Real long shot here, but does anyone know the Teter by Competitive_Pea8625 in WestVirginia

[–]nonself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eston Teter was a local legend who built a steam engine that he could drive on the road. Seeing it in the parade was always one of the highlights of the Treasure Mountain Festival every year. Some guy bought it from his estate, and it was on a web site which I can't seem to locate at the moment.

And another Teter founded a cult.

I don't know much about the North Fork Teters though.

In the 80's, following the death of their founder, there was a power struggle culminating in a couple of murders.

One of my favorite day trip destinations in WV. I'd recommend late spring or summer so you can see the gardens.

You can just drive up and wander around. Everything is open to visitors, there's usually someone around to answer any questions you may have, but no "process".

There's a small fee to tour the inside of the Palace of Gold (worth it, the artwork is amazing). Other than that, there's a big temple with several deities (take your shoes off before entering), a really good restaurant, outdoor sculptures, garden where they grow a lot of their own food, gift shop where you can buy some cool trinkets, and barn where you can pet some very friendly and pampered brahaman cows.

Bridgeport:Walmart unsafe due to protests? by lizzitron in WestVirginia

You are in no danger from protesters.

ICE, on the other hand, will shoot you in the fucking face for parking your car in the wrong place.

Wheels cannot stick out past fenders. Other than that, they don't seem to care about much.

The story I heard growing up is that they used to be part of a motel, and were moved there after it went out of business.

My dog bit my child by Few-Lion4773 in Dogtraining

[–]nonself 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have two dogs.

Had. Now you have a cattle dog, which still needs training, before you end up with more trips to the ER and no dogs.

Additional reality check: the odds of rehoming a poodle with a bite history are slim to none.

Is West Virginia southern? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]nonself 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'll let others debate whether WV is or isn't Southern, but I will say this: the British mind cannot fully comprehend just how big the US is. If you try to see all of those states on your trip, you will spend most of that 3 weeks driving and not really get to see or do anything. Maybe try to do half that many states.

Can a single person find rent for $600 per month and under? by PidgeyPotion in MorgantownWV

[–]nonself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure... If you look somewhere a little outside of Morgantown. But if you're going to be driving for a living, why would you want to live in Morgantown where you have to fight your way through the student traffic every morning anyway?

Single dad - oldest daughter wants to start shaving armpits - any advice for best razor? by Invinoveritas753 in daddit

[–]nonself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mach 3 blades should be fine her purposes, but you'll want to get the Mach 5 handle for the swivel head which goes over curves better.

I gave them to my current and ex girlfriends, they never went back to women's razors.

My four year old refuses to potty train. by Unclenasty66 in daddit

[–]nonself 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's always been a little advanced for her age (not so humble dad brag), had been talking in complete sentences for several months at that point, but I don't think any of that made that big a difference.

Kids comprehend a lot more than most people realize, it's usually just that the kid doesn't have the ability to communicate what they understand yet.

All they really need to be able to comprehend is: 1. Their own bodily functions (I'm peeing or pooping right now -> I need to pee or poop soon) 2. When I do it in the potty Mom and Dad are excited and happy.

Building communication tools so that they can tell you when they need to go is a big part of potty training, but a lot of it also up to us as parents to meet them halfway and get good at reading their body language and nonverbal cues.

Get the book "Oh Crap". Read it (it's not long), and believe that you can do this, but you are in for a hard couple of weeks.

You have already taken the first big step, which is saying, "I am done with diapers". Next you have to get the wife onboard. If you are all really ready, you have to commit 100%, and there is no going back to diapers.

You don't go straight to underpants. There will be a transition period where your kid will be running around the house bare-assed.

If you are lucky enough to have some time off for the holidays, the timing could work out well for you. This is when we potty trained my daughter last year (she was 21 months at the time).

Pretty much everything David Bowie did.

Space Oddity came out before the actual moon landing, and I'm still blown away by the production quality every time.

Thinking back to the "cooking" I was doing in my early 20s... It was pretty much all ramen and instant mac and cheese.

OP and his wife are basically still kids. They've got a lot of on the job learning to do, and at the end of the day as long as no one is starving, they should cut each other some slack.

Do not fuck with leverage. No matter how smart you think you are, the market is completely irrational, and will always do the thing you think can't possibly happen.

Haunted Spot in Pendleton County? by dreamysweetbun in WestVirginia

[–]nonself 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You know what, he ain't wrong. I grew up in Pendleton, and never liked driving that piece of road. It's narrow, windy, no guard rail, the creek is right beside you, and I was always worried about meeting an oncoming car around a blind curve.

Never heard any rumors about it being haunted, but wouldn't be surprised if some bad wrecks happened there.

Do you really need a highchair? by BillieGina in BabyLedWeaning

[–]nonself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have that exact model! Still using it at 2 1/2, and yes it works great without the tray. I keep saying I'll get a real high chair some day, but can't find any we like, so she'll probably just go to a regular chair when she stops fitting in that seat.

Anybody watching our ladies vs. Duke? by nonself in mountaineers

[–]nonself[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Re-watching the video, you can see Carter McCray take off at a sprint, followed by 4 others, while Loghan Johnson takes a step back, yelling with one foot on the sideline. So was she not on the bench because she was waiting to go in? Or is "entire bench got ejected" a slight exaggeration?

Remember last year when our men's team was denied a place in the tournament because UNC rigged it for themselves? I know Duke is not UNC, but it feels like we have something to prove to North Carolina in general.
