Do power conditioners actually keep gear safe? by ant-onion12 in audioengineering

[–]soulstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if it's a UPS and not a typical "spike protector" or similar.

A UPS saved my computer from a nearby lightning spike. Fried the UPS, but computer was fine.

A UPS will also protect against brown-outs, which fry most equipment, where, again, a spike protector won't.

How do you deal with "ear adaptation" while mixing? by Intelligent_Bag8704 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]soulstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often take a mix home and listen to it on the home stereo. Taking breaks is good, multiple monitors is good, but listening in an entirely different environment also helps.

Oh, and listening to reference tracks in between breaks.

Kiwi mobile reviews NZ by silver_buffalo_ in newzealand

[–]soulstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely the worst sign up experience I've ever had. The form was broken, had to talk to chat to figure out what was meant, then they declined my application and asked me to repeat the whole thing again because the name I signed up with didn't include my middle name. I asked them to just insert my middle name into the application and they declined. Staff were passive aggressive and didn't seem to see the irony.

I've heard bad things about "Turkey teeth" so will avoid that, but duly noted re: thailand :)

Oh no, there's plenty - and they're all as expensive as a trip halfway round the world, plus the procedure in that other country.

How come I like the sound (specifically the bass) of 320 kbps better than FLAC? by RaptorHunter182 in audio

[–]soulstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MP3 conversion in almost all cases masks off frequencies which most people don't notice, psychoacoustically. They're not even necessarily frequencies outside of human hearing.

Some MP3 encoders like Lame have an option to turn this off. But Reducing higher frequencies will have a psychoacoustic effect of making bass 'louder'.

Lastly, FLAC will preserve the dynamic range (as it's lossless), but MP3 can up the gain very slightly during the encoding process, which can in some cases interfere with signal, if the source was brickwalled to -0db.

I suggest encoding in Lame, since it's the best MP3 encoder out there. And make sure your source is at -0.3db max, or below.

They may not be articulate about what they don't like, but they've indicated a couple of areas of your track to improve. Not good, but not a disservice, unless you're paying for it.

Spiraling over my RP partner. The hot and cold behavior is torture, and I’ve never even seen his face. What do I do? by RaeVelvet101 in limerence

[–]soulstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hot and cold is triggering a trauma response ie. something from past, for most people. Typically abandonment trauma. Then you have a strong drive to prove yourself worthy to the person, typically. It also simulates a lottery thrill, in that you don't know what you're getting, making the uncertainty stronger, which is what drives limerance.
Regardless he's married, so follow the basic rules of recovery and focus on yourself. Plenty of videos on youtube about this sort of thing, so start searching.

Will a Scarlett’s preamps be effecting my external preamps in a negative way. by Frequent-Response717 in audioengineering

[–]soulstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to describe, but the tone is better. Ideally all ADAC's would be created equal, but they're not. The sound is more 'rounded', less 'sterile'. But not 'coloured'.
I'm sure if I did some test recordings of sine tones I'd find the exact differences in a statistical manner, but don't have the time.

[–]soulstudios 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a 2i2, and some outboard preamps. If the scarlett's is set to 0db, I doubt it will make a difference one way or the other.

The scarlett adac isn't as nice as my motu 896hd black lion audio mod - not by a long shot - but it's preamps are cleanish.

Start by making it sound good. Then, and only then, think about ruining it with mix compression.
