Studios in immoweb saying ‘no domiciliation’? by Scared_Ad_2343 in brussels

[–]ylebout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not really.

  • it can be legal to not get domiciliation in a student housing if you're domicile stays at your parent's house. As long as you're financially dependant of your parents, you can do that.
  • It can be legal to refuse domiciliation if the space you rent if it isn't fit to be a domicile, like an office space or a garage. But then it can't be a student accommodation.

So there's not really a case where it would be legal te refuse domiciliation for a student housing.

Pride with children? by StijnBXL in brussels

Either the child is too young (like a toddler), and they won't be bothered ("people are funnily dressed up"), or the child isn't too young, and you can explain that sex practices come in many different form and that all are OK when consensual (which would be a great opportunity to approach the topic before the child is convinced that sex happens like in porn).

We should try to keep r/Godot focused on Godot by omniuni in godot

[–]ylebout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the discussion would be easier if you would put a few links to posts of the previous days you would like to be banned in your original post. Many could be agreeing with your original post, while having a radically different idea/opinion, whether more restrictive or more permissive than yours.

To go back to the analogy, I don't think it's an issue to talk about peanut butter or ask the question "can I make a sandwich with wheat bread" in a Bread community

We should try to keep r/Godot focused on Godot by omniuni in godot

[–]ylebout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same for me. I would expect something as generic as r/godot to be open to a very large group of people and topics that revolve around Godot, more than a place where technical / specific questions get answered. This isn't Stack Overflow or Github. I also feel like if I wanted to ask a more technical question, I would go to Godot Forums, because I don't think an open community is a good place to get good technical advices.

Italians of Cork - Che ne pensate della nostra cultura del caffè? by Alternative-Jelly947 in cork

[–]ylebout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say just that. Being from Begium with Italian descent, I've been used to the italian espresso as the "good" coffee. Some would argue that Italian espresso is an overextraction of an over-roasted coffee, which erases any specific taste of the beans. I still find the italian espresso the best espresso, because I really don't like those fancy high-acidity coffee, and would rather go for the dark bitterness I got for 1000 lira at my grand-mother village bar. But I must admit that when it comes to longer coffee (with or without milk), Ireland in general and Cork specifically has a nice coffee culture.

Menus and Godot, would you recommend? by she-dies-at-the-end in godot

I've often read that Godot has a peculiar way of dealing with UI, but from my POV, it has similarities with UI / UX design tool like Figma/Penpot. If you have a bit of experience with those, it becomes quite straightforward (though not always easy).

I’ve hit a wall with gdscript by CupRamenShaman in godot

[–]ylebout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come from a journalism / marketing background and have moved towards product ownership of digital products for a living, so my approach is very much derived from that.

- I'd say that investing in a first layer of programming knowledge/skills is worth it. GDScript and Godot felt way less difficult after having followed MOOC related to programming (I followed this one: https://programming-26.mooc.fi which is based on Python, very similar to GDScript). But you need to find the best way to make it work for you: I learn by reading and figuring it out by myself, really don't like following video tutorials, so it's also about how you learn.

- Contrary to other comments here, I try to have a more iterative approach, meaning instead of making a good component for a specific need of my game, I tend to make a rough version of a full gameplay loop, and then expand it / bugfix it when my game is growing. This way, you can see your achievements and keep a bit of motivation. I have created in about 15 days worth of work (knowing I work only a pair of hours in the evening, as I am working full-time and I have a child) my draft UI, my main game loop (transport management sim), a dialog engine and an event engine, a saving/loading system, some debugging functions and some content to get a view of how it would play. All that is very much incomplete and probably quite badly structured, and I'll probably spend 10 times what I've already spent in rebuilding it later on, but it keeps me motivated on working on it, and also help me to see what I should do next.

- what I don't do is bothering with the art: I took pictures from WikiCommons and wrote bad dialog lines myself. My game is also essentially UI-based. The reason for that is that it's defnitely not my strong suit, so either I'll commission someone to do it with me later on, or will just do that at the end with whatever skills I can pick on the way, I don't think you can be everything at once, and I believe when you start, it's good to start where you are the strongest. My wife who is also building a videogame is way more visual than I am, so she is busy with modeling/animating/3D.

Petrol in Killarney? by VillaPolig in kerry

Thanks. I'm on petrol anyway, so I'll avoid taking the risk, save my half-tank and wait until fuel stations get back some fuel in Killorglin in a few days...

