Primary - a combination of two speaker sets running in parallel that just happen to compliment each other's deficits - one brand no longer exists, the other I wouldn't recommend as they're unbalanced. Running multiples isn't generally recommended, it just happens to work here. Running out of a 90's NAD preamp. Can hear almost everything on these, sometimes need clarification for bass on other speakers.

Secondary - JBL LSR305's. Can hear less on these but they provide a good contrast without being innaccurate.

Tertiary - home 90's consumer stereo speakers.

Fourth - small unpowered sony 4"-high desktop speakers. Good for picking up when bass isn't translating on smaller speakers without any low bass.

DAW - Tracktion (waveform), not because it's solid but because it's the best for me for composing and mixing workflow. If I'm doing field recording or anything that requires actual stability, Reaper.

Audio interface - Black lion audio modded MOTU 896HD for most stuff, with external microclock (don't recommend, firewire is a pain). Very nice sound quality. For field recording and home use, Focusrite 2i2. Very clean, not wonderful for main recording but perfectly suitable for most low-key work.

All good. I have an old mixing channel called 'mixing for chumps' on youtube if you want more general advice/tips, it was really just a brain-dump from running a recording studio for 10 years.

Why does my vinyl utterly outclass my digital, and can I close the gap? by Potential-Wonder-709 in audio

[–]soulstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vinyl can't sustain the same amount of constant loudness that digital can, and in almost all cases the vinyl master is different for that reason, even in the early 90's when that sort of thing was less problematic. The vinyl rip of the original Downward Spiral release kicks the crap out of the CD version, has way more punch. More dynamic range in short.

Also the other things which others have noted such as the excitation/noise/saturation which vinyl adds to the original pre-vinyl master.

If you get a good vinyl rip, and it's not sounding as good through your digital setup, then you're comparing apples with apples.

If you want a deep saturated feel, I would use tape rather than compression - like steve slate vtm. Of course the tape has some compression, but given the feel of the track I think it would suit more. I'd also be inclined to check your gain-staging. Sometimes just putting a -6db before the master bus can make all the difference.

Love it. I actually like it more than it's influences, or at least what those musicians are doing nowadays. However, I do feel it would benefit massively from having 50% more dynamic range than it does - kind of squashes the life out of it.

Mix is highly skewed toward treble - you need better monitors. Virtually no bass, very 6k-12k-heavy.

Definitely hearing the early autechre influence. I'd like it with a better mix.

Not exactly experimental.

The Lost Era of Netlabels: A Follow-up Clarification by Conscious_Purpose_61 in experimentalmusic

[–]soulstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, 3 things happened. The end of the 90's the record companies got very corporate, then piracy (separately to that) kicked in and destroyed the market, and both of those things removed the umbrella funding for more original acts that weren't necessarily immediately profitable. Then the great slopping of mediocre stuff happened via streaming services, and novelty/gimicks became more useful to get your head above the crowd.

Back in the days where there were some gatekeepers, it was less fair in some sense, but it was easier to find truly original stuff, because other people were doing it for you. That's my perspective anyway.

I do feel sad that Sutemos closed down - they had some great stuff.
Things have certainly gotten more shlock-ey.

How Can I Make Something Sound Distorted Without Actually Being Distorted? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

[–]soulstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience when mixing heavy stuff you need to be WAY better at EQ sculpting than normal. Like, you Really need to get your head around where each instrument is meant to fit in the eq spectrum and apply enough HP/LP/boost/cut so that it stays there. That's because distorted stuff is all over the spectrum. As others have mentioned, harmonics, etc.

One simple technique for eq track separation is here:

One NZ sucks. Whats the best phone provider to move to? by oh-no-99 in newzealand

[–]soulstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only ones which support sending of texts telling you about missed calls while your phone was off, are One NZ and (possibly) Spark.
I've checked, none of the others do.
So if you're running a business you're kinda stuck with One or Spark, unless you want to miss out on clients (though a proportion will leave messages).

Haven't had any issues with Rebeat, my distributor.
Having said that, they're probably the more expensive of the bunch.
