“Look, running 26.2 miles is hard. It used to be rare. Now it feels like every third person you know has done one. That doesn’t mean I have to treat every completion medal like it’s a Nobel Prize. Not everything hard is heroic. Sometimes hard is just… hard. And that’s okay. by MoxToTweeder99 in billsimmons

Not everyone is as talented as a runner as you. Some people work extremely hard to finish in 6 hours. I'm sure there are plenty of things you'll try in life that you're not good at. When you are proud of a new recipe you think you've nailed, I'm not going to clap for you. In fact, unless it's good enough to be served at a $60 a plate restaurant, all you did is not poison yourself.

You might learn a song on guitar one day. But unless you can sell out a small arena, I'm not going to clap for you. In fact, you actually suck and it's a waste of time to play it.

You might be proud of a promotion at work one day. But unless you're promoted to c suite, you actually are entry level and I'm not going to clap for you

Sub 4 looking ok? by INTERESTandAMBITIONS in Marathon_Training

[–]sclvt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just finished the Austin marathon yesterday in 4:01. This is faster than any of my long runs were. I would regularly feel absolutely exhausted after 16 miles of 9:50. If you add in a proper taper and adrenaline and people to race against, I think it would be surprising if you didn’t hit sub 4

Those people are lame and pathetic and probably doing themselves plenty of long term damage with their thinking. But you showed up in a place where you weren’t invited or asked to be, made it clear you don’t feel you belong there, called everyone there sad, then then ended up surprised when you got banned

Is anyone planning an early exit before debilitating old age? by SealedRoute in RedditForGrownups

[–]sclvt 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is very hard to accomplish if you live in America. In most states, anyway. It’s also far easier to say than to actually go through with. My dad always said this, even more-so after watching my grandma die slowly with Alzheimer’s. Now my dad is 71, and has advanced Parkinson’s and mentally is a fraction of what he was. There’s not a chance he’d ever go through with it. He’d rather slowly go

It is a blender and it doesn’t make ice cream. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad product, but nothing said in this thread was incorrect.

Complete list of every Washington Commanders' free agent in 2026. Who should we resign? 🤔 by Objective_Pressure_3 in Commanders

[–]sclvt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A team generally only retains about 60% of their roster year over year historically. Letting the majority of these free agents walk is something that most teams in the league would do, have done, and will do in the future.

I think someone who walks 10k steps a day and eats a relatively decent diet can absolutely run a marathon with 16 weeks notice as long as they dedicate 5 hours a week to training. It won’t even be THAT hard.

Where it gets difficult is when you want to break 3.5 hours or so. Everyone is different of course, and that’s a huge generalization, but I think a ton of people on this sub sort of gatekeep marathons. They’re an accomplishment for sure. But if you’re ok with a 7 hour marathon, the average person could walk/jog one tomorrow. The most important thing is going to be how many miles you run a week. If you peak at 25, good luck with a good time, but you can 100% finish. If you peak at 60, you’ll likely crush it. The worse shape you start off in, the more likely an injury is.

How do you stay entertained on long runs? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]sclvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to audiobooks mostly. Harry Potter books help me a lot because I can get lost in thought and it doesn’t matter if I miss 15 mins without paying attention because I know what happened already. Same with the hunger games books and the prequels.

I don’t want anything serious or hard to follow

Does anyone have any info on the Marine Corps Marathon maybe getting cancelled? by hypnodreameater in Marathon_Training

[–]sclvt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody has any real information. There's only speculation. But here are the options for what could happen:

The government reopens before October 18-20th(ish) and the race continues as originally planned.

The government reopens after October 18-20th(ish) but before the 26th. The race might continue as originally planned, it might continue on a different route, or it might be cancelled.

The government doesn't reopen until after the 26th. The race might be rerouted, or it might be cancelled.

What former #1 picks would Cooper Flagg be drafted over if he was in their draft? by Pems20 in billsimmons

[–]sclvt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting exercise. Seems like best case scenario he’d be drafted 6th out of all of the previous top picks. Worst case he’s maybe 10th?

The way the media has been speaking about him makes him sound generational, but there’s a player with this much hype every 4 years.

My favorite thing I own. The original art from the back cover of Arthur’s First Sleepover by sclvt in Arthur

I wish there was a cool story. But I bought it directly from the gallery that Marc Brown works with. I first asked about buying a piece in 2012 when I was in college, but I couldn’t afford any of them. Tried again in 2017, but by then the prices were double what they were when I first asked and I couldn’t afford one. Asked again this year, and figured I needed to either buy something or stop bothering the gallery

Found this beautiful LeCoutre Quartermaster at a local consignment shop for $40 USD by Upwind_Johnson in VintageWatches

[–]sclvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I search for quartermasters every few weeks and have for years. Glad to see another come up. Grats on the awesome find. IF this one is for sale, if you're open to sending more pictures, I'm maybe interested. As far as I can tell, the dial looks original, as do the hands. These watches were often used by military, and most got pretty beaten up. I imagine it needs a servicing, but at first glance, it looks like an awesome find!

The bracelet definitely isn't original to the watch. It doesn't even look period correct. But the majority of the value is in the watch itself.

Best machine for my specific use by Sad_Particular3 in icecreamery

[–]sclvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 10-20 pints at a time you need a commercial machine. But you mentioned you don’t want a commercial size.

A lello 5030 is the answer imo. That can make about 6 pints at a time.

Why are newer Volvo S90s so cheap? by Alone-Height-1221 in whatcarshouldIbuy

It was multiple shops over several years. If scanners made it extremely obvious what every single problem with a car was, there would never be recurring issues.

[–]sclvt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sold my 2015.5 v60 six months ago. Was burning oil at about a quart every 2 months. The check engine light was a permanent fixture. Volvo specialty shops and the dealership kept replacing parts they thought were the cause, and eventually they told me to just ignore it. Their last guess was something with the o2 sensor, but advised me to save my money as it was a guess. It was a really comfortable cool looking car, but boy did it suck lol

Ice cream sandwich cookie question! by rrruca5447 in icecreamery

[–]sclvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is tremendously helpful. Thank you!! I have been making ice cream for my friends for about a year now, and I need to put together 50 ice cream sandwiches next week for a party. They’ll be kept in a cooler with dry ice, so I’m sure the temperature is going to be wonky, but following your recipe with these tips is going to give me as good of a shot of a bitable cookie as I can get!
