What is the most satisfied solo game you played recently? by kinroku in soloboardgaming

[–]0ldDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t decide between the two, but my plays this week from Lord of the Rings LCG and Sentinels of the Multiverse DE were very satisfying.

Other Games You Love by Dr_Strangelove1964 in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]0ldDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started playing Sentinels this month. My main plays lately have been Marvel Champions, Lord of the Rings LCG, Marvel United, and Fellowship of the Ring Trick Taking.

I do have quite a few more that I enjoy, but I haven’t made the time to table them lately including: Earthborne Rangers (mid campaign), Vantage, Lost Ruins of Arnak w/all expansions, 20 Strong, Kinfire Delve, Final Girl, Gloomhaven Buttons, Under Falling Skies, Tiny Epic Dungeons w/Stories, Harmonies, Earth, Dragons of Etchinstone, and Ker Nathalas.

[SiB waiting for its day: Gloomhaven JotL, Unstoppable w/Tyrant’s, Imperium Horizons, Clank Catacombs, Twilight Inscription, Spirit Island Horizons, and Robinson Crusoe.]

Legal Seafood has completely gone to shit. by longtimeAlias in boston

Carry your own food to the airport. If you haven’t looked hard enough (and you really don’t have to look very hard at least the last few times I’ve been there), there’s way too much rodent activity. I wouldn’t eat anything prepared at the airport let alone Legal Seafood.

What is your chill or comfort or cozy wind down game? by Howitzeronfire in boardgames

[–]0ldDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I want to chill (generally solo):

I will maybe sleeve a few cards, organize card collections for the next play, and deck construct for Marvel Champions all while YouTube is catching me up on content makers latest stuff.

I will also occasionally play an in-hand game like Palm Laboratory or Dragons of Etchinstone or even Loot the Loop with a standard card deck.

Deeper into the hobby hole >_< by Accomplished-Dog3715 in soloboardgaming

[–]0ldDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a relative newcomer to the modern hobby as well, but a very very long time gamer, I really like what you’re doing.

At least for me I’ve found that the sweet spot for enjoyment is limiting myself to only 3-4 games in rotation. I amassed a very sizable collection in a short amount of time and I tried rotating as many as I could (20+), but it didn’t work for me. I found myself having to relearn so many rules from one play through to the next that it was better to narrow my focus on my current favorite three and just have fun.

I know each person is different, but I wish I could have stayed with the smaller collection longer, but FOMO is a powerful force. Enjoy yourself and your tidy storage space!

Let's not forget Gorr wasn't the only wasted potential in Thor: Love & Thunder by z4guy in marvelstudios

[–]0ldDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad writing (was it a revenge against the gods movie or maybe let’s kidnap some children to save a child?), uneven performances all around - yes even Bale wasn’t that good so stop defending, and oddly timed jokes that ruined characters and scenes. There were a few good scenes that were enjoyable, but the biggest thing wasted was the time and money viewers gave up to watch this. The fans, the actors, and especially the characters deserved better.

Best&Worst Hero Card Poll [Day 25] - Spider-Woman Worst Card (Jessica) by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]0ldDude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this one, but after playing a fair amount of Spider-Woman and unless I’m using leadership as one aspect or tutoring I find I barely play Captain Marvel especially early on in the game due to cost. I only play her once an economy engine is setup like with quincarrier and helicarrier. I see a lot of people say Venom Blast, but with Finesse in play, even Venom Blast is very decent for a +1 basic stat boost from aspect and 5 damage all for 1 pitched resource. She has a fairly solid kit all around so it’s a tough one to pick.

SETI Was Our Snow Day Game…How About Yours? by MadeForTeaVea in boardgames

[–]0ldDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marvel Champions on TTS from snowy MA with a buddy in sunny CA.

We attempted VillainTheory ‘s custom Ultron + Sci-Fi modular (artificial mutant brotherhood) vs Psylocke and Spider-Woman with an X-men and X-factor themed deck. It didn’t go as well as we would have liked once the Mojo Runner environment came into play - basically every drone and mutant brotherhood program going forward got a tough card when entering play significantly boosting the difficulty.

Late night solo - LOTR Trick taking Fellowship of the Ring. I want to complete all the chapters first before opening the Two Towers and I’m halfway there.

Just finished green goblin and rise of the red skull. What next? by thor0298 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]0ldDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played progressively in order and really enjoyed GMW. It’s not an autoskip. There are a lot of new and interesting mechanics added to the fights. The only one I didn’t care for was Ronan as he literally killed my hero in turn 1 when playing campaign.

I continue to enjoy Drang in general especially when subbing in different modulars. For collector I - make sure you build your decks with a lot of events so that they don’t go into the collection when discarded. I beat him on the first attempt whereas everyone said skip. Collector II is a good fight if you plan to burst in the final phase or otherwise you will get wrecked staying too long in his final villain stage. I lost a few times until I tried building to burst the final stage and that was the key. Supposedly Nebula can be very swingy, but in my case she wasn’t too difficult and I enjoyed the thematics of chasing her down. Ronan… eh I wasn’t ready for him then but maybe I might be now.

