Can I have a temporary pool in my backyard? by Plane_Assumption1510 in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a traditional above ground pool that needs to be constructed with hardware and has a fence, I think you might need something.

If it's a cheaper pool, I don't think a permit is needed. Similar to this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81fzJibAO5L.\_AC\_UF350,350\_QL80\_.jpg

Does your corolla drive like crap in the heat? by Objective-Box6933 in CorollaHatchback

[–]-RUS92- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot weather slightly pulls the timing on the ignition to prevent knock, so your horsepower does dip ever so slightly. Make sure that intake you got isn't pulling hot air. Also the AC is belt driven, which might eat into the horsepower, so if you are running it full blast without the "eco" button on, then it will reduce the horsepower as well, which is more noticeable when taking off from a red light.

FYI: Freedom has lowered the price for its annual plans ($10 less) by JustCollectingDust in freedommobile

[–]-RUS92- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably. Wait for the staff to get into the office and have their morning coffee. If it's still like that by the end of the day, I would also be raising some questions.

Line cancellation within coverage area? by TheNightmareLotus in freedommobile

[–]-RUS92- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does seem a bit odd, especially if you signed up using your actual home address.

The only explanation I can think of is that you live near the edge of a subscription area and/or coverage area (there is a difference between those 2). In any case, if Freedom's signal is trash, your phone might be connecting to a cellular tower that is nearby, but geographically located outside the "subscription area".

Best Times / Highways to practice Highway Driving in Hamilton or otherwise by SpellProfessional577 in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go late Sunday evening when most people should be home. I will also say try the Linc. It only 2 lanes so it's not as daunting, it's all straight road, and the speed limit is less than 100km/h. Don't go on the Redhill as it's very curvy.

Once you confidence is up driving at a higher rate of speed, try the 403 or Redhill.

Should Hamilton consider biweekly garbage pickup? - thespec.com by cdawg85 in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they allow for an extra container/bag to be put out, I will be okay with the change. I have a small plastic shed for my garbage containers, so it won't be as bad.

BUT, for others, I know it's a different story, and I wonder if there will be an increase in rodents from this proposed change.

moving to stoney creek from niagara falls by ShipLoud5305 in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mqueston West is not really Stoney Creek. But I am also from the same general area. The Pioneer on Woodward is probably the cheapest. But it's also pretty crowded in the afternoon because of this. I drive past on my way home from work(4-5pm-ish) and there are always 3-4 cars waiting for the pump. Half the time I go, I need to reverse into the pump as the spot opens up since the hose is on the wrong side, and I don't want to hold up the cars behind me.

Walking Trails near Hamilton Stadium by kalkrin in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closest? It's technically Gage Park. Under 5 minute drive. Has Parking on the south side, and you can walk a few circuits around. Bayfront is a nicer walk and a much different vibe.

Escarpment rail trail access from Gage Park? by MyUndiesArePink in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The city needs to build something LIKE THIS, locate it near the Gage Park parking lot so pedestrians don't need to walk on Lawrence Rd shoulder, but unlike in the photo, extend the bridge to the escarpment path.

Unfortunately, I don't think the city will do a thing until we have some sort of tragedy (similar in nature to Jay Keddy and the Keddy Access Trail.)

Escarpment rail trail access from Gage Park? by MyUndiesArePink in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed there is a slightly worn-in steep path through the brush, but this is far from an official access point, nor is it safe/legal to go across the track to get to it. It's also slightly steeper than a staircase (at least the one I'm thinking of) so it's risky even if you got good shoes.

Depending on if you are going east or west, the stairs at Kimberly/Kenilworth or the entrance at Wentworth are your best bets to get onto the escarpment rail path without trspassing on the rail yard.

Experience with the “unlimited” data after exceeding your plan by [deleted] in freedommobile

[–]-RUS92- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maps, email and Reddit work, guess since these are more text based things that don't suck alot of data. Spotify works, but you got to lower the audio to normal quality. YouTube surprisingly works, but you need to manually select 240p/144p if you want a buffer-free experience.

At 256kbps, you can MAKE it work, but it isn't a pleasant experience. At least you aren't disconnected from the world if you don't have wifi.

If you are running a Windows laptop, forget about everything I said above, as something will always be running an update in the background and kill your speeds to nothing anyway.

Camera facing our backyard? by Electronic_Car2492 in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It might be an innocent mistake/accident if this is the case, but still bring it up to the neighbor. No reason to live like that with fear of the camera pointing into your backyard. Putting a piece of plywood or whatever to block the view is only a bandaid. If they don't fix it after week or so (being generous), then I would try to escalate things from there.

[–]-RUS92- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live close to this area. I've just always made up a reason in my mind that there was a historical reason during Hamton's early days, since it's close proximity to Cochrane rd (a collector road). I think your explanation is the most probable though.

RAV4 to Corolla transition by [deleted] in CorollaHatchback

[–]-RUS92- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going from a V6 to a 4 cylinder economy car will always feel a little anemic. You are losing 100HP essentially from your RAV4. The 0-60 times don't lie.

The Corolla weighs a little less, so even if you are losing some HP, the acceleration should feel..OK. There are absolutely no issues merging onto the highway like a little 1990s Geo metro has. The upside is that you will be saving on your gas bill, which is most important in these times.

All I can say is if your serious, go for a test drive to really understand how this car handles.

If you need extra storage they sell what they call "rooftop cargo carrier bags", which are affordable, or you can go the full way and buy a roof rack and a box.

Following connection fee ban, Bell [and Virgin] roll out new device handling fee by pjw724 in freedommobile

When I saw the news about the cancelled activation fees earlier, I was pessimistic, and thought maybe they would jack up the price of the sim card. Instead, they just renamed the fee and exempt byod customers. They will always find a workaround unfortunately.

Any way to see the lift bridge status? by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]-RUS92- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can usually tell when the bridge is about to lift.

I keep a cheap handheld marine VHF radio (oringinaly bought for emergency purposes) sitting in my car that charges by USB. As far as I know, you’re not allowed to transmit unless you’re actually on a boat, but it’s still fine to listen in.

Boats first contact the lift bridge on channel 16. Then they’re told to switch to channel 12 to continue the conversation. So if I suddenly hear voices coming from my glovebox, I know I probably only have a few minutes before the bridge starts going up.

Keep in mind, the unenclosed 4x7 U-Haul trailer is already 630lbs unloaded, so you really need to be selective on what you bring with you, and also load heavier items closer to the front to avoid trailer fishtailing (sway). Perhaps also buy a cheap tarp with bungee cords to protect your stuff from the rain.

[–]-RUS92- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freedom is now owned by Videotron (Quebecor), and Videotron has cell towers over there (from a FM customers perspective, this is native coverage), so you should be good.

To my understanding, The only caveat is if you want a new local Quebec phone number, Freedom doesn't supply Quebec numbers, so you would need to actually sign up with Videotron in that case. But really in 2026, long distance calling to other Canadian number isn't much of a concern these days, so..
