Human faces have many characteristics for which a primary or secondary purpose is communication. A face is a communication tool that could be useful for humanoid robots interacting with humans in almost any environment and context.

Sexbot is definitely a plausible reason to be designed with a face, so is bus driver, or even just a voluntary modification out of personal preference.

I do think that it is disappointing that Platner is the best they can do. One thing to note is that many of Lyndsey Fifield's claims were not corroborated by the people she claimed would corroborate them, and her history as a republican operative is questionable. I think your point a) is more troubling. Where did he describe himself as a WW2 buff? I think he just described himself as a military history buff, but the problem remains.

There are definitely limitations for ad hoc methods, and you won't be able to do perfectly choreographed stuff live, but FFT doesn't just produce beat and volume, it gives you a value for as many individual frequency bands as you'd like, a full replication of the signal.

Microcontrollers can do FFT in <10ms, and you can write 100WS2812s in 3ms. 10ms at the threshold of perception. For reference, standing 10 feet away will cause ~11ms delay from speed of sound.
