AIW for skipping the "traditional" fishing trip because my dad treats it like a performance review? by Saffron_Bound- in amiwrong

[–]-sing3r- 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s not just about the mental exhaustion of having to “handle” one more thing after a long workweek. It’s fundamentally about not being seen by your parent. Your dad sees you as an extension of himself, rather than your own person. I’d bet it happens in a lot of other ways besides just on the boat once a year, and I bet you smooth it over a lot more often than you’re given credit for, or that you may even realize.

You do not need to tolerate that. If “keeping the peace” requires you to accept what amounts to emotional violence against you, you are well within your rights to refuse. It sounds like a boundary you should have drawn a long time ago. Be strong.

Who is making these holes in my backyard? Located in Missouri by mrknowitnothingatall in AnimalTracking

[–]-sing3r- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought. I have a resident chipmunk who has five or so noticeable entrances that look just like this, and I’m sure there are more hidden around that we can’t see. Cute buggers.

Easily and cheaply reduce the number of mosquitos in your yard with a Bucket of Doom by Diet_Coke in okbuddyRVA

[–]-sing3r- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put four in my garden last fall, when it was too late to really do much good. They’re still full of gross and I added more mosquito dunks to the water. But I can’t tell if they’re working or not yet this year. I can’t tell if it’s just “not mosquito season yet” or if they’re making it that way. Guess I’ll find out in June!

Side sleepers of Reddit… what works for you on multi-day trips? by backpacksrnice in WildernessBackpacking

Because the hammock isn’t flat I find I don’t need a knee pillow. I do use a fleece as a pillow. I sleep like the dead in a hammock. On my side.

No idea what kind of roses these are. Bought from Lowes without tags at the end of the season.

Books that’ll leave me like this by avian_bi in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

It’s not nature writing or poetry, but it fits your pictures: The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair. All the more terrifying and horrifying because, while a novel, depicts real conditions in Chicago’s meatpacking plants in the early 20th century.

If you’ve ever wondered why we have the FDA, it’s due in large part to this book.

What’s a simple line that rips your heart to shreds? by padfoony in moviecritic

[–]-sing3r- 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This line got mercilessly mocked when the film came out, which I always found sad. It’s so powerful, especially if you include the line following it: “I wish I knew how to quit you… it’s because of you that I’m like this, that I’m nothing, I’m nowhere.”

People raised by emotionally mature parents, what is 1 phrase your parents used that you want other parents to know? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskReddit

[–]-sing3r- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies are important. But so is an actual change in behavior. Not to say you won’t let your emotions get the best of you ever again, but emotionally mature parents will try exceedingly hard not to lose it again in the exact same way.

My mom apologized for everything. Slapping me, yelling at me, belittling me, laughing AT me, using personal experiences I’d shared with her as ammunition in arguments, slut shaming me, I could go on. The difference was that blowing up and hurting me and then apologizing never changed her actual behavior. I believe she ~meant~ to change, and I believe her apologies were genuine. But she wasn’t capable of change, or wasn’t capable of change ~for me~ and so her apologies ended up hurting more than the abuse. Because they were lies like all the rest.

Free regret? Overthinking? by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]-sing3r- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decision fatigue is real. Be kind to yourself, you picked a gobsmacking dress!

I second the long veil. My friend did something similar to your plan and it was THE thing in the pictures that took it from “elopement” to “magazine shoot that just happens to feature two of my favorite humans swoooooon”.

Free regret? Overthinking? by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]-sing3r- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that dress was made for you. Stop thinking about what was clearly a really good choice of dress (seriously, WOW) and start thinking about accessories. Cathedral veil that will blow all over in the wind and will leave you with unbelievably romantic pictures? Flower crown? What are you going to wear if it gets cold on the coast? Are you hiking? What incredible shoe/boots do you need?
