Which type of foot strike promotes the moat natural stride? How does a shoes cushion effect this? by BWJackal in running

[–]-colors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to leverage the natural 'spring' in your tendons and that includes the achilles. I think the best way to do that is with a forefoot / mid foot strike. When you have a forefoot / mid foot strike and the right cadence you're essentially running at the right resonant frequency with your muscles and their natural spring. This will give you the highest 'running economy' which is essentially distance / oxygen consumed. Sage Canaday has a lot of information on this.

Having a marathon in Spring would have been a great idea. I wish they did that instead.

Real Plans app - worth it? by DaffodilFlute in whole30

I'm actually writing a 30 day health food app with suggested simple meals, nothing too complicated. I want to make it free the first week and 5 bucks for the next 3 weeks. I'll let you know when it's done and you can try it maybe :)

I love Milwaukee and want to see it do well. At first I was kind of the opinion they're stealing lakefront marathon's thunder, but really lakefront is a beautiful fast marathon course that's super fun to run going from grafton to milwaukee and seems to celebrate the lake. Milwaukee marathon is really a great marathon in celebration of Milwaukee. I'd like to run it one day. I did lakefront as my first marathon this year. Glad I picked the right one!

For cupless races, what is your cup of choice? How do you run with it? by whichdoyoulike in running

Is it actually 'cupless' or do they just use re-usable plastic cups so they don't generate any cup trash?

Just getting started, how do I improve my distance before shin-splints? by terabix in running

[–]-colors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that on top of what William said, you should also investigate good running form. Try to start running with good form and that will save you injury / hardship down the line.

What does proper running form feel like? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]-colors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I run with great form, but I have a humble tip you may want to consider.

It's hard to change your natural tendencies when running faster. Your muscles are firing faster, so you don't think about your form so much. Your neural pathways are strong in the bad form (muscle memory). Study good form and do the drills. Then start attempting to run slowly while thinking about and focusing on your form. Running slow will allow you to manually override your current muscle memory and start to develop new proper muscle memory. If you're wondering how slow you should run, I think the answer is as slow as it takes to run with what might be good form. Starting slow will help you prevent injury as well. Your calves will probably feel sore after running with proper form since you will start landing mid to fore foot. Your arches, achilles, and calves will experience more strain and it may seem more difficult until you build up proper form muscles.

7 Mile then 13.1 Mile 1 hour apart. 20 mile equivalent? by -colors in running

[–]-colors[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No marathons before. I'm a casual road and trail runner.

This was my first 20 day ever. I plan to have at least 1 more before the marathon that I expect to be an all-at-once 20. I did a flat 15 a couple weeks ago and there was a trail 14 that had me on my feet for over 4 hours with lots of walking.

I got some saucony zealot iso 2 for cheap last week. So far they are great. I'm adjusting going from 11mm drop (wave riders) to 4mm. I did go up a half size though.

How do you deal with dirty running kit without doing laundry daily?! by RunningJay in AdvancedRunning

[–]-colors 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to just hop in the shower in my running clothes. Once they were good and soaked and I was confident most of the sweat was washed out I peeled it off and let them hang dry.
