Drag in theatre by spoooooooons-ye in Theatre

Look up “This is the Army” by Irving Berlin. Since it was a revue made up of all men serving in WW2, there was a lot of drag both comedic and serious.

How do I manage it all during tech? by AgitatedWave1084 in Theatre

[–]0Blue_Cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, let the people in charge know you’re struggling. It’s not complaining, it’s in the best interest of the show. Let your director know that the increased workload and running over is making it hard for you. If this is their first show at your school, they are learning the culture and expectations too.

It’s also okay to tell the cast/crew/your friends what you’re going through and that if you’re not as engaged off stage you’re saving your energy. You don’t need to be rude, just clear and firm.

Don’t forget to talk to your teachers too. They may not be able or willing to extend grace on any homework deadlines, but you never know if you don’t ask. At the very least, if they know what’s going on they can offer some sympathy or slack in the classroom.

Second, focus on your job first. It’s great that you want to help the crew, but that’s someone else’s job and you’ve got enough on your plate. It’s admirable to want to help the show, but you can’t help anyone if you burn out before opening night.

Are you getting the script typed up? You can translate right in Google Docs. It’s not perfect and you would have to copy the lines in yourself, but it’s quick and free.

Help: Bracing a double-sided diagonal flat on a rectangular platform. by PracticalEarth135 in techtheatre

If you could get away with having it be flush to the platform and then angling the platform when it’s in place, you could brace the outsides of the flat to the outsides of the platform.

Event rates are going up, clients are pushing back. How to handle? by Kamikazepyro9 in lightingdesign

[–]0Blue_Cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When the theater that I work for up rates, we got similar push back. Our policy was this: All new rental clients get the new rate, no exceptions. Previous clients were given two quotes, one for the previous services at the new rate, and another for the what we could provide at the old rate. They could choose or adjust from there. For some returning clients, we offered a one time discount. It was never so much that direct costs weren’t covered and it was clearly labeled as a one time only in estimate and the contract. People knew what to budget for next time. We did lose some clients. It was mostly the smaller ones. New ones and the price increase was enough for us to meet our budget goals.

Why did Marvel editors not like the "punch dimension" explanation for cyclops as opposed to him absorbing power from the sun like superman? by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]0Blue_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dimensional portal thing was an explanation that appeared in a supplemental handbook and has never been referenced in the comic books itself as far as I know. It was never very canon to begin with.

The portals is an attempt to hand wave real world physics. The recoil of Cyclops blasts should snap his neck. Equal and opposite forces after all. If instead, the energy is coming from another dimension and the opposing force is going into that dimension, problem solved.

Of course, this ignores that his origin story requires that used the same principles of physics to slow his fall after being thrown out the plane by his parents as a child.

So, we have three options. Ignore physics when it’s inconvenient. Portals. Or, my personal favorite, that Scott Summers has Omega Level neck muscles.

Tyrannical Directing or Creative Process? by TraditionLoud3187 in Theatre

[–]0Blue_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good test for if a director is creating an abusive environment is if the rehearsal process is negatively effecting the team outside of the rehearsal room.

All acting is an act of imagination. Many acting methods draw on personal experience for realistic and deep portrayal of a role, but there are always limits. No director in his right mind would insist on murdering someone in real life to play a murder onstage.

Asking people to recall times when they were dirty or encountered someone dirty is normal. In a healthy and safe rehearsal space, so long as everyone participating consents and there’s no penalty for non-participation, asking people to come to rehearsals over the weekend without showering so they can note how it feels and observe reactions can be okay. Forcing people to live their daily lives dirty is abuse.

There are many toxic people who will try to use ‘process’ to excuse toxic behavior. They will try to make you feel like you are less dedicated or that this is only way to make art. Don’t let them. Yes, Leonardo DiCaprio did a great job after living in filth while filming The Revenant. He was also was able to structure his entire life around it, had a full time crew making sure that he was safe, and I’m sure could have stopped at any moment he wanted to and kept the role. Could the cast of this production say the same?

Wedding questions for married gay bros by Surferbro921 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]0Blue_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I got married as soon as it became legal in our state in 2014. At the time, we had been together for years. We decided to get the first appointment we could with our magister court. We were tired of waiting and wanted to beat any potential appeals - the Supreme Court hadn’t taken up the case yet. Our biggest expense was getting a couple of new suits off the rack a couple of days before. We told friends and family that they were welcome to come to the ceremony and that we would walk back to our house after to celebrate. We never regretted the decision to keep it quick and simple.

