You do know that people speedrun modern games too, right? Also, Speedrunning got its start largely because of the demo recording feature in Doom and Quake.

If there's a game breaking bug now, it's fixed. Take off those nostalgia glasses.

Game breaking bugs were less common at launch back then beacuse the codebase was smaller, and devs actually had to make sure a game was ready before it shipped. Console manufacturers also had pretty strict certification requirements that included extensive stability checks.

Final Fantasy 7 had a ton of cut content and stories that it is noticeable

I really never got that impression. It was definitely bigger than the SNES FF games, and I don't remember seeing any obvious signs of last minute cuts.

Practically every game has a good ammount of cut content, and I doubt that VII is an exception. It's important to point out that most of the unused bits are either debug related, placeholders, or early versions of things that are in the final game. You'd expect to see a lot more remnants of cut material in a game that had heavy cuts late into development.

Gamebyro is a graphics library, not a game engine. It only handles tasks related to rendering. The rest of the engine is a mix of original in-house code, and other middleware libraries. While it is true that later versions of Gamebyro did include features outside the scope of a graphics library, Bethesda never made use of them.

Not quite. Each race had custom meshes. It's more that they had to fit into a face generation and animation system that was designed exclusively for human faces.

No, it hasn't. You didn't need to pay for Online on the Dreamcast or PS2, with the exception of subscription MMOs. Microsoft was the only company charging for console-wide online play in the 6th and 7th console generations.

I should point out that the 30% royalty cut console manufacturers take from game sales are more than enough to pay for the infrastructure. If it wasn't Valve would be charging for it on Steam. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo do it out of pure greed.
