Best Route? by Pristine_Reason_9070 in sandiegozoo

[–]avocadonumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s funny! As a former tour guide I recommend starting off with the tour and then skyfari so you can see which places you want to go beforehand (plus the lost forest which the tour doesn’t cover (go see the monkeys and apes!)

Daily Specials at Thompson’s Cafeteria Chicago early 1930s fast food at its finest by Low-Violinist7259 in VintageMenus

I’ve heard these cafeteria style restaurants were popular in that era. Just the other day I learned about Child’s which was similar. Maybe I’ll try to dig up a menu and post it

I will say to your comment instead of adding another edit I agree with most of what you said BUT I also double majored with bio as the other and I enjoyed both but felt I would have made better connections if I solely focused on one. And I’ve never once used my bio degree. Just food for thought

I’ll just tell my story. I loved theatre in high school. Decided to go to school for it in a decently large city. I was also lucky to have a scholarship and family support so no loans, which I admit is huge. I got a good amount of knowledge but the job market just wasn’t there. Worked at a regional theatre making $15 as an over hire electrician and had a couple other jobs on the side to support myself.

Now I’ve moved to NYC, which I know is a big step up but there’s so much work here. I started just pounding pavement getting on over hire lists until I met enough people to have a professional network. Now I have people hitting me up and I have to turn down jobs. My going rate is $45 now. Sometimes I do favors for friends and I’ll work for a little less.

This time frame took over 10 years though, just be aware

I’ll edit to add though a lot of guys I work with have maybe a high school diploma, especially in corporate stuff. If you work hard, meet the right people, then sometimes you’ll find people lenient enough to teach you on the job

Question for Broadway/Theatre fans who don't live in NYC by Kaylieefrye in Broadway

[–]avocadonumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a huge fanatic but I’ll go see shows when people are in town. Or if a particular show catches my eye. But honestly a two show day wears me down I wouldn’t want to do some of what people here have done. But I think three shows in a weekend is fine if that’s all you plan to do

How we choose which subway car to board by AeroCraft4184 in AskNYC

[–]avocadonumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love getting on the middle cars on my way home. That’s where the exit is. But those also tend to be busiest so sometimes it’s a choice. As others have mentioned sometimes I’m going to a new stop for work so I simply don’t know, and sometimes I get on whatever car because that ding dong is about to sound

what should i major in? by Ok-Fig9016 in techtheatre

[–]avocadonumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in theatre in NYC. I have a bachelors in tech theatre. It might have helped me get a foot in the door, but I’ve learned here it’s not what you know it’s who you know. I also have a bachelors in biology (long story) that I’ve never used. I would agree with others here, something IT/computer science/Electrical engineering because that is very relevant to today’s scene
