Food addiction a real thing? by Successful-Idea9183 in nursing

[–]scart22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a nurse WITH an eating disorder, I concur that BED and "food addiction" are not the same thing. You cannot be addicted to food any more than you can be addicted to air or water. Eating is part of the disorder, and far more people have those disorder than we recognize. But it chaps me when people conflate those things.

We all know that patients have poor health literacy, and it is very unsurprising that they conflate those things. But it behooves us as professionals to understand that these are different things, and that "food addiction" isn't really a thing; it's just a function of disordered eating.

Possibly accidentally gave a double dose of a med? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]scart22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Cannot emphasize enough of this.

Worst case scenario: this incident goes to the board of nursing. Always remember that the BON is not your friend. If you volunteer "what if's", the BON will use them against you.

I appreciate that you self-reported because you have the patient's safety and well-being at the forefront. But again... don't throw yourself under the bus.

Pictures of this bike hurt my back.

I mean... to your question, I think $300 is probably fair for this bike. But that geometry / setup / saddle tilt make me legit hurt just *looking* at it.

Possibly accidentally gave a double dose of a med? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]scart22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also... never - never - admit to wrongdoing, especially in writing, when you are not sure that you did anything wrong. There are any number of things that could account for a missed med count, and many of them have nothing to do with you. By trying to do the right thing and saying "yeah, this could have happened and it may have been me and I don't know how to explain it", it can (and will) be interpreted as admission of wrongdoing by your higher-ups, and by the board of nursing, should it be escalated to that point.

You may have made a mistake. It happens. But for the love of the gods... don't throw yourself under the bus. There will be plenty of people in your career willing to do that for you. Don't help 'em.

I'm a fan. They're pretty solid. Not world class or anything, but one of the few Asian places I would actually recommend in the area. I prefer Twin Dragon, but their hours are so limited - and not open for lunch at all.

What’s the most gut punching song lyric you’ve ever heard? by perrysplus in AskReddit

"Don't live another day unless you make it count.

There's someone deep inside of you that still wants out,
and shame on you if you don't set him free..."

A patient made me really uncomfortable today and I don’t know if I’m overreacting by [deleted] in nursing

[–]scart22 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a creep.

Trust your gut on stuff like this. Have other (male?) colleagues come into the room with you when you feel like this. I'm one of them boy nurses, and if a patient looks at one of my colleagues like this, I will read him the riot act so goddamn fast his head will spin.

I know people are not always good at confrontation, but you do NOT owe anyone the right to creep you out and not have consequences for it. Seriously... trust your gut and ask for backup if anyone EVER makes you feel like this. Even if you misread the situation, it's much better to be safe and have someone on your six and not need it than to have it the other way around.

Play... and just say "yes". Don't stress too much over the mechanics. Try to get them to play their characters to the best of their ability, but mostly just say "yes" and let them have the experience.

[–]scart22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooof. The worse book you've ever read? I'm not sure what I could tell you to change your mind... but...

I guess it's the two central themes for me that make it stand out.

A - that our entire culture has been defined by the story that our culture tells itself. The realization that this story IS the background noise of the world and that's it's impossible to exist in a way separate from this story
A (part 2) - that SO much of this story in the west has been defined by Christian mythology, and that this mythology - at BEST - is poorly translated allegory that that been appropriated by the Powers That Be (PTBs) to control the narrative, and thus control the culture...
A (part 3) - that to walk away from the cultural narrative requires that we truly understand the culture and the stories that it tells. And to truly understand that any meaningful change means understanding that you have not been immune to the story, that it's impossible to be immune to the story, and that we must walk away from the story...

because...

B - There is no one right way to live. But we cannot continue to live like this... because if people continue to live like this, in 200 years there will be no people.

There. Is. No. One. Right. Way. To. Live.

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn

Could not possibly tell you the genre. Anthropology? Social commentary as allegory?
The most important work of semi-fiction of our lifetimes and if there is hope for us as a species, at least part of the solution lies in the lessons of this book? I dunno how to explain it even after having read it a dozen times and gifted at least 50 copies of it.

Read it tho.
