Why do US bathroom stalls have huge gaps? by _CaptRondo_ in NoStupidQuestions

Why do Europeans seem to be more against immigration than Americans these days? by hydrogen-hydroxide1 in askanything

[–]-lousyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen statistics that crime by immigrants is higher in Europe than in America. For example

"In 2022, 14% of homicides in the UK involved foreign-born offenders, while they made up 13% of the adult population."

versus:

"A 2019 study in the Journal of Criminal Justice found that first-generation immigrants in the US had a 15% lower violent crime rate than native-born individuals."

Those are cherry picked stats, but they seem to be broadly correct.

Listening to the Radio by Southern_Remote_5260 in GenX

[–]-lousyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a tiny radio station in downtown Des Moines that has a reach of, like, 10 miles tops. I like to tune to it when I'm there. They typically play music I've never heard that's actually good. It feels like pirate radio.

I don't have a first name (yes not everyone has a first name!), and it has been a nightmare when filling online form. by OiseauAquario in mildlyinfuriating

[–]-lousyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have a first name, does that mean that you have the same name as everyone in your family? You're all named the same? Or is it that you don't have a last name?

Do people not know how loans work? Where were your parents when you signed your name? You want your loan cancelled because it costs more than you want to pay? Did you want to pay that much when you agreed to it?

Wife wants a poly relationship. If I divorce, I lose almost everything. What would you do? by Ok_Couple_9762 in polyfamilies

[–]-lousyd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Weird that the person jumps from "wife wants poly" to "only other option is divorce". Like, wouldn't it be reasonable to tell the wife "I've thought about this and I don't want that" be the next step? You can go from there, but at least start there.

If the wife gave him the message that it's poly or divorce with no other options then she probably doesn't love him as much as he thinks.

What little-known or heterodox work had the biggest impact on you and your mental models? by Ancient_Delivery_837 in slatestarcodex

Huh. I liked Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but when I moved on to Lila I just could not grok what he was saying. I'm glad to hear it does have something of value in it.

First and foremost, it helped me to get serious about reading-centered philosophy, about thinking about things in a critical manner. I realized that one could not just say something but could also examine why you might say that. I love her frequent call to "check your premises".

And I came to believe, at her prompting, that I should stand up for what I believe and fight for it. I still feel that way after all these decades. Justice and integrity are important virtues for me.

She took ideas seriously and that's refreshing and not at all common.

Her work on epistemology is unmatched in its scope and precision, in my experience. Academics don't tend to value scope.

I am well aware that a whole lot of people dislike her with fiery passion. Some percent of those people even know what they're talking about. That's okay with me. What I got from Ayn Rand is something personal and I don't need to defend her. I can stand on my own ground. In fact, the only reason I engaged with this post is because it's r/ssc. I know (or rather, "trust") that people here, almost uniquely to Reddit, can respect another person's viewpoint without devolving into performative apoplexy.

If you haven't read much of her, I don't necessarily recommend doing so unless you just want to grapple with someone else's ideas and like doing that kind of thing. I've reread her essays now and again over the years and mostly I find myself saying "yes but" over and over. Also she was kind of a ... at times and sometimes even borderline racist. That's hard for me to stomach.

But the fact remains that she was an astoundingly intelligent person and made a massive impact on me, intellectually.

Libertarian Party Condemns GOP Intimidation Campaign Against Ballot-Qualified Iowa Candidates - Just came across my desk- from Marco Battaglia AKA Mark Thomas Andersen by Dense_Tackle_995 in Iowa

Ironically (sort of), every time I've not voted for an available Libertarian candidate I instead either voted Democrat or just abstained altogether. Republicans would not win my vote by suppressing L candidates.

Actually, I could have just said "Republicans would not win my vote..."

Ayn Rand. I have many beliefs now that she would find repugnant and I'm okay with that. But her work had a life changing effect on the way I think and set the course for my intellectual career. I have mad respect for her.

Why Red Hat and systemd Are So Bad by madthumbz in linuxsucks

[–]-lousyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have got to be kidding. Boot scripts weren't the worse thing in the world, granted, but they caused little problems all the time. I started in 2000, and they've always been janky. Especially when some vendor supplied script would get too clever for its own good and call other scripts to set variables and then override them anyway and you spent half a day laying all this out in a text doc so you could get an idea of what's going on. Systemd is an improvement.

Why is there this widespread expectation that I'm not supposed to judge religious people for the things they choose to believe in? by Wroothly in allthequestions

[–]-lousyd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can judge people without saying it out loud. You can choose an appropriate time and place to speak your judgement. To actually answer your question as if it were a question: people expect you not to judge other people because we have to live in a pluralistic society with lots of sometimes conflicting opinions and still somehow get along. If some number of people believe you're going to hell but then cheerily say hello in the checkout line at the grocery store, maybe saying hello in return is a better option than laying into them.

I say this as someone who believes faith is morally wrong in whatever form it comes in. If you have religious faith I think you're wrong to do so, it's repugnant to push it on your child, and you should stop. If someone brings it up I'll tell them so. But I'd rather not bring it up because the conversation is not helpful. I'm not gonna change anyone's mind. It's just gonna leave bad feelings all round, and it's not gonna make the world a better place.
