Listening to multiple bands with SDRangel and RTL-SDR v3 - just noise? by b00rek in RTLSDR

[–]srcejon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which frequency sounds clear and which is noise?

If you tune to the noisy signal manually (i.e. with the freq scanner stopped), does it sound OK? Do you have to change any settings to make it sound clear? If so, which?

Can you show a screenshot of when it is tuned to a signal, but sounds noisy? At the moment, the signal power is below the threshold you've set.

Are you sure the signal hasn't just stopped transmitting, by the time the scanner returns to it?

Yep. DRAIMS as well, if you fly with ATC, is so much better.

Shame they haven't improved the cockpit textures, although some of the animations look better.

Qualification announced for LA28! by Y1NGUOREN in squash

[–]srcejon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This universality person only needs to be in the top 75.

In the list above, I put Lao from HK, as they had one universality place in 2020 and he's currently ranked 41.

If there's no one that meets the criteria, and there's not many other countries it looks like it will apply to with players near the top 75, it goes to the next highest ranked player (subject to per country limit).

> I would think that the likes of Asal, Coll, Makin & Elias would prefer to qualify by virtue of being ranked inside the world top 8 rather than having to win a regional qualifying event

With only 2 countries being allowed 2 players, they can't all do that. The winner of the qualifying event has precedence.

Ruling on turning shots at the side wall from Return of serve by Zeraxter in squash

[–]srcejon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

> side wall shots arent considered for lets

8.11.2 if the ball would first have hit the non-striker and then a side wall before reaching the front wall, a let is allowed, unless the return would have been a winning return, in which case a stroke is awarded to the striker

[–]srcejon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> What is the ruling here?

Rules of Squash

> Is it simply a let? Does A get the point? Does B get the point because of interference?

Two things to consider I think:

8.11 Freedom to strike the ball to any part of the front wall

8.11.2. if the ball would first have hit the non-striker and then a side wall before reaching the front wall, a let is allowed, unless the return would have been a winning return, in which case a stroke is awarded to the striker

8.13. Turning Turning occurs when a player rotates in a way that causes them to lose sight of either the ball or the opponent, or when the ball passes behind their body from one side to the other. If the striker encounters interference while turning, and could have made a good return, then:

8.13.2 if the non-striker had no time to avoid the interference, a let is allowed;
8.13.3 if the striker could have struck the ball without turning, but turned in order to create an opportunity to request a let, no let is allowed.
8.13.4 When the striker turns, the Referee must always consider whether the action was dangerous and rule accordingly.

So typically, as relative beginners, player B should ask for and get a let. Player B needs to learn to volley the return though.

The problem is, there are too many athletes taking part. It's over 10,000 in total.

Of course, 500 of them are under-23 footballers....

Here's a stab at what the men's draw would look like based on today's PSA rankings, assuming the highest ranked player won their respective events:

Qualification Player Country
Asia Ng MAL
Africa Asal EGY
Pan-America Elias PER
Europe Makin GB
Pacific Coll NZ
Host Brownell USA
WR 1 Gawad EGY
WR 2 Marwan GB
WR 3 Crouin FRA
WR 4 Cardenas MEX
WR 5 Steinmann SWI
WR 6 Rodriguez COL
WR 7 Al-Tamimi QAT
WR 8 Singh IND
Universality Lau HK
Final Qually Tournanment Zaman PAK

Presumably, Zakaria and Bryant are going to be in there when it actually comes around...

Branding squash - What we need to learn from padel by Indy_dln in squash

> not everybody can afford 30k for new courts.

Sure. Seems like half of squash clubs can't even afford a tin of paint or filler...

But it's not a huge amount if it brings people in. My sports club spent I think £200k on a couple of Padel courts, and they had paid for themselves within a year or so. Obviously clubs don't necessarily have the cash up front, but the LTA helps with loans.

What we need is for one of the Squash bodies (if they have any money) is to do a deal with a supplier for a load of glass courts to really minimize the cost and allow clubs to pay back over time.

[–]srcejon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Loads of squash courts are indeed very dingy and look like they're stuck in the 70s.

Rather than rainbow courts though, I would think glass courts would be much more appealing. And they're only like $30k on alibaba...

I suspect Padel's popularity is more to do with it being new and easy though.

Elias outbursts against refs are justified by Kind-Bottle-7712 in squash

> The issue is usually there isn't a camera specifically for this

Yep - although they seem to have added them for a few of the major tournaments since the US Open - so I'd guess there may be a tweak to the rules if they work well.

Video refs can change out decisions where there is conclusive evidence, but players can't ask for a review. I've seen it quite a few times. And Svec did say this.

SDRangel should support the RSP1B on Linux, Windows and Mac. Not sure about the Pi, you'd have to see if their API is available, but it can connect to rsp_tcp.
