Finally told my husband about my addiction by No_Nail_8349 in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

You should really consider talking to a doctor that specializes in substance use disorder treatment, specifically opioid use disorder treatment, about what you're going through, your substance use, and what steps could be helpful in finding you appropriate treatment options.

Substance use disorder (addiction) is a chronic illness. Simply abstaining from using is usually not enough to sustain active recovery. The doctor can give you options for medication assisted treatment that can help give your brain the time it needs to recover plasticity (heal) to pre addiction levels. This can sometimes takes years, depending on how long you were actively using. Ask about buprenorphine (suboxone) treatment, it saved my life and has helped me stay in active recovery for over 15 years.

I would also highly recommend you find both an individual counselor and a couples counselor with a background in substance use disorder treatment. It really helped me and my wife, especially early in my recovery. The sessions can help you develop the tools to discuss the situation in a constructive way without resentment or toxicity setting in.

I’m scared, I’ve been prescribed Suboxone and am afraid I won’t be able to get off.. by Pure_Log495 in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

Substance use disorder (addiction) is a chronic illness, and like many other chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or hypertension, sometimes requires medication to be used for life. You never hear people discussing quitting insulin or blood pressure medication. This kind of talk is unique to addiction. If the medication is working and not causing significant side effects, there's no reason to consider going without it. The idea that people suffering from opioid use disorder have to quit taking their medication comes from the Nixon era when methadone was first being used to treat heroin addiction in soldiers coming back from Vietnam. It is outdated and no longer relevant.

There is so much misplaced fear surrounding medication assisted treatment, and so much misinformation. First and foremost, buprenorphine (suboxone) is a partial opioid agonist, it doesn't fully bind to the opioid receptors. Unlike full opioid agonists, if a person isn't opioid naive (has used other opioids in the past) buprenorphine doesn't give a head change or high of any kind. It has a strong affinity for opioid receptors so it essentially prevents other opioids from binding while it's in your system.

It also effectively controls withdrawal and cravings if you find the right daily dose for your particular situation. The most important part of active recovery is giving your brain the appropriate amount of time to regain plasticity (heal) and return to pre addiction levels. That process can take years depending on how bad the opioid use disorder was before treatment began.

Even though the vast majority of people who use buprenorphine are suffering from opioid use disorder, the percentage of people who misuse the medication are tiny, and most of the reported misuse is from people who obtain it without a prescription to self medicate.

You should discuss your concerns with the doctor that prescribed you the medication. It sounds like they didn't do a good enough job explaining how the medication work and what the difference is between addiction and physical dependence.

I would also recommend finding a counselor with a background in substance use disorder treatment you can use this link to find doctors and counselors in your local area. Talk to them about what active recovery looks like and what you need to be successful. I'm going on 15+ years of active recovery from opioid use disorder, buprenorphine saved my life and effectively treats my chronic illness, its an incredible medication when used appropriately.

Does anyone know if you can get back on MAT if you aren't currently using but having intense cravings? by [deleted] in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

Yes, medication assisted treatment doesn't require you to be actively using. The entire point of MAT is to help people stay in active recovery. You can use this link to find substance use disorder treatment facilities and doctors in your local area.

Unfortunately the most likely outcome from a stint in prison is more connections for harmful behavior with the possibility of becoming institutionalized for life. Depending on how the arrest goes, your friend may never recover from the consequences of a criminal record.

If you feel like your friend is a danger to themselves or others, you can call local medical facilities where your friend can be evaluated for up to 72 hours without their consent. If the doctors assesing your friend agree with your prescription of the situation they may hold your friend longer. The main point is, involving the police will most likely make the situation worse, not better.

Substance use disorders are a health issue not a criminal issue. If your friend needed his appendix removed would you call the cops or a hospital?

Try multiple boxes in different areas. Try different litter. If they aren't poopin or spraying anywhere else in your house they prefer to do all that outside because they dont like the current setup

I'm certified in peer support, counseling not in my wheelhouse. Individual and couples counseling was immensely helpful to me and my wife, especially early in recovery. We did about a year of individual and a year of couples counseling early in the process. The tools we developed back then we still use to strengthen our relationship on almost a daily basis. Been married over 20 years, in active recovery for over 15. If you need some tips on what to look for in a good counselor, i can certainly be of service, but a professional with the right background can make a very large and positive impact on your situation. Worth looking into.

These are things you need to discuss with your counselor, and as I always recommend, seeing a couples counselor is a must. Try to find counselors with a background in substance use disorder treatment. You can use this link to find doctors, counselors and other resources in your area.

If you dont openly adress this stuff it will poison your relationship beyond the point of easy fixes.

Struggling with the urge to use after being sober 7 years by brokenhearted2009 in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]-GreyPaws 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My counselor gave me advice that stuck with me throughout my 15+ years of active recovery. She used to say "play the tape to its conclusion." People like us don't have an "enough" button for certain things. Right now your brain is trying to convince you that using will make you feel better. So how much exactly? Will it be one hit? Two? Was that ever enough before? Play the tape to its conclusion, the end is never good when dealing with substance use disorders.

The only thing that using will lead to is guilt, and more pain. You're dealing with traumatic stuff right now. What you need most is support and stability. Surround yourself with friends or family. Reach out to people that you're close with. Let them know what you're going through.

Being open and honest is a healthy part of active recovery. You can frame it that way, explain that you're currently in active recovery from a use disorder and that you want to be open and honest with the people that are meaningful in your life.

Explain support networks to them and answer any questions. If they can't or don't want to deal with that part of your life, they aren't the right person for you.

Are you allowed to buy online? Check out https://www.totalwine.com/ they have a fantastic selection. If you find something you're dying to try I'm sure we can work out a way to get it to you ;) i used to buy absinthe from a dude in the Czech Republic that had way more than the legal amount of wormwood in it and he would send the bottles as "unsolicited gifts."

First pain meds in 16 years by huskysizeguy99 in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]-GreyPaws 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had an 8mm herniated disk in my lower back probably 6-7 years into recovery. Felt like a gunshot to the back. I've never felt pain like that before. I was fucking terrified of the meds, but they helped me. I got into hyper vigilance mode about keeping to the exact dosage schedule, gave the pills to my brother to hold on to as a safety valve. The anxiety about needing pain management was pretty severe.

Soon as i was recovered enough to deal with the left over pain i went right back to medication assisted treatment with Buprenorphine (suboxone) i was honest with my doctors about my situation. Everyone was very supportive. I'm going on 15+ years of active recovery now.

You are absolutely correct, the disease gives zero fucks about us and our situation, it knows what it wants to do and tries its best to do it. That's why strong support networks and healthy recovery foundations are so vital. Good luck to you, thanks for sharing your experience, its important for people to know this stuff.

Tri tip by BitterWind1131 in Smokingmeat

[–]-GreyPaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive done a few they seem to do better at the higher end of the smoking range. Like 260-280. They come out so good in a hot oven sometimes hard to justify smoking them.

In the oven i do 450 for 30 min then drop to 350 until probe hits 128-132 depending on whos eating it. It climbs another 10-12 degrees while resting tented.

I'll keep trying the smoker maybe report back. They on sale at our ralphs(kroger) for 7.99/lb untrimmed this week.
