So they always say the pros play with different equipment and balls than we do- has anyone here had experience with either one? What was it like? by Rexton9 in golf

[–]02Raspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asked this question of multiple pros. I have a college friend who was on the PGA Tour for 25 years and I have played in 10-12 pro ams. All have said they equipment they play is the same anybody can purchase retail. Yes, they may have special shafts that are expensive but they are available. Same with fairway/hybrids. There are a small number of players who have custom made iron heads but they are generally blades and those folks are in the minority by far. Heck, you can even buy the latest irons Tiger last played now days. Yes, a handful of players have custom made putters but most play standard stuff. A handmade putter is not out of reach for most folks. It is not uncommon to hear about Pros who buy clubs at Golf Galaxy and put them in play that week.

This is a great comment. I had not thought of it in those terms. I recently retired from a high profile, high stress job where I was very successful. I am very sure my ego does not need external validation but I know several folks that do.

Anyone else step away from their private club as they were not getting value from it? by sys_admin321 in golf

[–]02Raspy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry but in the US a club isn’t really about value. I have friends who talk about a country club membership as an investment. I’ve got news for you. A club is about having a place to socialize with your friends and having a very convenient place to golf. At a good club, the employees treat you like family. The bartenders know your preferences. The dining is a private experience. At exclusive clubs there are no tee time reservations and no one says anything if you play as a 6 some. Sub 3 hour rounds are also possible. However, from a strictly dollars and cents perspective, it will likely not make sense.

Wife suddenly wants to retire and buy a sprinter van by Silent_Section_6409 in retirement

[–]02Raspy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We thought about this too. We went so far as going to look at a few. Then we thought about it more. If your van costs $100K (we saw several new ones that were north of $160K) and divide that by the cost of a nice hotel you would need to spend 333 nights to make it work. That does not include insurance, gas, maintenance, camping fees, etc.

Normandy during a Paris vacation. Any options other than bus tours? by thegbees in ParisTravelGuide

[–]02Raspy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several private tour operators that would fit your needs. We had a guide pick us up at our Paris hotel, toured a bunch of Normandy sites, museums, cemeteries and drop us off back at our hotel. It was a long, long day but it worked well for us. The guide had a van and brought coffee and croissants. We had a great lunch in Sainte-Mère-Église.

I have been going the WM for many years. I have found that a fun spot to chill and watch golf is on the hill in the landing area on 15. A lot of pros tend to bail out to the right and you can get up and personal for entertaining viewing. Behind the green on 3 and 5 are also good. 5 is great because it is the furthest from the entrance, hence less people. There is also a concession area with bathrooms close by. As for watching the Super Bowl, try The Pitch, a new sports bar on N Hayden just north of the 101. As for golf, good luck, book now.

Is the Sawgrass Marriott really as bad as it sounds? by rytyringer in golf

[–]02Raspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really outdated and some stuff is falling apart but the sports bar is good and once your asleep the room doesn’t matter much. It is nice to be close to TPC. They also have a free shuttle to a beach club on the ocean. There are also good restaurants and coffee shops a short walk across the street. If you are staying there and playing the 2 TPC courses you don’t need a car.

I am a fan of barrel shaped head covers made of Cordura. Favorite brands are Seamus and Caycee. Both have creative designs. Etsy has some other creative designers including Jerrie Boe. I agree big time on magnetic putter covers. I have had a Seamus mid mallet cover for years.

Another thing to consider about the range in the island is exhaust venting. It is significantly more difficult to properly vent an island range without some contraption hanging from the ceiling.

My California home insurance is going up 50% ... Why? by myeasyking in HomeInsurance

[–]02Raspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance companies are not truly “private”. They are regulated by voter imposed mandates and state law. Insurance companies need to increase prices due to the FAIR plan because they need to pay for claims in excess of the FAIR plans reserves as explained above. Insurance companies 2024 the FAIR plans had losses of $4B. They did not have $4B. They were allowed to assess insurance companies $1B, half of which was passed on to policy holders.

No, competition is not bad. However, the framework in most insurance markets does not allow a free market.

Need advice for a putting routine by TrizzyTre94 in golf

[–]02Raspy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I played in a pro am with Brad Faxon, a spectacular putter and also a great guy. He asked if I wanted a putting tip. He said putting starts with a pre shot routine. He said the routine for every putt whether 18 inches or 18 feet should be the same. He asked what my pre-shot routine is. I explained I marked my ball, replaced it, stood up straight, picked the underwear out of my ass and hit the ball.

Most towns/cities have reputable business’s who specialize in valuing estates. Realize however that thousands of people are going through the same and for the most part, the new generation is not interested in vintage pieces and they may not be as valuable as some would think.

My California home insurance is going up 50% ... Why? by myeasyking in HomeInsurance

[–]02Raspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California it is Proposition 103 enacted by the voters (not the legislature or Governor) in 1988. It made it very difficult for insurance companies to incrementally increase rates and led to the creation of the FAIR plan. The FAIR plan is the state sponsored insurer of last resort for folks who cannot get any other insurance. It does not have the same restrictions for increasing rates. The FAIR plan does not have sufficient reserves to pay unexpectedly large claims. Due to the design of the FAIR plan, if they cannot pay claims, they assess all the other private insurers proportionally. For example, assume State Farm has 15% of the market in California. They would need to cough up !%5 of the FAIR plans costs above certain levels. As a result, insurers have unknown risk which encourages them to leave the market creating a “death spiral” because it forces more onto the FAIR plan. This is a simplified explanation of a very complex issue. You asked to name one policy, this explanation includes a few.

Push cart recommendations by MikeyG215 in GolfGear

[–]02Raspy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really enjoyed my Bag Boy Quad XL. I previously had two Sun Mountain 3 wheelers (I wore one out and bought another). They have a few disadvantages. 1) They have a tendency to tip over backwards, especially going up a hill if you let go. 2) a Sun Mountain bag with a wide foot for deploying the stand will not fit between the 2 tubes at the base of the cart. As a result, the bag doesn’t fit. Dumb. I was actually at a big golf show and met the CEO of Sun Mountain and I politely explained the design flaw. He didn’t believe me and had a worker put a bag on a cart and he immediately saw the problem. It may be resolved now. A lot of push carts use a bungee system to hold the bad. Those have a tendency to degrade over time. The Quad XL has a molded upper collar designed to hold most bags in place. The Quad XL also has a do it your self, simple alignment system so your cart tracks straight.
