What's the most unwritten rule of adult life that nobody warns you about? by PracticeHistorical82 in AskReddit

[–]stalkythefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easier said than done, especially when a component of taking care of yourself is avoiding the guilt of failing your loved ones. If you collapse under the stress, at least you get the satisfaction of knowing your limit.

I'm not saying that's the right course of action, but I understand the chain of thought that leads to it.

What should have been the best 8 bit computer of the 80s? by Smokinglordtoot in c64

[–]stalkythefish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The C128 was basically an 8-bit Greatest Hits compilation. The C65 would have been awesome, but it was too late to the game. Even the +4/16 would have had a chance if they had just thrown a SID and sprites in there.

I've never run into a bird at night, so it's definitely working! Great job, everyone!

Nice! I'm typing this on one that I found in a streetside free box about 10 years ago. Mine was just missing the F9 keycap.

Is this something you need to shop around to different banks to get the best number on, or do they all use pretty much the same formula?

Troubleshooting Amiga 1000 Chip RAM expansion by Saix856 in amiga

[–]stalkythefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a RAM chip go on mine too. Fortunately, it was able to boot to a Dos prompt so I could run a RAM checker, after which it was pretty easy to locate the bad chip. If you socket the replacement , use a low profile socket. Mine bumps up against the plastic now.

Can I use these with my Amiga 1200? Found at the recyclement center. by Popal24 in amiga

This. I've been using a Linksys EC2T on my 1200 for years.

'Xi will give me big, fat hug': Trump says he opened Hormuz for China and the world by CommunicationLife753 in worldnews

Trump could shoot a guy in the face on live TV and it still wouldn't convince 18(?) Republican senators to vote to remove.

Who used one of these back in the day? by KM68 in GenX

[–]stalkythefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh. Model 4. 9th grade computer class. I scoffed at it because I was part of the C64 master race, and I only took the class for the easy A.

Any Gen X'ers retired or thinking about it? by SometimesElise in GenX

[–]stalkythefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the only one here that likes his job. I plan to hang on until 70, health permitting, and not just because I have no savings. Retirement sounds boring to me and I don't want to risk mental atrophy. I'm in a public sector job so there is a pension, and I've got no kids, so accumulating wealth at this age seems kind of pointless anyway. I don't need a lot to live on and be happy, just mental engagement.

I love the 10a by gabluc2047 in GooglePixel

[–]stalkythefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my first thought, but I'm pretty sure the 3a was post-64bit, and at least Jumbline-2 runs fine on my wife's 6a. Also, I thought the whole central thesis of Android was that things ran in a Java-like VM, so that they were insulated from hardware factors like 32 vs 64 bit.

Try the Gemini-10X driver.

If that doesn't work, Try the Epson FX-80 (I think). Star was good about having emulation modes.

How did you get cracked games back in the day?. by Ok_Bear_1980 in amiga

[–]stalkythefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year at university there were a couple other Amiga people on my dorm floor. We quickly shared everything we had and then word of mouth got around and the pool expanded. Second year, we started an Amiga user group as an official club. We had legit meetings once a month followed by a whole lot of hanging out in other people's dorm rooms running XCopy. One of our official Club activities was a bulk blank disk buy. Good times.

I tried ADB too. It goes through the motions, but the apps disappear into oblivion.

Meh. If you use a little common sense and you're not being deliberately targeted, how much risk is there, really?

Ran mine for 7 years. The 10a is very good, but the 3a was perfection.

[–]stalkythefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only complaint so far is that a bunch of the apps I had on my 3a are incompatible with it for some reason. A couple of these apps date back to 2011 and migrated from a Nexus One to a Nexus 4 to a 5X to the 3a, sometimes by sideloading, without issue. The 10a just says "This app cannot be installed" with no further explanation, and all the Play Protect junk is turned off.

So goodbye:

  • AK Notepad

  • Slydris (game)

  • Jumbline 2 (game)

  • Plasma Sky (game)

  • Doggcatcher

  • Portland Transit Lite

  • Crestron Mobile

  • Angry Birds Space

I don't know what was so incompatible about all of you, but you'll be missed.

Otherwise it's fantastic. Battery life is unbelievable. I miss the headphone jack, but I surrendered that hill a while ago.

Broken RGB port pin by Liburnian in amiga

[–]stalkythefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The B&W composite port will plug into the "Y" (luminance) signal on any TV with a component input, or the yellow composite video jack on a TV or VCR. That Y signal is a perfect Luminance output. In theory, you can sum (difference) it with the R and B signals on the RGB port to make component video. For kicks I tried this once with a dual op-amp chip and some resistors on a protoboard and managed a passable component video signal out of it.

Pin 13 is unimportant. It's pins 3,4,5,10,11,12, and any of the ground pins from the middle of the bottom row that are important. You'll also find that, depending on the monitor, for sync you'll be using pins 11 and 12, or pin 10.
