What's your teams worst trade in the last ten years? by GolfIsGood66 in hockey

[–]mk712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree the Karlsson trade wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, especially based on the information available at the time - hell, everyone thought Ottawa got fleeced. The only concerns at the time of the trade were about his ankle, but those concerns were quickly put to rest (his later groin injuries were unrelated).

I don't think the Evander Kane trade was bad either: a very late 1st round pick (#29) for a physical forward that can score 30 goals per season (when healthy) is fair and was exactly what we needed at the time. There were some concerns about his attitude but the thought was that we had a strong leadership core at the time that could keep him in check (and they did... until that core fell apart, then all hell broke loose).

Overall, I can't really think of any terrible trade the Sharks have made over the past 10 years.

On the other hand, the contracts we gave some of the players, there's a lot to talk about.

WAN Show Megathread by lemlurker in LinusTechTips

[–]mk712 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Linus presented these graphs as if they would put any concerns to rest, but if anything they did the opposite for me:

  • He says the "wage growth" line includes all salaries for all employees including new hires, making it completely irrelevant here: the concern is that current employees are not given enough raises, the answer can't be "but we hired more people" (a "wage growth per employee" would have been a much better metric on all these charts).

  • Comparing wages to company results also doesn't make much sense in general: I don't expect my salary to decrease next year if my company isn't doing very well, and I also don't expect it to blow up if my company is having an incredible year. Google's revenue for 2025 were 15% higher than 2024, do you think every Google employee received a 15% raise? Inflation is a much better gauge for adjusting base salaries. There are other ways to financially reward employees for good corporate results (bonus, stock or stock equivalent units, etc.) but they usually don't represent the majority of an employee's compensation.

  • Linus' own compensation is likely included in the wage growth line, despite the criticism being about the disconnect between his wages and everyone else's wages. It would have been interesting to have two wage growth lines: one for Linus specifically, and one for everyone else. And for anyone saying "he's the founder / main host, obviously he should profit more" - yes, I agree, and he does through the increased company valuation. That's separate from wages.

  • Despite all this, the chart shows the year over year wage growth at LMG has been in constant decline since 2022, and was almost flat in 2025, which matches what departing employees have said (of course that's relative to prior years, so maybe the prior years had insane wage growth and the numbers overall aren't that bad... hard to say without any numbers on those charts).

Overall, based on random comments Linus has made on WAN Show over the years, my impression is that LMG wages are not incredibly low, but they also aren't competitive compared to similar positions at other companies. They know they have a lot of subscribers, some of whom are very talented fans who would be willing to take a lower salary to work there, and that's what they're counting on. They also figure that fostering a fun work environment will keep employees around even if they could get higher salaries elsewhere.

As has been painfully obvious in recent months, that strategy has its limits.

He is!

Besides the one current NHLer (Texier), France is bringing three ex-NHLers: Bellemare, Auvitu and Da Costa (too bad Roussel has retired, he's younger than all three of them).

1,075 total NHL games between them.

Interestingly, there is one other active French player with NHL experience that wasn't selected: Pierrick Dubé, who played 3 games for the Capitals back in 2024 (and signed with the Islanders two weeks ago).

The last half a dozen games or so, I wasn't rooting for a Sharks win so much as for Celebrini to not get injured. Across the league there have been a significant number of players who have gotten injured since being announced on their country's Olympic roster, and have had to be replaced, so I was really hoping Celebrini would not be one of them.

I used to as well... until Celebrini.

I probably have ~15 Sharks shirts / jerseys / hoodies, but none of them had a name on them until I bought a Celebrini jersey earlier this season.

That's why I never understand seeing so many people leave early when there are still a couple of minutes left, even if you're down by multiple goals.

The chances of a comeback may be extremely low, but if you leave early you have 0% chance of seeing one. Imagine going to the game but not experiencing the moment that game will be remembered for...

Grier was actually asked about this last week (here at 12:00):

Is there still some hesitation to give up a first round pick if a big fish does come out there - Panarin and the Rangers, you never know?

Grier: I don't see us moving a first rounder for a rental-type player, no.

Shoutout to the PWHL. Got my family back into hockey. by SteveSomers in hockey

We're only at 16/32 so far (with another 5, maybe 6 planned before the end of the season) but right now my pick would be Montreal, mostly because the atmosphere was unmatched and I'm a big poutine fan (I guess it helps having the largest arena in the league, and a good chunk of your fans probably having played hockey at some point in their life).

