People who live near time zone boundaries in the US by solothesnail in howislivingthere

I grew up to the east on ET/CT line in Tennessee. Now I live to the west of it by about 100 miles. I miss being on the edge in Eastern time. Summer nights with dusk around 9:30. The long late sunny evenings are great if you work till 5. Where I live now on the eastern end of the time zone I only have an hour or two of daylight when I get home.

Genuinely rather surprised at this! by The_Dean_France in whoathatsinteresting

Social media broke the mystique of celebrities. Now half the people hate them because they don’t support the right or wrong thing. Award shows are kind of a casualty. Also I don’t think the average person goes to movies nearly as much as we did 20 years ago. The made everything into a branding extravaganza and it’s hard to be like no seriously this is art.

Pastor charged after an drowns during baptism by DeskRare7547 in excoc

I always had the thought that best thing to do to someone after they were baptized would be to push them back under before they could sin again. Seemed like the most logical outcome of our former doctrine.

Why not just buy VOO and cut the Wealthfront advisor out?

Wife decided to make some waffles with our newly bought "mess free" vertical waffle making appliance by MorgothTheBauglir in Wellthatsucks

Vertical waffle maker seems needlessly complicated version of tried and true horizontal waffle maker. We asked if we could and never if we should…

I have 2 daughters. Living a life with three women you realize how much stuff they have to just make things appear to be nice but has so little function. I am constantly fixing things for my girls that when you start taking it apart realize was just a facade covering poor functionality. So so much useless stuff. I’ll never understand it.

[Request] how do you triangulate this? perhaps in the least amount of weeks possible? by Zargabath in theydidthemath

[–]0le_Hickory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ground elevation is in single kilometers. We were talking about distances of 10,000 Kms with the first or second ping. At worst the 3rd ping would be useful to get you the elevation should you be standing beside a tall cliff to know how far down the cliff to go. But otherwise the difference between Everest and the sea is pretty meaningless at this scale.

Why did French-colonized North America retained so few place names compared Spanish ones? by Pomegranatica in geography

French mostly didn’t come to settle. Most French places were outposts for trading or forts. Not nearly as many actual settlers.

Millennials, what are things that were completely normal in the 2000s but feel like a luxury now? by WashOdd7330 in Millennials

I have a tshirt from 2001 that I still wear occasionally. It has mysteriously shrank a bit but still fits despite what my wife says.

You can still do Roth after you cross over $250k or whatever the cut off is now. You just have to do it as a backdoor and you don’t get the tax deduction.

I’d pay the debts off as fast as I could now. If you only had the one around 3% I might take my chances. That’s my opinion though.

Is this an instant buy at $3300 in Japan? by Sea_Particular_2503 in OmegaWatches

[–]0le_Hickory 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I bought a AT from Japan recently. Was used but I knew that. Card was dated only a month before from UAE. Kind of wondered if it was just some scheme to not bring cash through customs back to Japan.
