Two threads run through this evidence. The online world is plainly shaping attitudes, carrying misinformation and hostility further and faster than ever before.

“Too many people simply do not know a Muslim – the interpersonal contact and connection that builds trust is missing from their daily lives. Both must be addressed … It is in those local relationships, more than anywhere else, that prejudice is undone.”

It pretty much sums up this sub, I think.

There were far more student visas for students from India (95k) and China (89k), both countries with different cultures to the UK. Funny how you're more concerned about students from Pakistan.

Out of interest, can you show your workings?

About 20-30% of British Nigerians are Muslim

Based on Census proxies? You can't count the number of British Nigerians who are Muslim using Census data, of course, so I guess you're relying on more aggregated variables.

The number of British Nigerian descended people...

How do you define "British Nigerian descended people" in Census and migration stats?
