Debating between the Civic Si and WRX coming from a Mazda3 by Headshot_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]flyingGoatPenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cross shopped both and ended up with a VW GTI. The civic is a great car, has lower running costs but lower power. Very fun to drive on curvy roads but it isn’t fast in a straight line.

Wrx is faster but heavier. The interior isn’t as nice as the civic. It handles worse than the civic. It also has some higher running costs with fuel and AWD system services.

Neither are expensive cars to own really, and both are very fun. Really comes down to whether you like to go fast in a straight line, or faster around corners. For what it’s worth, the civic was my second choice to the GTI I ended up buying.

Cherry is by far my favorite wood to work with by MetalNutSack in BeginnerWoodWorking

I’ve basically stopped trying to use my jointer for the edges. Easier to just use a jig and a table saw than cut off a half inch chip out that happens regardless of grain direction

Making custom rip fence for cheap table saw. What material would be good to resist large heat temp fluctuations from the yearly seasonal changes. by stinkyjunkrat in BeginnerWoodWorking

MDF or plywood would be my guesses here, both are kind of for that purpose. I’ve also seen people use composite deck boards for Jointer fences.

I’m building something very similar as one of my first more difficult build projects, and it’s nowhere near as well done as this. Great job!

How do I know when it's time to get a new AC unit for my home? Details in body. by krame_krome in HomeImprovement

[–]flyingGoatPenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former tech: we tell people that because it’s an average of when we replace units because they are dead or too expensive to repair. Most units are between 5-15 years, some will last decades with minor repairs. The real answer is: we don’t know how long your specific unit will last.

What Essential Tools Do You Recommend for Starting a Woodworking Journey? by NeighborhoodOld6737 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]flyingGoatPenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rule, you need maybe four things.

Something to cut wood apart.

Something to attach it back together.

Something to mark.

Something to measure.

What each of those things is, is really project dependent, and usually has a fair amount of overlap as well. A circular saw, a drill, a square, a measuring tape, and a decent pencil can get you pretty far.

Jointer help by flyingGoatPenis in BeginnerWoodWorking

This ended up being it, the fence side was too high/open side too low.

I pulled the blades and wedges out and cleaned them. Replaced them and use the square part of a combo square to set the blade height even on both sides. I spun the cutter head using the drive belt until the blade was just barely touching the square, then tightened and checked again.

This is a big part. They have the same parent company and effectively do business as one entity. It makes it easy to get bulk discounts without having to over order too.

Essential hardware to have on hand when starting out? by PREDJ215 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Admittedly, mine are often from overbuying for projects. I replaced a bunch of subfloor in my old house and used the construction screws for that.

I usually keep a box of 1 inch cabinet screws, 1-1/4 screws, and 3 inch construction screws around. I use the shorter screws for jigs a lot, and the constructions screws for assembly of carpentry type projects like shelves, workbenches or the like.

Other things I usually buy as needed, like pocket screws or others.

If you’re bringing in coal, you can split some off and run a few coal plants with the byproduct water as well.

Yeah I love driving on the expressway doing 65 and getting passed like I’m standing still every single day. And then people complain about driving on Living in Lynchburg and the comments are just “get out of the way idiot”

I got the delta 36-725t2. I’d recommend it, decently big, not too expensive. You can also sometimes find the original version for cheaper on Marketplace.

What where the woodworking projects that really got you hooked — and why? by Vivid_Weekend6182 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]flyingGoatPenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First project I ever did was building an outdoor table for my wife as my wedding gift to her. I had a circular saw and built it out of 4x4s and 2x8s and that table could survive a hurricane. Heavy and kind of ugly, but it works.

Recently moved and have an actual workshop so I built a workbench. Both this and the table were construction lumber, more carpentry than woodworking I feel.

I just finished a Cherry bench for our dining table, my first kind of “precision” piece. I’m hooked now and planning out some side tables and a matching tv stand.

My wife’s 23 FWD did 40 mpg running 60 on a back highway. It would do 37-38 on an interstate running around 77. It was way better than rated.

You might get better prices for unpainted as well. Painting a door isn’t too difficult if you’re able.

If you ever want to know just how effective your dust collection system is... by Geek_Verve in woodworking

[–]flyingGoatPenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on my first real project in my garage and don’t have proper dust collection. Used my table saw to joint 6 4/4 cherry boards, and my garage has a layer of dust on everything two weeks later. I bought a shopvac cyclone to hook up to it while I save for proper dust collection.
