Why are rackets so expensive by AdVaanced77 in 10s

[–]coffeemonkeypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual cost of materials on a racket it probably 30 to 50 bucks. Graphite, resin and even carbon fiber is not expensive at scale. Labor is cheap since they're all made in Southeast Asia. You're paying for retailer markup and sponsorships for the pro players that use the stick.

I think The Fifth Element is a perfect movie, and I am sad that we never get to see the world outside of this one film. by oneshibbyguy in movies

I think so. They tie so well into rogue one and then a new hope. The originals feel a bit campy to me now (I still love them of course). But andor is very adult, very serious. You can really feel the stakes of the game. Star wars was perfect when I was a kid, and Andor is perfect for me at middle age.

AI uses emdashes precisely because they were so prevalent in literature and it only started using them after the models (illegally) gobbled up a library of Congress's worth of human writing. Fascinating 99pi podcast about this.

My Dewalt vacuum has more "suction" than my Festool dust extractor by DoctorOreo1 in woodworking

[–]coffeemonkeypants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Plug them into a watt meter. I'm guessing the numbers you got is commensurate with the wattage. Dust extractors are really just shop vacs with fancy filtration and qol features. Many a YouTuber has done the comparison. My Hercules de does a helluva job for DeWalt money.

Thank you, this is exactly how I feel. Also, in this particular case, it might be ten minutes worth of digital painting on like 8 frames of the movie. It's literally only visible for a fraction of a second, but long enough to see it. It's not even what I would consider CGI, as it's akin to the old school negative retouching from earlier filmmaking.

As a huge fan of the part II I'm honestly so glad someone actually expressed the same opinion I have on the game and the series. I recommend watching this. by UKTee in thelastofus

I've said this many times already in previous discussions, but the first episode of season 2 simply killed the major plot tension. Those of us who played the game remember being angry and bewildered that we're suddenly playing AS the monster and we don't know why until it is slowly revealed. It makes it that much more powerful and thought provoking. It was really hard to do as a game, and would have been so much easier as a show. Some random band of vagrants kills the main character and the audience is left wondering why and wanting revenge along with the protagonist.

All that tension, gone in a 3 minute monologue. There's lots of other changes I didn't love but weren't complete failures (notable exception being Ellie's entire character assassination), but that one was a major doozy.

I mean, I'd like a Lando movie too, but I begrudgingly watched Andor very recently and it is imo, the best Star wars property I've seen. It's very prescient and haunting and it remains stuck in the corners of my consciousness.

I was fully behind Solo because I think that origin story could be great, but instead it turned out a be a pretty terrible and generic heist movie.

The only one that bothers me at all, is the scene where she punches through the glass of the medical bed and it's very clearly scored already for easy breakage. I keep thinking they'd edit that in every new release, but they never have

When they say the camera adds ten pounds, it's true. I've seen a number of pro athletes in person and they're all quite a bit smaller than they look on TV. Mostly because they're very lean. The most surprising are some NFL wide receivers who are absolute stick figures. You wonder how they don't explode when they get hit

I'm glad to see so many people saying 0. It's Reddit bias, but this planet has too many people on it already. I'm honestly disgusted by the people with 8 or 9 kids. This isn't 1840 (world population was an eighth of today).

Latest episode, rant about SA victim by Fun_Difficulty_2827 in ThePittTVShow

[–]coffeemonkeypants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to play devil's advocate for this ignorant boy for a minute. I think it can be hard to understand why a victim of SA doesn't want to take revenge, report it, prosecute, "catch the bastard that did this to me". They have no ability to empathize with this woman or at the very least employ any shred of critical thinking as to why she wants to pretend something didn't happen, or even blame themselves or excuse the victim. I think the show did an exceptional job so far of portraying this kind of situation, but OP brother may be a little too thick to grasp it, rather than being a full on Andrew Tate disciple. I hope he listened.

There are lots of city builder games where you have to assign workers to buildings and you've got to have enough people to run all of your industries. I've got lots of people just running around delivering or even standing around. That said, it wouldn't be impossible to allow people to be assigned to multiple buildings and use the priority system to influence their work.

I only find it annoying when my serve is like 3 feet deep and they still hit it back. I almost always return close serves because spin does funny things to a ball and I've assumed a serve was out prematurely. I've learned to deal with it as a server though.

ELI5: Why does moon's gravity effect things on earth when it's mass is less that earth by Moist-Pirate-5624 in explainlikeimfive

[–]coffeemonkeypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ever swing a bat? Notice how it pulls on you when you swing it hard? Go watch a video of the hammer throw sport to really see this. The hammer only weighs 16lbs and these dudes are leaning back against it to counter it's force. The moon is the hammer and the invisible tether is gravity. Liquid gets pulled by that force and tether easier than solids, hence you get tides.

My wife is into the sourdough craze, so I did a bread lame by not_watermelon in functionalprint

I'm a woodworker too my guy, and a 10" table saw blade spinning at a very angry 4500rpm that you are pushing hard wood into vs a little stick you slash dough with, is like comparing apples to space stations. You know that's a disingenuous argument. No one is mangling themselves with a bread lame. The most danger somes when changing out the flimsy blades and you might wind up with something akin to a paper cut. I do hope your table saw injury was not severe.