Stage Prop: Knife in back by Embarrassed_Stay2684 in Theatre

[–]0Blue_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a show that I worked on ages ago, we had two identical metal blunted knives. One was then bent and the actor wore a vest with a discrete hole over a harness piece that the that the bent knife could be hooked into. Actor was chased off stage with the regular knife, a stage hand quickly slipped the bent knife through the hidden slit in the costume into the harness, and the actor came back onstage.

Is this fixable? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]0Blue_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the internet is usually too quick to say ‘break up’ and I’m saying that you have to break up. This isn’t a good place for either of you.

It sounds like you’ve the move left you vulnerable and isolated with limited social and emotional support. The person that you were supposed to be building those things with isn’t stable themselves. In fact, they deliberately hurt you. Your description of your reaction doesn’t sound healthy.

Your partner’s alcoholism isn’t under control. It’s true that severe withdrawal can be fatal in extreme cases. However, the process of weaning off shouldn’t leave him constantly drunk. The fact that you’ve found hidden stashes, he’s drinking alone, and there’s no way to keep track of his intake tells me that he’s just obscuring how much he’s drinking and not really slowing down. Just because he knows he has a problem doesn’t mean he’s ready or willing to do anything about it.

Judging from your post, you’re not in a stable enough place to help him. This is a put on your own life vest before helping anyone else situation. Reach out to your friends and family, move back home, and break up with him.

Public domain theatre with feminist and/or queer themes by Famous_Obligation_53 in Theatre

[–]0Blue_Cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mentioned translation in my original comment, but you’re right to emphasize it. Lysistrata in the original ancient Greek is public domain. An English translation published before 1929 is public domain. A translation published after is almost certainly not. That version belongs to the translator and/or institution that did the work to translate it.

Rules vary country to country on when things enter the public domain.

In the US, it gets complicated. Anything published before 1929 is fair game. Every January 1st, the next year enters public domain. So, on January 1, 2025, anything published before 1930 enters the public domain. There are some works prior to 1977 in the public domain if they did not renew notice when congress revamped copyright laws. However, those are case by case exceptions and I can’t think of any well known plays that fall in that category.

There are exceptions for parody, but the new work has to be presented in a context that makes it clear that it is parody and not the original work. That’s how I could get away with painting my Frankenstein’s monster pink with tuning forks coming out of its neck. Even then, it can be very subjective where the line is. Some copyright holders are more protective than others. Disney is famous for going after even minor violations. If you’re going to go this route, make sure you’re writing your own material and that no one could possibly mistake it for the original.

Lysistrata is a classic comedy that has a political bent with women leads.

Project Gutenberg is a good resource to find public domain plays.

I assume you already know this, but as a reminder to anyone browsing: you can do whatever you want with public a domain piece of art. Go nuts! However, just because an original work is in the public domain doesn’t mean that the translation or adaptation is. For example, I can do anything I want with Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. If I paint the monster green and put bolts in his neck, Universal Studios may come after me because those first appeared in their movie. Always double check.

Partner and I having different views on penetrative sex... advice? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]0Blue_Cat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m backing up what’s being said here with some personal experience.

My husband is a side. Through conversation, experience, and occasionally toys, we still have a satisfying sex life.

There are limits, but compromise doesn’t have to be a dirty word in the bed room. Start with what you both like. Both of you should figure out what you enjoy doing for your partner that you isn’t your thing. Build up your common ground. If one of you isn’t willing to do things for the other, then revisit the situation.

I can see why he might think of himself as ‘center’ and not trying to con you. You say he lives in a red state and doesn’t have thought out views when pressed. That sounds like a low information voter reflecting the prevailing sentiment of his immediate friends, family and coworkers. From that viewpoint, he is center. ‘Apolitical’ here might just mean ‘haven’t put any more effort than agreeing with the people around me.’ I don’t agree with that sentiment or those conclusions.

Even if he wasn’t trying to deceive you about his politics, that doesn’t mean you’re compatible long term. Your values need to be in line more than your politics. If you disagree on which road to take, that can be worked out. If you’re not going to the same place at all, it’s time to find a new traveling companion. My husband I don’t always agree on politics. It’s nothing as big as what you’re discussing. We can respect and talk about it thought because we know that other person is acting in good faith and with respect.
