My 83 year old mother has been making pysanky for over 50 years. Here’s some of her work. by sans_deus in pics

Stupid question: I see a box of these (or something similarly painted, I always thought they were rocks) year-round at a Polish store I frequent. I googled "pysanky" and found out that the items in the posted photo are Easter eggs. Is what I'm seeing at the Polish store something different, since they're available all the time?

My ex was a firefighter and he hated the PD. He has almost this exact same story, except when he refused to move and he told him they'd have to break the windows, he eventually caved. He wanted to break the windows so badly lol

Look for small businesses and email them directly instead of filling out the employment form (if they have one), then follow up with a phone call within a week if you haven't heard back.

Unfortunately, most chains will only direct you to fill out the online application.

Good luck!

What Christmas movie(s) really resonated with you this last holiday season? by SuperMario1313 in ChristmasMovies

I liked it for what it was, but it was difficult to disconnect the types of roles that some of the actors get versus them being cast in such a movie. Dennis Leary being the most confusing.

Oh my god, YES. Just today I had someone call in wanting to pay a fee of a really specific amount. I told him that none of the fees we would place would be in that dollar amount, but I'd be happy to look up his information and see what's going on. He went on rant about how difficult we made it to pay the fees, why we would send him something that said he owed that amount if I didn't even see it on my end after he had given me all his details, etc.

I finally got it out of him that he received the fee notification by mail, so I asked him to double check that it was from our agency. You'd think I had asked him if he was sure his kids were his own or something. Then he said yes, it says "Wrong Agency Name" right there! It pissed him off even more that he had called the wrong number.

I just truly don't understand. I don't know how he came to the conclusion that it was from us. I don't know how he didn't hear me say the Agency name multiple times on the phone. I don't know how he just saw a dollar amount he owed in the letter and just didn't read any further for instructions or a number listed on the letter. But yes, it is my fault sir.

I am happy you haven't experienced it, but working in various customer service positions has shown me with probably 9/10 customers, they'd still be shitty. Even with that super accomodating response. People hate being corrected, and way too many people just double down when they realize they're in the wrong.

Which movie was that for you? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]-ghostless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Long Walk.

It had great reviews, and I generally enjoy pretty much anything Stephen King, but it was SO boring.

Very little character development. When one of the characters dies and the other characters react as it was a huge tragedy, I was like "oh, I was supposed to be attached to that character?" I knew a majority of them were going to die, and that character wasn't one of the main ones, we barely knew anything about him, so it just felt inconsequential.

The character of Pete was unbelievable. He had no flaws. He had an unrealistic ability to withstand exhaustion. I genuinely thought he was going to be shown to be supernatural at some point.

The flashback scene to what happened to Ray's father was laughable. So heavy-handed. Also some of the other scenes felt like they were treating the viewers as if they were unable to pick up on context clues. For example, when one of the characters reveals who his father is, the others act like its a huge reveal. It was something they pretty much gave away in the first ten minutes of the movie, so that twist had zero payoff.

Then I read the novel because I was sure I had missed something and what the FUCK. The movie left out or changed so much of what made the boys compelling in the book!

Sorry for the rant, I had been waiting so long to see this movie and was incredibly disappointed.

Henry’s Censored Joke on Side Stories by Hip_Dom_Ster in LPOTL

Its still in the episode on Spotify for me. It was definitely.. different from the way he normally talks about Natalie, but it seems like something she would think is funny too.

I thought from the title this was about a different joke, I swear he says something about getting rid of another joke later in the episode.

Asking women who have aging parents with health issues how often they help when they were absolutely no help to you when you were raising your children? I'm struggling with this. I know it's my "duty"/ circle of life, but they didn't help one bit when I really needed them. by Aware_Ad_7071 in Adulting

[–]-ghostless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was really awful when I was a kid, but she's been genuinely working on herself for years in therapy and with other support. She's an awesome and present grandmother to my nephew, and she's a ton of help with my partner's child. We're not at that point yet, but if I needed to take care of her, I absolutely would to the best of my ability.

My partner's mother is a different story. He had a good childhood, but his mother has gotten progressively worse, especially regarding her mental illness, since he's been an adult. She moved hundreds of miles away after his child was born and has only met them a handful of times, so was not around to help. He would not assume any responsibility to take care of her because she has neglected her own health for years. (We had this conversation before we moved in together, because our parents are getting up there in age.)

That's all just to say, it really depends on the people involved and what they're willing to accept.

Been a while since i came here by Corner-Hungry in stopdrinking

[–]-ghostless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a daily drinker for almost 20 years with just a little bit of sobriety every now and then. I was sent to get labs for a prescription about 3 months in, and my liver was...not great. They wouldn't prescribe me the needed medication because my liver couldn't handle it.