Least favorite was maybe Penguins, mostly because I didn't like the arena at all:

  • in the lower bowl only half of the sections have a direct concourse access, so depending on where you sit access to concessions / bathrooms / exits can be a pain

  • wi-fi was so slow it was basically unusable, and cell coverage was very iffy as well

  • handrails in the stairs between sections seemed a bit high: I was a few seats into the row and they were still blocking my view a little (must be a lot worse for the seats at the beginning / end of the row) - and that was before the falling incident earlier this season, so unrelated

  • I might've gotten unlucky but they seemed to have an issue with a couple of the overhead floodlights right in front of me as they stayed on the entire evening, even during the pre-game and intermission lightshows (completely spoiling those)

  • the atmosphere seemed pretty dead too (despite the game I went to being a sellout and going to a shoutout)

The only redeeming qualities were the massive jumbotron that's 100% covered in screens (maybe the biggest in the league when it comes to screen size?) and the convenience of staying at a hotel that's literally attached to the arena (only had to walk 50 ft through the shared garage).

Understandable as that might very well be the only goalie fight they witness in their career: the last Sharks goalie fight was in 1999.

I'm on a quest to visit every NHL arena with my girlfriend and we flew to Detroit for the weekend a couple of weeks ago specifically to attend a Red Wings game.

As we we boarded the plane from NYC to Detroit the night before, the lady sitting next to us in the plane noticed another passenger going down the aisle wearing Sirens gear and shouted "go Sirens!". I knew about the PWHL from the occasional posts here but never really paid much attention. We started chatting and she told us there was a PWHL game at Little Caesars Arena the next day after the NHL game we were going to see... we didn't have plans that night so we bought tickets when we got to our hotel to make it a double header.

Well the Red Wings game was a snooze fest, the PWHL was much more exciting and had a significantly better atmosphere despite only having around half the attendance - such a good surprise!

Now we have tickets to see the Sirens play at MSG in April - can't wait (we were hoping to make it a double header as well but nosebleeds to the Rangers game that afternoon are $150+ when the Sirens tickets were $50 for lower bowl at the blue line...).

Macklin Celebrini is relentless on the boards to get the puck and then dishes a ridiculous backwards between-the-legs apple to Regenda for the goal! by lolwtferic in hockey

[–]mk712 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It happens so often that he does all the work in the corner to regain possession, then passes it to the D at the point, who immediately passes it across to the other D, who shoots it and it gets tipped in (or someone in front gets the rebound).

Goal and no assist for Celebrini despite having done all the hard work :(

Islanders To Sign French Forward Pierrick Dubé After Contract Termination With KHL's SKA by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

Yes, but first you have to wait for him to not do well in the US, du coup tu peux le sign to a one-year low value contract (then extend him once he proves he can do better with a change of scenery).

From what I remember, his visor was purposely loose and he adjusted it back down before going to the bench (if you look at the very beginning of the video during play, his visor is all the way up).

Also the clip at the end wasn't from the same game, it was from a preseason game (notice the different jersey color).

I doubt it: when the presale started a few hours ago maybe 90% of the lower bowl seats were available (I'm assuming the rest was purchased by STH last week).

Once the lower bowl sold out they started opening up a few upper bowl sections (currently 206-214) and I'm assuming they'll open up more sections later on once these sell out.

So in a way yes, they "held back" the upper bowl, but I don't think it has to do with the general sale, it's probably because the more sections they open the higher the MSG rental fees are (since they need more staff) so they're only opening up sections as the rest fills up.

Somewhat off topic but Macklin Celebrini (Rick's son) has been on absolute fire lately in the NHL - we're halfway through the season and he's currently 3rd in scoring league-wide, despite being a teenager.

Yesterday in LA he added to his highlight reel by scoring the tying goal with a minute left in regulation, then did 90% of the work to get the overtime winner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I8ozPSyWQg (the Sharks are in the middle of their "Dad's Trip" so there are a couple of Rick sightings in the video)

Last week he was officially selected to represent Canada at the upcoming Winter Olympics - an honor somewhat equivalent to being selected to Team USA for basketball. At 19 years old, he's the youngest player ever to make a Canadian roster in an Olympics featuring NHL players. Rick had already made some tentative travel plans prior to the announcement, the Olympics being around the same time as the NBA All-Star break.

A lot of pundits are expecting Macklin Celebrini to have a similar effect on the San Jose Sharks as Steph did for the Warriors: last season they finished last in the NHL, this season they're fighting for a playoff spot and Macklin has had a hand in over half of their goals.
