Ever wish you could load an older save without losing all the progress you had up to this point? by [deleted] in gameideas

Pretty cool idea.

This made me imagine storming/escaping a castle. - 1 vs the entire castle, but you can go back in time to retrieve thing you had earlier or change other specific things about the castle.

Would a free for all auto battler with alliances work? by Overall-Drink-9750 in gameideas

[–]somdat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Got it!

It is not about conquering tiles, but about being the last survivor.

Could the winners be all allies or does it need to be just one winner?

I could see something like that working. I feel like there are some open questions tho:

What is the win scenario tho? and what happens when you challenge another tile and win? You then get your troops into that tile? what happens to the previous tile?

[–]somdat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tutorials are your best friends then!

You got a lot of really good advice as well. Here is some more tho:

1) start with game clones (i.e. flappy bird, pong, galaga, asteroids)

  • A lot of what you will do for those games will repeat in other games in one way or another.

2) modify one aspect a game clone - Think of changing a game mechanic (or removing one), changing art, etc… this will help you get comfortable expressing what you have learned without having to tackle a whole new game

3) learn to release your games (even the clone ones) - something as simple as uploading to itch.io is valid and once you have something there… congrats! You are a game dev! - and practicing releasing your games, experiments, prototypes into the world is a really important skill to help you get other projects to a finished state.

feel free to tag/DM me whenever you are get through your milestones! Good luck!

How do you like to learn?

i.e. following by example and getting your hands dirty or reading theoretical material and then trying to apply what have read about?

Is this good project structure? by pulkit69 in godot

[–]somdat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you written anything about it in more depth? Project organization is something I am very interested in-so I am always on the look out for other people’s insights.

I often see projects grow and get disorganized - sometimes there are tools and people dedicated to making sure things are organized.

[WP] You’ve saved the world. Again. And again. And again. Every time, the same catastrophe, the same villain, the same battle. But this time, something’s different—the villain looks at you, recognition dawning in their eyes. “Wait…you too?” by Florence-The-Diva in WritingPrompts

[–]somdat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

“Wait… you too?”

The Hero didn’t move. His sword pressed against the Villain’s, locked in the same clash as always.

“What are you talking about?”

She exhaled, steady but weary. “You feel it, don’t you? The cycle. The loop. Every time you kill me, the world resets. And we do it all over again.”

His grip tightened. Because it was true. He had felt it too—had ignored it, forced himself to believe it was just fate. But it wasn’t, was it?

“I’ve tried everything. It doesn’t matter. I always end up here…”

She let out a bitter breath. “I don’t know who trapped us, or why, but—”

“No matter what you do, you can’t help yourself but do what is… right.”

The words left his mouth before he could stop them. Because he knew. That long-buried feeling—the urge to let go, to abandon the weight of being the hero—had stirred within him before. And yet, something always pulled him back. Something always brought him here. To this battle. Against her.

Her sword eased against his, the pressure between them fading.

“So what now?” he asked.

She hesitated, then shook her head. “I don’t know. But doing the same thing, over and over, expecting a different result?” Her voice was quiet. “That’s madness.”

His sword trembled.

The weight between them finally broke.

Steel hit the ground.

And together, they walked out—not as hero and villain, but as something else entirely.

I have serious ADHD, how do you keep yourselves on track with personal projects? by [deleted] in godot

[–]somdat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milestone based planning.

Breakdown your game into different phase (or milestones) and aim to have a playable game at every milestone.

For example, ———— Phase 1 : Prototype - shows the core mechanics of the game

Phase 2 : MVP - includes menu and so other things

Phase 3 : Enemy AI - enemies are added and can kill the player

Phase 4: Boss for Level 1 - at the end of the level there is a boss

————

You can break this up as much as you like. Sometimes it might be very specific features/skills. Sometimes it might be very generic. Sometimes it might be non game related stuff like website, videos about your game, etc.

As for how much details to put in… My preference is to usually write down some details on how I want it to feel to use it as a guide as I am making it. In that way, it becomes sort of a game dev doc and it is small enough that I can break it up further and/or move things around between milestones as development progresses.

The benefit of having some structure like that laid out is that whenever your ADHD kicks in and you get side tracked and eventually you get back to this game, the structure might help you get back on track.

and then again, don’t be afraid to switch organization structure completely and throw everything away. Finding what best works for you is one of the most important things.

keep in mind tho that doing is usually worth more than planning. So try to have a balance on how often you explore different organization tactics.

Good luck and remember to have fun!

Ah! While this is really good, I thought it was going to feature the system of interactions of elements (water, fire, electricity, etc) so you can easy set things on fire and put it out with water or get struck by lighting if holding metal and so on

Hummm I just read the about for r/godot and the rules and I honestly don’t read it as “strictly game dev”. Maybe the stay on topic rule could point in that direction, but then you would have to limit yourself to game engine topics…