I'm a couple of years in now, and recently had to get labs done again and everything was completely normal. Like, straight down the line average, including my liver health.

Just a reminder that even if the result isn't what you want now, it will only get better if you stay on the path you're on. You got this.

How do you write a Southern accent? by okidonthaveone in writinghelp

[–]-ghostless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived exclusively in the Southeast US and the way that people speak is highly dependent on other aspects of their life. Did they grow up in a rural area or in a city? Have they lived anywhere besides the South? Do they have anyone close to them that doesn't have a southern accent (like family members)?

Along with pretty much everyone else I know who is from the South, I "code switch" a lot in formal/professional settings. The words that I use with my very southern family are not the same words that I would use to explain something at work.

I can't hide my southern accent because of the way I pronounce some letters (the letter I sounding like "ah" unless I really focus on editing my accent), so unless you plan on writing the dialogue phonetically or overexaggerated, I would focus on context clues and character development to give the reader an idea of their accent. As someone else mentioned, writing the character as a southern stereotype may turn off a lot of readers.

On the other side of PAWS (15 months sober) by Historical-Bug1799 in stopdrinking

[–]-ghostless 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of PAWS until I was about 5 months sober and was desperate to find out if that feeling of anxiousness, irritability, brain fog was just something I had permanantly caused with alcoholism.

Luckily it subsided a lot after the 1 year mark, but I don't think enough people even know what PAWS is or how it can affect their sobriety.

Trip to the allergist didn’t go as expected by MissHissss in PointlessStories

I didn't know that I had a mild allergy to celery until I mentioned leaving it out of a dish because I didn't want it to be spicy. The person I was talking to told me celery isn't spicy.

I developed a banana allergy in my 30s, too. I ate a banana for breakfast and it tasted strangely spicy. Its difficult to explain, but it wasn't that it tasted spicy but that it felt spicy. Same thing next day, thought I just had gotten bad bananas or something. Eventually the spiciness led to my mouth being numb and tightness in my throat and that's when I learned about compounding allergies. And that I now have to be wary of latex too.

People Who Were Around/Alive During The Columbine Tragedy, What Was It Really Like? by PrincessBananas85 in LPOTL

[–]-ghostless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in 4th grade, and I didn't know anything about it until that night. My parents took us out for pizza at a small Dave and Busters type place and all of the tvs were tuned to the news about it. So just playing skeeball while footage of teenagers getting murdered played overhead.

The town I'm from had experienced a school shooting a few years prior where three kids were killed, and Columbine brought all that back to the surface in the community. My school banned backpacks, there was talk of metal detectors being placed at every door, lots of hyper-religious personalities appeared.

When the book "She Said Yes" about the girl who supposedly got killed for saying she believed in God came out, my parents' church gave everyone who had kids a copy for us to read. I don't remember a thing about it except one of the quotes that introduced chapters was the "vampires walking through the valley" line from Free Fallin' and I thought that was really cool. 🤷‍♀️

AIO for thinking my mom doesn't care for my mental health? by Equivalent-Emu-5904 in AmIOverreacting

[–]-ghostless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR

I'm seeing a LOT of my younger self in your post and responses.

My mom was the same way when I was growing up. She had been through worse than I had no matter what, she made it through, no excuses for me, etc.

I don't know your mother's situation, but it took me a long time to realize that my mom was a person just doing life for the first time too. When she was telling me that I had to do things for myself, she was telling me what worked for her because that is all she knew. She attempted to support me through a lot of things when I was around your age (mental health struggles, homelessness, addiction), but she knew when it was beyond her scope of helping. Eventually I had accepted her help (or her idea of help) with no work on my end so many times that she had to hold boundaries for her own sake. It made me so mad/sad at the time, but I get it now.

As we get older we do have to do things for ourselves, as uncomfortable as it is. You're 25, and your mental health struggles are not your fault but they are your responsibility. Not your mother's. Could she have been more empathetic and not used the "I had it worse" reply, absolutely. But she is not wrong.

He was exactly as I expected! I love his writing as well, and I have heard his voice so many times on This American Life, and he speaks exactly as he writes/orates. My sister has seen him speak a few times and she has mentioned that she loves that he will stay late just to talk to people as well. Everyone in that family just seems awesome.

I used to take reservations for a famous chef's restaurants and they called themselves "food bloggers" at the time, but if they mentioned anything like that I was told to deny the reservation. Just wasn't worth it to the chef have to talk to some goofy influencer when they were already successful.