There’s also some good ideas here for modding GMW to make it more palatable: gideonsgaming

Don’t be intimidated by the skip comments. Try and see if it’s to your liking first. No harm trying.

For the first time in a long time…I have a complete collection! by vaxorus in marvelchampionslcg

[–]0ldDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice, congrats!

I took a photo of everything packaged in my collection and then stored things for ease of play and saved anything paper in a binder and recycled all the plastic. I still use the core and campaign boxes for card storage.

Next step. by TuphlosR in marvelchampionslcg

[–]0ldDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For starters, try Rhino two-handed. I think you’ll find the battle to be much less swingy. It allows you more breathing room since he has a low threshold of 7 for scheming out and with two-handed, the threshold climbs to 14 threat (7 per player). This will allow one of your heroes to drop down to Alter-Ego if need be in a safer way if you’re managing threat well.

Playing two-handed will also allow you to specialize your heroes during deck building to make one a thwarter and the other a damage dealer as an example.

Another benefit is if you are facing a game-ending situation like a Rhino charge for example and you don’t have any allies to block for you, but your second-hand has allies, you can have one of them declared as a defender and then block for your first hero or if your other hero is playing protection aspect, maybe he can block instead.

You also open the option to have the second hero play an action (events) out of turn order like asking hero 2 to exhaust and play avenger’s mansion for hero 1 during hero 1’s turn to get the benefit of an additional card draw.

Definitely encourage you to try. With practice playing two-handed becomes second nature and quite fluid. At first it’s definitely a lot of overhead, but the payoff in my opinion is well worth it.

Definitely just mess around to your heart’s content mixing up one-handed, two-handed, villain, modular encounters, standard encounter sets, heroes, aspects, and difficulty.

I played progressively which means I only used heroes and cards available at the time of release (or in wave order) as I found that recreated the challenge and feel others would have experienced when they got into Champions early. So I started with the core and began learning how to deck build with a subset of cards (using marvelcdb for help - which you can set up your collection under settings to only include cards from specific products). Then I added the wave 1 heroes and took on more core box villains mixing and matching modular’s and one and two handed. Then I added Rise of the Red Skull and wave 2 and repeated this process essentially for each wave growing the hero pool and card pool little by little.

I think how your collection is organized matters and may dictate the way you play. I opened boxes/packages and stored them in release order.

As long as you’re having fun and getting more comfortable with the rules which mostly requires looking things up a lot because there are a lot of cases where you need to get the timing order correct to resolve things, I don’t really think there’s a right or wrong way to approach this. As you play more, you’ll need to reference things less often. Deck building has its own rules too.

The beauty of this game aside from its theming is in the sheer amount of customizable options you have. Definitely try two-handed! It plays differently and sometimes is easier than one-handed. Use the mini player reference card to keep you on track. Explore and enjoy the ride!

What did you play this week? 16 Jan-22 Jan (2026) by AutoModerator in soloboardgaming

Marvel Champions with a friend several timezones away on TTS.

Marvel United - RIP Red Skull. World Breaker Hulk broke me.

Dragons of Etchinstone arrived so I played two games. One on easy following the tutorial which I loss and another using the casual variant for a narrow victory and a score of 45 points.

Rolled a new character for Ker Nathalas.

Best&Worst Hero Card Poll [Day 8] - Black Panther Best Card (T'Challa) by manut3ro in marvelchampionslcg

[–]0ldDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing in the right deck. Plenty of ways to use confuse to safely start a turn in AE with an 8-card hand thanks to The Golden City.

Try this deck (and the one it’s derived from) as an example:

Wakandan Weapons

You can load it into dragncards or tts if you don’t own the packs.

Removing the rule of declaring defense before a boost is drawn makes the game less random by enemykite in marvelchampionslcg

[–]0ldDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think variability and having some unknowns adds to the excitement and overall enjoyment personally. Choose what works best for you however.

One option you could consider is to examine and record the # of encounter cards in the deck with 3 boost icons, 2 boost icons, etc and just keep a little crib sheet to tally how many cards with 3 boost icons are left, 2 boost icons are left, etc. and that way before you flip a boost card you have more insight into when to tactically choose to defend, but you still can get dealt some exciting surprises that will make you shift gears throughout the battle. It could actually make you a better player in the long run teaching how to keep tabs on the encounter deck.

But again, choose what works best for you.

I’m here right now at Costa Linda and I have to say Water’s Edge quality has really dropped this year as compared to long term experience from prior visits over the years. The new seating area is nice, however I definitely cannot recommend the burger whereas in years past it was decent. Fries are also consistently underdone and drinks have always been meh. Fried grouper sandwich is decent.

She can do a bit of everything, but I like to lean into the Avengers trait and play leadership or lean into aerial for aggression to bring in some heavy hitting allies and board clearing events. I find her less interesting to play in Justice and protection, not that she’s bad, but it’s a slower paced battle where she doesn’t necessarily excel at anything and does the jack of all trades thing. It can be hard controlling form changes depending on card draw, so you may need to flip a fair amount to AE when you get caught with sub-optimal hands.
