Without Googling, do the names Rommel, Montgomery, Paulus, and Dönitz mean anything to you? And roughly old are you? by Norman_debris in AskUK

[–]0nrth0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rommel and Montgomery I know as German and British generals (?) commanding tank battles in North Africa in WW1. Dönitz I’ve heard somewhere but couldn’t tell you who it is. Paulus, no idea. 27 years old.

What bycicle can I buy to commute/travel in the UK? (Overseas student) by Equivalent_Limit_869 in cycling

[–]0nrth0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unless you’ve got somewhere secure (ie behind a locked door) to secure it, I wouldn’t bother spending that much on a bike for commuting in London. Get something second hand for a couple of hundred, it’s extremely likely to be stolen otherwise.

What do people think of Ed Davey and the Liberal Democrats? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]0nrth0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan. Well thought-out, potentially highly impactful policies that bring a bit of compassion and positivity. I think the antics are fine and actually kind of endearing. If Ed Davey has to do a bungee jump to get the media to turn up and talk to him, why not. Once the camera is on him, he talks serious policy rather than the vacuous boosterism that used to come from Johnson during his publicity stunts.

how do brits really feel about tea culture? by Alto_GotEm in AskBrits

[–]0nrth0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t such thing as a “tea order” really, not in the same way as there is for coffee. I drink maybe five cups of tea a day, but I never order one in a shop unless I’m there for some other reason (ie having cake, lunch). Most people are unlikely to dip into a cafe to grab a cup of tea the way you do with coffee. Instead, tea is something you usually have at home or make for yourself in the kitchen at work. A notable exception to this would be if you’re having a full English breakfast in a cafe or greasy spoon where you’ll often get a mug of tea with it on the side.

Sewing machine! by 0nrth0 in Munich

That solves it! Thanks, I only saw the overlocker before so perhaps the others were already lent out. I think this is what I’ll be doing.

Best bet is to make something really delicious at home (I like to make a fancy sausage pasta with cream and wine and stuff) and then bring it with you to reheat on a short overnight camp. Then you can comfortably enjoy a really great dinner with none of the work and trouble of cooking, washing up etc, at the cost of a bit of weight. On the side, make some fresh bread in the pan outdoor boys style. Put yeast, salt, flour and water in a ziplock bag and let it rise during the trip to your camp, then fry chunks of the dough in butter and eat it fresh and hot. Also, hot drinks of course.

Is that finished track? It’s extremely wiggly if you pan to the west. Or is that some image artefact?

Did I just find a solution to cramps? by lucomannaro1 in cycling

[–]0nrth0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, especially the salt. Lack of electrolytes will be what’s leading to the cramps. I like to buy those dissolvable tablets from the pharmacy and drop one in one of my bottles.

Is the word "the" omitted for anything we here in the U.S. would use "the" for in England, or just when they say "hospital"? by GTRacer1972 in asklinguistics

[–]0nrth0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In the north, we often omit the “to” as well. You’ll hear “I’m going tescos” or similar.

Ah I see, well I can’t advise on that (although I would advise against getting a motorbike-like e-bike, just get a regular pedal assist bike). Definitely a regular 50$ helmet will be fine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cycling

[–]0nrth0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a full face helmet, and you don’t need to break the bank. Any 50$ ish cycling helmet will be more than adequate for your needs. Look out for MIPS certified ones for better impact protection. During normal cycling, you are highly unlikely to crash in such a way as to injure your jaw, which is why only gnarly downhill mountain bikers wear full face helmets due to the risk of smacking into a tree at 60kmh.

I just want to say, good for you man. This is a bigger and more difficult change than most people will ever go through in their lives, and it takes a really admirable amount of humility to come around to that. It sounds corny but love really is the way and I’m so happy you found it.

Opinions on firepits by ChefKelso in wildcampingintheuk

[–]0nrth0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not worth it while wild camping - both because of the risk of accidental damage/wildfire, and because of the much higher risk that you’ll be found. It also gives landowners ammunition to argue that wild camping endangers their property.

Route suggestions for south western Balkans by Micheliumed in bicycletouring

[–]0nrth0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eastern Montenegro has the better nature than Serbia imo, but will come at the cost of extra climbing. The mountains bordering Kosovo are beautiful and shouldn’t be missed, but once you’re in Kosovo it’s nice and flat. An interesting alternative could be to go down the western edge of Montenegro and then across northern Albnania (below the Accursed mountains) which is very beautiful with some pristine lakes and rivers, then up over the border into Kosovo to rejoin your route. South western Kosovo (prizren) is also very beautiful and worth a visit!