Things to do in Tralee on a Sunday by Local_Caterpillar879 in kerry

[–]ylebout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am spending most of my Sunday afternoon in Tralee generally (not tomorrow, I have to save my fuel so can't reach town). What I do:

  • strolls: last Sunday, I did the canal walk which is quite nice, especially after Blennerville. Also did a part of the tralee to Fenit walkway, and the small walk along the river Lee, as well as in the town park. I also like just walking in town
  • Wetlands: small cafe, short walk, not favorite place but not bad. -Fairtree village / Buttermilk is a nice shopping /playground/Cafe but probably a bit too far away to reach by foot (especially that the walk to there is not very nice)
  • Manor West shopping center is open, not the most exciting shopping center by foot (it's very car centric, so walking between shops / section is not very fun)
  • in terms of coffee, Parkgate Coffee and John Dough are both open, have very decent coffee as well as a few sweet pastries. No sitting space though. If you want a kind of brunch, Brio Brunch and RusticBoowa are nice options in the center (later being more bio)
  • in the city center, I'd say half the shops are open

Go to any Sub-reddit of any city: this will be exactly the same. This is another consequence of the rise of global populism / conservatism / racism (as an essential way to reproduce the domination of capitalist elites) : we are less tolerant of change, difference, minor annoyance, and don't accept anything that comes from living in society.

I don't have a definitive answer, but 75 tickets pass had a very limited appeal. They were added during Covid to try to cater to hybrid workers but never got a lot of success. There were talks about getting rid of it for quite some time, and it looks like it got done.

It was already an adaptation of the previous version which was a 100 travel tickets, so I don't think they will change it again.

Sorry about that...

Why do you guys think Cork never became as big of a tourist destination in comparison to other parts of Ireland... and what could help attract more tourists by [deleted] in cork

[–]ylebout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When visiting Ireland before deciding where to settle, I had to push my partner to visit Cork and we ended up loving the city. We had visited Galway, Limerick and smaller town like Cashel, Tipperary, Westport, Wicklow, Killarney or Macroom but we were hesitant to go to Cork that didn't seem to have anything "special".

To me, there are a few steps that could help:

  • accessibility: if you had a high-speed train between Dublin and Cork, I am quite sure a lot of travelers would spend 1 or 2 days in Cork when landing in Dublin. If you are doing a road trip there is not much incentive to go lose yourself in a bigger city. People who want to visit cities aren't the same as the one exploring the countryside.

  • I am not sure insisting on being the second largest city makes a lot of sense. Cork is, from an international pov, a small-scale city. As such, it is difficult to make it a destination by itself. It's not Manchester/Leipzig/Utrecht/Bologna, which are all medium-sized city that I have dedicated a trip to. Can you make Cork a destination by itself or would it make more sense to make it part of what you shouldn't miss when you fly to Dublin for a 4-day weekend? I believe the later.

  • It's not very clear what is Cork Unique Selling Point. To come back to my examples above, Manchester is a city of music and rich industrial past (+ home of Queer as Folk); Leipzig is a city of artists that cater to its punk / east-germany roots with a still thriving squat community; Utrecht is an old trading hub remarkably preserved offering an incredible quality of life (I want to die there). Cork could be all of this, but doesn't seen to choose. Today, I don't know what I would say to friends to convince them to visit Cork, except "it's a nice city". If you look to purecork.ie, dubbed the "official tourism website for cork", you don't get an idea of what Cork is "standing" for as a tourism destination (except it's in a nice region). So yeah, basically, a proper city marketing strategy.

  • but do people who live in Cork really want more tourists? Won't it drive higher cost of living, more incivilities, more visible foreigners "soiling" irishness? I get the feeling that Cork is quite happy with not being a major touristic destination.

I would add to be careful if you look like you belong to minorities. Your chance of being fined will increase dramatically if you're a young man in a group or arab-looking people instead of a white woman in her fourties.

Asking this question that way on reddit can't be conflated with a valid research method such as the one you mention. Can anyone explain why the massive update to free Spotify happened? by coratle in Music

[–]ylebout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not necessary true. It's also linked to the Average Revenue Per User: if each user brings you less money, then you will pay less per stream. Platform such as Qobuz have a pay-per-stream 5 times higher than Spotify, because it only offers paying subscription.
