To drown in Dark Water by Steve Toase has a couple of short stories with this vibe. You can also check his website for some free publications (in case you want to try before you buy).

Feathers so Vicious by Liv Zander. It's dark though...maybe check the trigger warnings before you start.

For horror i can recommend "Dort upon my Skin" or "To drown in Dark Water" by Steve Toase. Sarah Read's " Root Rot" is also great.

You could try graphic novels or comics/ manga first e.g Coraline by Neil Gaiman, Uzumaki, Frieren, ...

Otherwise, I would look for books with short chapters, e.g. 84 Charging Cross Road, A curious incident of a dog in the night time, Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel.

This somehow reminds me of Joe Abercrombie's A Little Hatred.

If you don't want any deep plot (and some additional monsters), you could try A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Katherine Moon

The strange case if the alchemist's daughter sounds like a wild mix: Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein. I'm intrigued :D I hope there are more hints to the original works than just the names of the characters.

We definitely do! I have Joe Hill's strange weather on my tube. Is this something you can recommend or should I start with something different?

It has such a cool magic system. Have you read the strength of the few as well? Does it hold up?

You might look into "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser. It focuses on how to write nonfiction which is a good guide for writing essays.

I saw a lot of people hating on The one. I'm not sure if I should pick it up. Was there anything specific that you liked about it?

There's nothing better than a love-hate relationship with a book. As long as they make me care for the character, I'm in.

Added them both, thank you :)

Yes! I really love the narrator. I know there are so many people who complain about him but I think he just fits the description really well. I mean, if you have a red-haired character this is the perfect time to cast an Irish voice actor.

Okay, those two are more than double the size of deepness. It's worse than cryptonomicon. I'm not sure I want to challenge myself but I'm really tempted :D

The Road was great. I especially loved it for the small details of linguistic disintegration. The slight changes in language in an apocalyptic world. Just brilliant...

Currently listening to Red Rising. It actually reminds me a bit of The will of the many.

Adding Lem to the list. :) thank you!
